Escaping Silver

So, I’m in silver at the moment. I’ve been up to high gold in the past, but right now, I’m having trouble climbing.

Quite a few people have told me to just be “that guy” and instalock a DPS to carry myself out, even if the team is going to hate me. I consider myself a flex player, so instalocking a DPS feels wrong.

What do you guys suggest in terms of tips to climb out of silver?

I’ve tried all those methods. DPSing, Tanking, Healing, Flexing. None of them work if the team doesn’t work together and not get picked off one by one. It’s hopeless.

Too many players are playing the way they want to, and not understanding the game. They play the game as if it’s CS:GO, CoD, or Quake, or Unreal Tournament, which doesn’t work in OW. They over-extend in their positioning, they chase down the wrong fights, they don’t have the skill to give up focus on one fight to focus on a more important fight behind them. Just bad awareness, and positioning in general, which is the most important things in a game like this, which isn’t trained in the in-game’s tutorial system.

The entire team is needed to work together and coordinate, and that just doesn’t happen in lower ranks. Too many people are just there to farm points for golden weapons.

OW is the kind of game where any small mistake can cost your team the fight, and ultimately cause a Defeat.

You can ignore my advice if you like, because i am in the Silver Tier myself and on top of that, i just reached it at the end of Season 11 on my Tank play (primarily Reinhardt and Orisa).

However, i had to +1 your post because you are trying to do “the right thing” and i have to commend and applaud that.

Anyway, there are a couple of threads made by players who had reached Grandmaster tier from Silver and maybe you can try looking through them?

The one thing i managed to garner after reading through their posts, is to be patient and methodical because it took them a year to reach Grandmaster.

My own advice is that if you do not wish to insta-lock, maybe you can find a person to duo with.

Well, Good Fortune to you, Daimyon and continue to be a positive force.

Instalock DPS. Sorry but its the only way to climb unless you are godlike with other heros. Characters like Reinhardt, Mercy etc are impossible to carry with. I have 24% winrate with supports, 13% with tanks, but 71% with dps. Only wait out i suppose

Tried that too. I mean, it probably shouldn’t surprise you that this doesn’t improve your teammates’ experience with the game, in a game where your team needs to work together to win.

Ha ha ha! Yeah, there is no cure of going total retard and utter foolishness, i am sure.

That said, from what i understand from the advice of others here in this sub-forum, one can carry themselves out of the Bronze to Gold Tiers on the strength of personal performance. I think that the two threads which i had linked would be able to provide a much clearer perspective.

Otherwise, the only other way is to make a “static” as we call it in Final Fantasy XIV, which is a permanent group.

Dps isn’t the only class that can carry. And dps can’t carry if the player playing them is not good at dps. It’s not like you automatically move up the ladder by insta-locking dps. Zarya, Winston, & roadhog can easily carry at low levels. Zenyatta can as well. I shot through gold in like a week by insta-locking zenyatta last season. Brigitte is probably the easiest to carry with, although I can’t in good conscience suggest that someone main Brigitte. There are already too many cancerous Brigitte players out there

Git gud with one hero and dominate every game.

Seriously, if you just want to climb out of silver, become a god tier DPS main and forget about anything besides your own personal performance.

Don’t worry about the team comp. If your teammates give you a hard time, mute them. It’s silver, their advice/suggestions are probably all terrible anyways. Any amount of focus/effort expended on anything besides your individual performance is a total waste.

If you have what it takes, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to climb out of silver in a few months.

I hear you, and it’s nice to see you trying to help. But, those threads don’t change the facts at hand. Those players that climbed from silver to GM are simply one of very few that are gifted in skill, and possibly used performance-enhancement drugs as well, to carry themselves out of a game that is specifically designed so that you can’t solo carry yourself.

So, really, that advice just isn’t helpful at all.

The game is not built/meant to be played that way though, so that’s a bad expectation to have for players to climb out of a rank they’re honestly STUCK in.

I like to think I have good awareness and understanding. I’m the one in VC calling out where people are, when key CDs are being used, keeping track of the ult economy on both teams, and trying to provide as much info to my team as possible while doing my job. Unfortunately, I’ve been playing a lot of tank lately, and I find that my team won’t call out when a reaper or a tracer gets behind us, so I don’t often find out until one of the ranged dps or support die. But you are right, it’s kinda like trying to herd cats. I’m just wondering how to overcome that.

Look, I was stuck in Platinum for 10 seasons. I thought the same way you did, but the truth is that expecting anything from your teammates at that low of a rank is just inviting failure.

Good team player just doesn’t matter at Silver. Climbing pre-Diamond is about becoming the master of your own destiny and out-performing your peers.

Thanks for the compliments. I do try to be positive, even when it’s the hardest thing to do. I mean if you’re not having fun, then it’s no longer a game, it’s a chore.

Yeah, I’ve tried this too. I would play support, because support are the only ones who should be calling out things. They are in the back line, and see everything. Too much callouts from everyone can cause a team to lose.

But I’ve been in many matches where even this is not enough. You can see my endorsement level of Shotcaller, and it doesn’t matter.

I’m saying you can’t overcome it. You’re stuck. OW is still in early-access mode, and has been for the past 2 years. They’ll slowly add more things to improve issues like this.

Thanks for the kind words, Kryps.

That is the reason why i asked LeaF, from first link i posted, certain questions such as age, occupation and equipment used.

The reason for asking these questions is as you said, the conditions and situation which they are in are different and people have to bear that in mind.

Turns out that LeaF is 14, is a student, has very decent PC peripherals and PC and spent over 430 hours with majority of the time sunk in during the weekends (5-7 hours) in Competitive mode and he is aiming to become a professional e-sports athlete.

So age, time, equipment and motivation are all factors to be considered. Especially age and the time one is willing to invest into the game.

Yup. I mean, we all know that players (in any professional sport) are simply better at the game the younger they are. The older they get, the worse they start to perform, and eventually need to retire.

This is why I think the game should be segregated by age, and have Ranks for each age bracket. So that I can qualify to be “Platinum” for my age group. Seems only fair.

I think I should also point out something that I have noticed as of late that might be contributing to my situation. There are A LOT more Ana players filling the support slot as of late. I don’t have anything against Ana or people that play her, but she does require a significantly higher level of skill and awareness than other healers. I try to explain this to them before the match starts, but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

Not saying that you are wrong, just want to point out the possibility that goons might file reports to get the Thread Starter banned.

I know what i mean. When i was doing my placements, there appeared to be a correlation between having an Ana player on my team and losses vs Mercy and Wins.

Yes, indeed.

It would be nice to have age brackets…i just wonder how many would there be in my age bracket (above 40).

That said, unless we know how old Daimyon is and how many hours s/he is able to commit to the game, it really can be difficult to provide specific advice, i suppose.
