Error? Failed to connect to server!

I got suspended from competitive after receiving a “failed to connect to server” message in the chat area.

My connection wasn’t the issue because I was still online and was able to get into a quick play game immediately. I didn’t even get a map preview screen or anything just went from the “match found ui” to an immediate suspension and error message.

I have to assume that this was an error on blizzards connection end and not my on. I hope changes come in the future to address situations like this.

Side note: this has never happened before and we only get like 4 disconnects before we are banned indefinitely so it’s definitely a pretty big issue… anyone else experience this?

dawg, you got diffed by the server!

Unfortunately, it’s been happening a ton lately, and as near as I can tell, Overwatch isn’t to blame - it’s Battlenet in general.

Very rarely, when Battlenet encounters a hard fault (which, by the way, hard faults can - and do - happen even when everything is working properly, since not all hard faults will cause a crash/connection error/etc.), it’ll reset your Battlenet connection. You may see this in-game as a “You have been disconnected from Blizzard services”, which is an indication you’ve been logged out of Battlenet. Most of the time, you can keep playing and after a moment or two, you’ll be logged right back in (which triggers the message “You have reconnected to Blizzard services”). However, some in-game functions (which will vary depending on the game) may not work while you are reconnecting, and attempting to do those functions can lead to an in-game crash/disconnection or, in your case, a failed to connect to server message.

There is very little we can do unfortunately, and as I said, this has affected everyone, and not just OW players - myself and other World of Warcraft players are sometimes getting randomly DC’d while simply AFKing or mindlessly wandering around a town/city/quest hub as a result of this. I’ve already sent feedback asking Blizzard to work on stabilizing their Battlenet app - rather than show me the umpteenth “New patch/expansion is out, PLAY NOW” ad for games that I swore off years ago and have no plans to return to anytime soon in their “What’s New” window - but as this error does not have any rhyme or reason on where, when, and who it affects - I can’t imagine this will be a fast fix.
