Overwatch 2 will die due to the ELO system.
And I’ll tell you why…
Ever since I bought it, Overwatch has been a game that struck me right away due to its very frenetic nature, and as a lover of FPS arena I liked this very much.
I’ve played it several times over the different seasons and loved it despite the flaws.
With Overwatch 2 things have changed for the better and for the worse, many aspects of the gameplay have been retouched, and others underestimated and ignored completely.
The biggest problem of this game are the players who play the competitive games alone, finding themselves in each match a random and different team both for the main heroes used by your teammates and also for their REAL skill level.
On Overwatch 1 it was clear, a win equals 25 rank points plus a defeat 30 rank points less, at the end of the last few seasons it was more or less with 15 rank points for a win and 25 points less for a loss.
And here everything is okay, except for the fact that this ELO system based almost only on W/L are suitable for a collective, a clan, a competitive TEAM which is almost always the same.
Instead, for players who play competitive games with random teams, it’s a whole other story.
ELO MUST take into account what happened in the match, because ELO is an index of the PLAYER’s ability and NOT the TEAM.
Recording a lot of match information for each player
(survival time, damage per minute, total damage, heals per minute, total heals, the respective averages among all players )
A totally different skill level can be given or calculated.
It is precisely for this reason that in games in their respective silver, gold and platinum ranks that I have played, I have always noticed a great difficulty in playing with people of my same level, and this is SERIOUS because I find myself playing with inexperienced players.
I don’t want to be presumptuous, it’s normal to have bad performances, it happened to me too sometimes, and many other times the opposing team was more organized than mine, and other times they lose even if the game is more than balanced.
This is meant to be a criticism of the ELO system itself more than Overwatch 2, because the same system is adopted by many other games.
I just hope that the DEVs would consider reviewing and modifying the ELO system as they see fit or perhaps developing a secondary one to complement players playing with random players.
I’m sorry but I don’t think I’ll go back to playing competitive overwatch if the ELO system doesn’t undergo major changes.
The game is already slowly dying in its infancy. And maybe it will be too late when you realize it.
A Player who loves this game.
