Elims vs Damage

I see a lot of people valuing damage as the most important stat

Wouldn’t elims be more important since actual kills were secured. Otherwise all your damage just gets healed up, not to mention enemy healers getting that ult charge from it. Whats everyones thoughts

You can do all the damage in the world, but if you’re not getting elems all you’re doing is helping the enemy team built ults to steam roll you with.

Don’t tell the DPS moiras with 12k damage every game

Yes.

It’s really wild watching players manage to convince themselves that the person with 30 elims and 4 deaths is to blame purely because they have 1-2k less damage than the person going 10-10.

Yeah and it feels pointless to even try to explain that concept during the game. Maybe people just like those big pp damage numbers

I think theres a reason elims is the first stat on the scoreboard

Just depends on if that damage/eliminations are meaningful.

Situationally one can be just as or more important than the other.

Elims dont matter as much if you’re doing enough damage to keep the enemy off the point. Damage doesnt matter as much matter if the target is bad or you still lose a fight.

Both are important though as they have a symbiotic relationship.

Fact that Elim is shared to who contributed on the kill it only matters if a flanker has more elim than others.

If a flanker hero(probably Genji) gets high amount of elim they are probably doing a good job cutting out enemy Support or widow.

Eventually highest elim normally has the most damage, if not than they’re just playing solo play while stacking high elim but hardly doing no damage while the whole team is doing a 4v5.

depends on the character tbh.

like for someone like widow she’s not gonna do a lot of damage in a match because her damage his burst and isn’t applied consistently.

Yep
Got called useless by the other dps because he had 3k more damage than me, he was soldier i was hanzo.
If anyone mentions scoreboard stats they are most likely just looking to shift the blame, ignore them or just turn of chat

Neither are really meaningful by themselves. Are you winning team fights? Doing damage is meaningless without elims, but getting kills is meaningless if it’s outside of a team fight and doesn’t help you push the objective.

OW is a team, objective based game, not a deathmatch.

Well it really depends. Raw damage can also be a good thing if it helps to build pressure on the enemy team.

But if half your damage comes from shooting a tank and not killing it yeah, you just fed the enemy supports.

But if they are consistently getting kills, it wouldn’t be 4v5 by definition. Right?

I picture one scenario of a player mindlessly firing into a pocketed tank all game. High damage no kills.

Maybe shoot that support standing right next to them? Thats another topic probably though

This is life as a widow main who kills targets doing 200 damage as no chance to get healed up, but then you get called out for being bad by a tank or what not for having half their damage but way more elims… If I where Widow and u see a high damage number without elims to back it up means I am doing badly and not if my damage is really low but my elims are highest in the team as that means I am getting many, many picks.

I can kill 3 people and do 600 damage and a tank can 1v1 the other tank and do 1000+ damage… The entire scoreboard is pointless as even just showing healing done means nothing if its all on a tank.

There is no “most important” stat. It all goes together with the behavior in game. I think high damage low elims is worth watching the player - maybe they just keep hitting tank who keeps healing them and none of the real threats are going down.

But no one understands this and will still claim - i do most damage/elims i am carrying you lol…

Yep. I had a game where 1 dps and support played deathmatch with a couple of on the other team while me (tank) 1 support and dps fought hard to hold the point against the orisa another dps and i think another support… injust remember thinking that we had a fun 3v3 game sunce 4 players were playing deathmatch somewhere i couldnt see lol

Edit: i love a good sniper on my team. Dont care about damage from them really care how scared other team is to peek

it really depends, for example would be; if the Team tank is a shield hero, 2 good supports who only heals, dps1 sticking close to the team, and dps2 maybe being Genji/Widow who is just all alone getting that high elim all by themselves; chances are the whole team was just taking a beating doing high damage done but unable to kill anything because they were short on burst dps while the enemy team maybe had better supports who can heal better.

Elim normally matters if the Elim is like 50% better than anyone in the team (10elim vs 15elim) that means they were picking out important enemy.

if the elim is like; 2elim vs 3elim, thats meaningless because team was just taking a beating because they were short on a dps for the finishing blow and the flanking Elimer was picking out meaningless enemy that weren’t doing much.

Both are important, and neither in isolation is the full picture.

Raw numbers rarely give context.

For example, all elims take is to be involved in a fight that resulted in a kill. All damage takes is to do any amount of damage across any amount of targets.

If, however, you have a first-pick Junkrat that has sub-2k damage 10 minutes into a fight or a tank that has 3 elims over the same amount…then you might be finding issues.

Well look at Widow for example. She could be clicking heads all day. If she got 10 perfect headshots with 10 eliminations, that’s only 2000-2500 damage

I guess it depends on what character you’re playing

I made a post about this, but i agree that while medals were toxic, and led to “youre talking to bronze damage” moments, the scoreboard currently is unreadable to people who arent well informed.

Ive been flamed constantly, and likely false reported (thanks Blizzard…), purely because i play Widowmaker and quote, “Have less damage and elims than the tank”

If the tank is a DVA, yeah no im not gon a have more of either. Its very easy to rack up a high elim and damage count on a target if you can chunk away at their whole team in one trigger pull.

A shot of 200 damage on 1 target vs A barrage of 60 on 5 targets is not the same thing. You can kill 1 vital support on Widow, and then have your team blast the other 4 with Ults and whatever else, and maybe you get a body shot, or a headshot on the tank or something. That team fight ends with a Widow on 2 elims and the rest of 4-5, “oh carrying this Widow by the looks of it” when thats not situation.
