Effective Genji Counters and what you can do on your hero

Heroes that counter genji:

Tank

Winston
Sigma
Zarya

DPS

Echo
Junkrat
Cree
Mei
Sombra
Symmetra
Torb

Supports

Baptiste
Brig
Lucio
Moira

Counterplay against genji on heroes:

Tank

Hog - Whole hog is one of the best anti blade tools
Dva - Looking to defense matrix a genji when he engages can prevent him from getting a dash reset
Orisa: halt is your best ability against genji, and can cancel his dash momentum
Reinhardt: shatter is great against genji and his blade
Ball: Genji is one of the worse heroes into you and your mines can prevent a genji from blading someone for 20 seconds

DPS

Ashe - diving into an ashe is usually terrible, like hanzo she has great spam so save both cooldowns if you expect genji dive or flank
Doomfist - Genji can try to run away but he is very easy to punch once he double jumps and you are the best hero to punish him if he is tunnel visioning on your support
Genji - You are a terrible blade target for the enemy genji so buy time for your team with deflect and dash
Hanzo - Genji’s will look to exclusively flank and suprise you, they will then look to shiruken, and immediately deflect when you lunge and pop an arrow, don’t panic, your dps is higher then genji’s so wait out the deflect after the first shot

your sonic arrow is also the best ability against flankers, so make sure to use it on spots genji may flank on

Pharah - your boop is great at running a genji dash reset and he really doesn’t do much besides pressure you

make sure you save concussive blast if he tries to blade you and with the new drop changes coming to pharah you can use it to react to his dash towards you

Reaper - Genji does nothing into you and you do nothing to him, your not a great blade target but make sure you wraith to buy time for your team

Soldier - Nano visor or plain visor is great against a genji that has engaged with his dash on a hero with nanoblade or plain blade respectively

you are a good blade target so if you see him dash up immediately run to cover or out of his range

your duel is fairly even but a good way to punish a genji is helix rocketing the side of the deflect

Tracer - The duel is slightly on your side, he really can’t catch up to you and his damage is worse then yours at your range

don’t underestimate him though, I have 1v1 so many genji’s going

“yea genji is a bad hero why is he 1v1ing me”

getting cocky and not blinking away from dash just for him to land a nice combo on me, yes it was good mechanics but its also easily avoidable on tracer

if he blades you and you die its your fault, blink and recall can waste a whole blade alone

Widow - Genji soft counters you at most he is the last person you switch to against widow, just play far back on your strong maps like havana and junkertown to be able to spot his flanks

Support

Ana - Sleep is your best ability against nanoblade, but it is very hard to do, a good tip is to wait at the apex, if you didn’t shoot, he will tend to double jump to dodge your sleep, save it until he commits to it and he will fall in a linear path

your matchup is 50/50 just make sure to not shoot sleep into his deflect

Mercy - You are very annoying to blade or do anything, and if you valk unless the genji is good he won’t kill you at all

its your job to peel for anyone being pressured by genji, please look out for your ashe’s and zen’s and pocket them when they do, genji, and mostly every flanker, sucks against healing, and unlike tracer he doesn’t have a disengage and doesn’t benefit from distracting heroes

Zen - Your his prime target, so if you see him, discord him, if he commits to a flank your wall hacks can easily prepare you for an engage

trans is the best counter to blade, so save trans for him

Junkrat counters Genji…?

Guess I’m just garbage then, because I always lose to Genji’s whenever I pick Junkrat.

riptire is the best ult in the game against nanoblade

he can’t deflect mines so you win off those if you have both

trap on the flanks

He can deflect mines if they’re being thrown, because they’re projectiles.

The Genji can also secondary + melee the trap into non-existence as that’s 100 damage near instantly.

How does Junkrat counter Genji again exactly…?

you can detonate them before they reach him

your making his job harder, thats the point of a counter

his ult is strong against genji, his mines force a genji to disengage since they take a big chunk of his health

his regular pipe are hard to hit but the double jump can help him fall in a predictable arc

junk can also conc a tunneling visioning genji to prevent him from getting a reset on a teammate

I don’t think Sigma is a counter to genji at all. The only thing Sigma has is his rock and that start up and blizz taking away his rock primary combo to kill something makes it not worth playing him into genji. If the genji is close enough to Sigma he is gonna have a really really hard time hitting those spheres.

genji can’t deflect it

succ

the reason why I put him there is because genji gets a lot of value from his ult, and sigma has great ways to deny genji ult charge by shielding off angles or high ground where genji wants to poke and using flux on a nanoblade

Genji can’t do anything to grasp or shield. And sigma is a pretty big counter to blade.

He doesn’t need to deflect it aince he can easily evade it. It has casttime and is a fairly slow projectile.

Succ is not going to make the genji go away. Its just buying you time.

Shields new CD makes this not really relevant especially against Genjis mobility as he can just jump above the shield for example.

Sigma needs almost perfect prediction and timing to get that Flux on an ulting Genji. If we are talking about nanoblade his Positioning also has to be perfect or he is going to get slept which means genji is good to go again. If you want to use an ult against nanoblade you normally use Grav. You then also have the added bonus of being able to bubble someone and actually work through Genjis Deflect with Zaryas Beam.

It’s up to you to land it

Get your team to shoot him

Not really I do this all the time

with dash, nothing else if its close range, and rocking a genji on your teammate will result in a kill

sigma can get healed, sigma can get help, buying time against a flanker that needs dash resets to escape is good

he was never able to jump over shields, and genjis shield break is terrible

no it doesn’t, genji isn’t going to blade sig first, he needs to dash to a target and you can flux when he pops it, wait for his dash and use it

so can genji, this isn’t just sigma

flux is still counterplay also, which makes him also good

If the counter needs way more skill and hard work than the thing he is supposed to counter then its not a counter.

How is Sig a Counter if he then needs his team to shoot Genji? What kind of argument is this?

Just as I thought.

countering genji is one of the reasons i started to one trick beard man.

Good, that’s how counters should work. Heroes shouldn’t be free kills for their counters.

Because counters deny value, y’all have to get it into your head that countering ≠ killing.

What does this even mean?

Are qe both talking about the guy with double jump and wall climb? He can’t jump above a stationary shield and get an angle too shoot you?

Which one is harder to hit the small quick moving target or the big slow moving one?

Yes counterplay not a full stop counter. For counterplay you have another “tier”.

its not even way more skill as long as sigma saves his ult for genji’s hes trading 2 ults for one consistently without much effort

shielding a genji on an off angle is literally shutting down a valuable position by pressing shield with left click

this isn’t rocket science sigma has an undeflectable stun that alone makes him very strong against genji

you don’t know what an off angle is, if he is on high ground there isn’t a wall for him to climb your on the high point on the map, for instance, eichenwalde castle has no walls to climb up on most parts of the map

which also has a shield? and can take cover without worrying about getting value from his ult

you can have counterplay and still be average into genji

hog is similar to sigma in that his ult is good against genji, but genji loves farming ult off roadhog, so I wouldn’t consider him a counter, hook is also deflectable, its just that hog has counterplay against genji

sigma is the opposite, his ult is good against genji

he can deny genji from building ult charge

and his stun is undeflectable

You don’t seem to understand what counter means. It means you get an easier time against your opponent not a free one but an easier. Not something Sigma is gonna have.

Yes but you don’t do that without much more work to put in than the genji has.

That you think it is like that just because you may have done it once. I headshot wifows all the time as Hanzo is Hanzo now suddenly a hardcou ter to widow?

Yes, which is what sigma is to genji. It is significantly harder to kill a sigma as genji than for a genji to kill sigma.

Rock him in double jump. It’s pretty easy to do.

A. Never said hardcounter
B. Hanzo is a soft counter to widow
C. Wait for genji to use his 2nd dash in blade and flux him

No Sigma has only 400 HP and no armor on a big hitbox while Genji is small and has mobility. Plus there is fairly huge delay between sigmas shots unlike genjis. The moment genji gets out of Sigmas 20 m range where he is most effective is the moment Sigma needs help to deal with genji or a lot of luck. In the long run genji will always win that matchup especially since he keeps one of the tanks out of the main fight. Huge value for genji.

Rock still has cast time and travel time. Genji shouldn’t be considered a complete idiot if we don’t consider Sigma also one.

Not even a soft one. He is rarely ever gonna make a second guess about diving someone just because of a sigma. Too slow roo cöunky not enough range to be an actual thread.

  1. Didn’t know C came after B but also no. Just No. Hanzo is never gonna be a widow counter. It will always be the other way around for as long as hanzo stays projectile while widow is hitscan.

If you wait for his second dash to start up flux you already have passed up your timing and even if you still manage to catch him he qill most likely already have gotten value. More value than you will get just fluxing him which on its own wont even kill him.

its funny how majority of the cast counters him but yet he can only be effective to 3 blatantly obvious heroes that favor him . Next thing you know, gonna hear some dude here say that “GeNjI hAs No CoUnTeRs. HeS uNsToPpAbLe.”
