Never forget that DPS Echo was the most pointless and unneeded addition to the roster and that it spits in the face of her lore. “Hey, I regret making omnics because of the Omnic Crisis, so I’m just gonna make a BETTER murder bot. But this one is BLUE instead of scary RED, so it’s ok, right?”
Throw that into the retcon book. Just like DVa never actually played Starcraft.

Was not pointless. DPS needed a new hero just as much as any other role. In fact, the dps role was the one waiting the longest at the time. Not to mention its good to have a single target oriented flyer.

One can regret building death machines and then build another omnic that can in fact counter and defend the earth against those murder omnics.
Anyone ever play mega man?
It was compketly pointless… The dps roster did not need a new addition at all… but Support and Tank deffinatly do.
looks at her pick rate over the last few months across multiple ranks and summaries I dunno, looks like another dud thrown unto the pile.
Guess what? Support is now officially the longest waiting. DPS waited 14 months. Support has already waited for 19 months and we still have no clue when the game is going to release. That’s gonna be at least 2 years without any new content so…
Oh yeah, support is also the only category to officially lose a hero.
I agree, echo was yet another dps thrown into the pool. If she were a support she would see more playtime and shake the support roster a bit.
People being attacked by killer robots.
“Echo, help us!”
“Sorry folks, my creator let me do literally everything except fight, so you’re on your own. Here’s a bandaid though.”
I saw a post somewhere, explaing how the soft and round art design of Echo depicts a healer.
And it does. I bet most of us thought of a support character, the first time we saw her in the cinematic.
Depends. She might’ve been the new Brig frankly… a flying support that doesn’t need anyone else to fly? She’s in charge of her own positioning? I can even imagine her sticky bombs being aoe healing bombs instead of or in addition to dealing damage.
I guess the biggest thing is the ult… they could’ve easily just had her ult copy an enemy ult rather than transform her entirely.
Yeah, and it can also depict a DPS character (And a tank for that matter) which really reflects her lore in that she can fill any role required of her.
One of my immediate thoughts upon seeing her in Reunion was that she would make for an awesome DPS hero. Just think of the sleek, white style of the robots in Portal. Gives off a real “state-of-the-art” technology/weaponry vibe.
well with her hitbox she coulda been a tank too! tank to save the world
Oddly enough, I just watched the cinematic again and there’s 0 indication that she’s support. The only abilities shown are her flying and her sticky bombs, which do A LOT of damage.
It’s sorta like assuming that Storm Shadow is the good ninja cause he wears white and Snake Eyes is the bad ninja cause he wears black (the typical stereotype of the previous century, especially in movies).
I mean the one with Ashe. That’s the first time we saw her. For me, she does look more like a support from her design alone.
I can’t find the post where someone explains how design choices depict certain things.
But yes, white is a color that symbolizes innocence for example. Just look at Mercy vs Reaper. These “stereotypes” still exist and work well. Unless you want to break them, which could also work well. But I don’t think it worked well witb Echo, tbh.
Ah yeah definitely. Forgot she showed up there lol. Guess when McCree said “They need you more than they need me” or something like that… he didn’t see that he’s still getting played WAY more than she is haha.
The nature of DPS is one of specific meta’s and situation’s. Always has been and quite frankly always will.
Which does not change the fact that at the time DPS was the longest waiting. Not even certain why you brought this up.
They are also the only category to get one extra hero in the rotation as compensation for that. Support may have lost a hero but they were also given two in a row during that time.
I wish I’d find that post that explains the character designs, because it’s really interesting.
Ofcourse design alone isn’t everything and people have different opinions and all.
But I, for example and many others (who have made their disappointment vocal), saw a support in her. However, bias probably also plays a big role in that.
And still… support is the smallest category by far and will remain so for OVER TWO YEARS. That’s the fact, that’s why I bring it up, cause you seem to think that this isn’t a big deal when this was the whole reason why people defend Echo being dps in the first place.
“DPS hasn’t gotten anything in a long time!”
“Support hasn’t gotten AND WONT GET anything in WAY longer time!” But yeah sure, only applies to some people. Would’ve been nice to have an 8th support sometime this year, maybe release one of their new incoming heroes a bit early but nope.
I’m assuming we’re not getting any new maps either until then?
This has more to do with thedev team holding ow1 content to artificially bolster the content released for OW2.
The new engine, the new mode, the new hero(s)… alll could be released as soon as they are ready. But nope. They’ll hold on to it to make OW2 feel bigger.
Yeah, for sure. I was also incredibly shocked that she wasn’t a support upon release (I do love her as a DPS but I didn’t expect them to release another one) and still maintain that they should’ve just put her in OW2 in favour of releasing another support/tank hero.
