I’m a Master Doom main, for context, and I’ve been trying new heroes out, in particular dive DPS, and I really wanted to like Genji, but man… It feels like this character is just lacking. Especially when compared to Echo.
I spent a few days playing both characters. And I had great success on Echo. I’ve been utterly destroying people. And even in losses, which was usually a Support issue, I felt like I was still doing good.
But Genji, oh man. This guy… Idk. Sometimes I would pop off and score a sexy kill feed. But usually I felt like I was just contributing nothing all game. Especially so in games that we lost.
From my experience, it feels like Genji is just lacking too much in the poke department. His damage outside of his burst and dive is laughable.
In contrast, Echo’s poke is not bad. She can do quite a bit of damage from a distance, and can even occassionally be lethal if she lands enough Stickys on someone.
Both characters have great close range executes, and Genji can snowball to more executes. But the issue is getting people to that point. Genji is really reliant on his teammates setting up kills for him to finish them off. Whereas Echo can play off of someone else as well, but can also very easily get someone to that point, herself.
Both have good Ults, and while Genji’s can pop off, without help his Ult can accomplish nothing. Once again proving his reliance on others. Once he starts getting the kills rolling, he’ll start smoking. But it’s getting that first and second kills. He’s so feast or famine.
Whereas Echo, her Ult is so versatile that, yeah, if you want to team wipe them yourself you will probably need some help, but with her you could also take a supportive Ult, etc. She’s super versatile and her Ult has many different uses and can make plays even without scoring multiple kills. Whereas Genji’s is a dud if he doesn’t land a kill or two quickly.
Then there’s the fact of how effective Echo is at assassinating fliers, by herself even. Whereas Genji, again, would only be able to finish someone off, and is entirely reliant on someone getting them down to a low enough health that he could go for his execute.
Genji’s only saving grace is his Deflect, with its ability to cancel and even redirect Ults. But that requires quite a lot of predictory and reactionary skills. And Echo can almost do just that, even, by her Ult. Turning her opponent’s strength against them. And the only prerequisite for doing that well is to know the characters enough to be able to play as them.
Idk… Thoughts? I want to know if it’s just me or if others feel Genji is lacking. I think if he just had better poke capabilities he could shine but I’m open minded on the conversation.
