I have a friend named Adolf, but I have never linked him to another more famous and controversial “Adolf”. I say this to emphasize how ridiculous I am finding who is plotting to censor the McCree name after the latest scandals. but in reality there would be no problems: go and listen to the interaction between Sombra and McCree (min 5:04)
it refers to McCree’s teaser in 2015 of an article written by Joel Morricone (homage to the composer of Spaghetti western music, my compatriot Ennio Morricone).
More details: https://overwatch.fandom.com/wiki/Joel_Morricone
last note: in the book Deadlock Rebels it is never specified if Jesse is McCree’s real name, and he tends to be very reserved about what he did when he was very young.
you just found a way not to have a strange retcon of the name: Joel McCree, but “Jesse” sounded better for him. (exactly how the name came about).
Now can we stop feeling indignant with the name “McCree”? I find it foolish to feel so sensitive about a simple developmental anecdote.
Like, it’s the McCree part of his name that’s really iconic. That’s what everyone refers to him as, that’s how his name becomes memed (McRightClick, McFanTheHammer etc).
When I hear the name ‘Jesse’, I think of Breaking Bad… lol
Besides, the thing is that the character wasn’t named that as an homage to the developer/employee.
Jeff and others have told this story multiple times. They just needed a name, they literally saw his name on a piece of paper, and were like “hey that’s a good name for a cowboy.”
It was completely random. Jesse McCree wasn’t even part of the Overwatch team.
Everyone’s different. Different motivations. Different reactions. I only speak for myself. I want the heroes name changed. Imo it’s a situation that shouldn’t have happened in the first place, as the designers shouldn’t create connections with real life people because real life people are capable of doing, well exactly what we’ve seen. A similar thing happened when they connect real life people to specific skins such as the Zarya skin. The hero was named after that person. It wasn’t just a coincidence or solely because the name sounded “cool”. He was obviously contacted before hand and gave the go ahead, so the hero was unfortunately named after/for this guy.
I like the hero, he’s one of my favourites. My favourite movie is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and I argued against them removing the noose spray because it was a clear reference to that movie, where one of the main plot devices is the noose, which Blondie shoots to free Tuco in a bounty scam they’ve got going.
Anyway, I digress.
This guy seems like a scumbag. The Cosby suite is a scummy thing to have. Taking advantage of WoW fan girls at Blizzcon so you can **** them is scummy. The hero has the name that he has because this scumbag person exists. So, I’m glad that other people are fine with that, but I don’t like it.
That’s my position. I see a lot of people who can’t relate to that and so they come out with stuff like:
So, I’m like… Okay, “foolish”? Mhm… Well that just smacks of people not relating to something so they dismiss it in a kind of insulting way, but I could go on the offensive too and start insulting you, if I cared to do so… but I don’t. There’s nothing to gain there, really.
I’m not even sure why I’m taking the time to type this. It’s a waste of my time, and a waste of your time for reading it. I apologise.
You do realize it wasn’t an homage to the employee? That it was literally random when they needed a name, looked over, saw his on a piece of paper. He wasn’t even on the Overwatch team. It was random. He wasn’t named for the guy, he just has the same name as the guy.
There are probably hundreds if not thousands of other Jesse McCrees in the world. Should they also all change their names?
There are multiple videos and instances of Jeff and other developers in behind the scenes videos and whatnot where they explain this. They’ve even talked about it at Blizzcon. It was completely random, and the quote “that’s a good name for a cowboy” is the entire reason the bot on Hollywood has the voiceline: “Jesse McCree? That’s a terrible name for a cowboy!”
They literally just couldn’t come up with a name, looked over, saw his on a piece of paper, and were like “hey that’s a cool name.”
I don’t even think the employee was very high level at the time because we’re talking years ago.
Yes, I’ve seen the video of the guy explaining that story. That’s fine, but the story didn’t end there. He then obviously went and had a chat with the guy. The hero is named for that guy. If that guy didn’t exist then the hero would be called something else. It’s not “random”. There is cause and effect.
No, he just has the same name. The only conversation that took part was “is it cool if we use this name?”
This was also explained.
Glancing over, seeing a name on a piece of paper, and being like “hey that’s cool” is literally the definition of ‘random’. It wasn’t inspired by the man, it was inspired by the name itself.
Whoever the man was or became after has nothing to do with the character, who has his own background, his own story, and his own morality.
this is exactly what is bothering me enough, the senseless indignation that is forming around this namesake.
I blame much of the blame on sites like Dexerto who have dedicated articles to this question, when honestly it is a problem that 1 does not exist and 2 is not even that difficult to modify without senseless retcon.
The dumbest comments I find from those who simply say “delete McCree, I hate him in the game” (and why do you use tracer or pharah to counter him, my dear?).
Dunno man, maybe we could, you know, not dive in into changing a character’s name until the guy that takes his name has been formally accused of something.
Yea, but those characters weren’t named for a specific person, so it’s got nothing to do with what we’re talking about, except from your reality it probably does because you’ve convinced yourself that this is all completely random. /facepalm
Again, I’m not willingly gullible enough to believe that they didn’t speak to him and getting the go ahead before naming a hero in their game the same name as a fellow employee. It’s wonderful that you are, but I don’t buy it. /facepalm
And neither was McCree. He was named because they liked the name, not because of the man who has the name.
Still doesn’t make him named after the guy. Just means they were polite about using his name to avoid him being like HAY HERE IS A LAWSUIT LOL. And of course you’d have to be an idiot to not say yes.
I mean… I saw a video on Facebook about a girl named Sahar the other day. I really like the name, so I’m going to use it for a character. That doesn’t mean I named that character after the girl in the video. It just means I liked her name.
