Ranked will be always circus unless something like this is added, i know blizz tried the sms and than people cried but i would try again.
Why is ranked circus?
Because in low ranks gm smurfs in plat or gold destroys the game when they can singlehandly carry a game alone.
In GM its infested with wintraders, leaver and throwers, who can play as GM but doesnt care about their account at all or are boosting friend by winrtrading.
Killing smurfs would create amazing competitive experience, after that it would be just about balancing heroes.

Each account made in ow2 does require a unique phone number. And you can’t just swap it from one account and use on another after. At least on pc.

Don’t you need a unique phone number for every account? I tried to make an account for a friend without a phone, but it didn’t work. Did they change this? Besides, I’m pretty sure there’s a company that can get you a number that works for overwatch for two dollars.

Huh? They took that back no?
Nope. Had a friend trying to make a new account, it asked for a number. It also didn’t allow him to use a pre paid number still either. He did however find some website that sold sms verification for like 3 dollars. So the cost to make an account if people look around isn’t very much. But I assume majority of users are actually using their own phone number. Or a family members.

IIRC They just made it so that already existing OW1 account are exempt for the requirements.

Interesting, it didnt help smurfs and wintraders issue at all
phone numbers is never a good idea because they can be spoofed or bought. the same way Scammers get ahold of numbers to call through and blast a phone with scams.
The only thing ever talked about is maybe having players join a consortium to game online. Mainly for Anticheat purposes and the few situations where someone does make an IRL threat. A consortium that becomes a reputable organization, that players have to present REAL ID in order to create an account. Which the ID should be used as a login to the server. So a person would have to sign up, in-person at a Walmart, bestbuy or gamestop.
- require Username: (not an email address).
- require Password: (Any type with pc characters and no requirements).
- require Submitting a Government Issued ID at the registry location.
I dont like this idea and I am pro-equality for all. But with what has happened so much in the world of online gaming anymore. The industry itself is going to have to shift to an actual “real ID”. at this point. Both for security purposes of someone and the consortium would have to hold gaming companies equally accountable.
Which means the company would have to comply with an ethics board.
- All bans have to be reviewed.
- All bans should limit ONLINE access only.
Phone number not required for console
They was never any sort of barrier to new console accounts. You could be in a quick play game in a few minutes.
It didn’t do much in ow1 either when people had to buy new accounts. The barrier to entry will never be high enough to stop people. Other than like you said, ID, which is something I think Korea does in some games. But I can’t imagine that happening in the western world.

Phone number requirement is no longer needed. It was removed months ago. I can create many new accounts and yes, you can put a phone number in there, but you don’t need to. This is why so many Alt or Smurf accounts over the last few months.
At least on Console it’s not required anymore.

I have 2 accounts and neither one require me to enter add a phone number when signing in.
That might change with the introduction of their “new authenticator” here at the start of the new year, however.
Phone numbers already needed for new accounts.
ID would be difficult legally.
That may be true, on pc as of a few days ago, my buddy needed a number. I dont know about console.

Were your accounts made in ow1?
Yes. They allowed ow1 accounts to not need numbers. I think they had to have been logged in within a year before ow2 launch. So like an inactive account from 2017 would have needed a number. But they changed that I think just after ow2 went live due to the complaints from ow1 players who played for years, but have prepaid numbers. So now they suddenly couldn’t play.
If you try and make a new account now, it will require a post paid number.

what is this china?, lol require gov Id, etc. nah bruh that won’t do in 1st world countries lol. christ you ppl are insane, just play the game, report supposed smurfs for what?, being better than you?, the matchmaker should have them at their working SR/MMR SOONER. now if they have ALTs to throw/grief etc. specifically then report them. Nothing wrong with having an ALT to play different roles on…

Unfortuantly we have reached a point in online gaming where it isn’t even playable because people cheat so bad now. That anything that is player vs player is flatout cheaters.
Phone numbers is dumb. but as for online games. Sadly we have reached that point.
I’ve used so many family members phone numbers lmao
