Mei loses all of her friends, Rein almost loses his eye and his mentor sacrifices himself, Bastion has flashbacks to the Omnic war and its mass destruction and loss of life, Genji is torn to shreds by his own brother. But D.va? She shot some bots, no one died and she only injured her arm and leg, both of which heal completely. There’s no loss and it only enforces the idea that D.va can do no wrong, even when she screws up and almost loses she comes out on top without anything going wrong besides losing the meka!
Edit: Forgot to mention that it doesn’t show us anything we didn’t already know, it doesn’t even explain why the Omnics attacked or what those new ones were. This could have easily been a short about literally any of the cast except the ones in Talon since they don’t value life as much.
We didn’t even see any inner turmoil or what her constant working herself to death is doing to her or her friends and the effect that has. There was nothing to be had in this short no emotional resonance either.
There’s no character to them though, they’re just blank faces and disembodied screaming. They’re no different to the soldiers in the Last Bastion short, except there were at least 20+ on screen in the few seconds we get.
In short, no.
Because Dva has only lost lore since release and this has not made up for this fact. It hasn’t shown us anything we didn’t already know and with the snail’s pace that the lore is being drip fed to us in, it needed to be so much more. It felt rushed, poorly written and hasn’t done anything to make D.va any more or less of a person. She’s still perfect, without any flaws.
I understood what they were implying, but I think showing more footage of the battle with her team they flashed to would have really helped drive the point home. Maybe even during her battle with the Omnics attacking the city flashing memories of the big battle giving a PTSD vibe.
Her friend is telling her to take time off, she’s fearful of what may come and losing more of what she loves, show more of the loss to drive home the point of her resilience.
Overall I enjoyed the short. And at this point I wish they would go ahead and make a full movie.
But that’s just it. It doesn’t show any of that, its all implied. It could have been so much more than what it was. We could have had names or actual faces to the people she lost. I would have much preferred for it to show her training or to show that battle were she almost lost. Instead, we get this.
I guess, but this was pretty close to nothing.
Looks like we have to wait another year for actual lore again! Yay!
Edit: Just to clarify, I wouldn’t be anywhere near as critical if this short wasn’t clearly just pandering to the South Korean audience and if we got lore on a more steady basis. Or even if we just got lore a little bit more often.
Seeing your edit: to each their own. And yea devs need to make better decisions but tbf this isn’t nothing. This cinematic probably took a long time to develop (not the whole year, to clarify).
Anyways I’ll be anxiously awaiting a Zen cinematic. Hopefully it’s next.
Yes, it is pessimistic. Because after all this time, Dva has still only lost lore.
She used to be a pro star craft player. Now she’s a pro who may or may not have played star craft at some point. Her ace pilot story hasn’t changed at all.
I don’t think D.va started really having a story until the retcon.
While I absolutely hated it (Chu why ;-; ), at least they can actually put her current mess of bio information into a feasible background for someone who is supposed to be 19.
