D.Va's Defense Matrix is Too Powerful

So Im a D.Va Main (if you couldnt tell by my screen name) and I believe her Defense Matrix shield is just too powerful.

Often enough, I will be combating an enemy D.Va as Junkrat and my mines will be absorbed by her Defense Matrix. And when I am Mei and I use my Ult, her Defense Matrix can even absorb “Snowball” and completely nullifies my Ult! In my opinion, that is too powerful. D.Va’s Defense Matrix should only be able to absorb small items like bullets and energy beams/weapons and not large items like Junkrat’s landmines or Mei’s Snowball Ult.

I don’t know any D.Va mains who have thought this since 5v5. In 6v6 sure, but I don’t know how you think it’s too good in 5v5, especially in this economy.

A true D.Va main is well aware that Defense Matrix is a skill check for projectile heroes. In regards to Mei and Junkrat, in your example, you should know that these heroes—if they know what they are doing—will simply wait for you to flash your DM so they can then freely ult or do M1 damage in the entire 1-second forced downtime window after D.Va drops her matrix.

It’s as simple as paying attention during any fight against her.

I don’t feel bad for bronze-tier players who don’t understand how to play the game and who therefore:

  1. die from seemingly anything and everything
    – and –
  2. can’t successfully use their skills to accomplish much anything on their own.

Learning how to fight against each hero is part of the player growth experience in Overwatch. Learning these hero interactions makes you climb out of those nasty ranks, and it’s what makes the game fun and stand out against every other ordinary FPS out there. Unless goofing around in bronze is your idea of fun to begin with, of course.

The only skill it checks is if they can go back to spawn and swap to beams lol

In order for something to be a skill check, equal levels of skill have to be required from both sides to see if the opponent can outskill you and pass the skill check

Last time i checked pressing a button to delete damage didnt take much skill so why should anymore skill than pressing a button to deal damage be needed.

You cant have a skill check when your hero takes less skill. That’s literally just called gatekeeping

If your idea of “skill” only revolves around what you learned from playing rock-paper-scissors, or card games, sure.

For FPS mechanics, “skill” is also defined by your aim skill and discipline for when to shoot.

Which also covers this:

Player awareness and self discipline for when to use skills (and the right ones) is a skill.

I guess you could argue that lacking such discipline or awareness keeps you gatekept, but that’s a player issue that can be resolved by learning how to play against each hero.

Why does dva never have to pass any skill checks?

What is dvas skill check?

She just has every option available to her all the time.

She never has to worry about being out of position with 3 crutch abilities to save her if she ever gets punished

3 sec matrix
3 sec booster cd
Ult for free remech

Whenever dva gets out of position she will always have 1 of the 3 to guarantee an escape

Beams… Nothing feels better than outplaying a Zarya that thought they could win at the hero select screen even though they aren’t good at tank.

their profile is open, though they should prove their word by climbing to high ranks with this “overpowered” character

It doesn’t absorb Accretion. That’s a large projectile in this game. Concussion mine and Snowball aren’t that big.

While I also feel that current Dva is somehow pretty strong, I think your examples are bad. Also I dont think Dva is oppressive enough to deserve a nerf.

You sound new. Dm is only powerful until everyone switches to beams and mele, then it’s useless. Dva also has a massive critbox so it’s easy to burst her down once DM is used up.

Send a replay of you playing dva and I will tell you how you failed the skill check

Lol. Literally proving my point. You either go beams or lose at spawn vs a dva

Sick of the near 100% dvas in every match. Dva mirror matches every game

She can literally sit in your spawn and unless you go beams you wont kill her before she flies to safety. She is the biggest crutch hero around rn. What risk is there to playing dva when you can delete everyones damage, fly on a 3 sec cooldown and if you ever get demeched just ult for a free life

Literally freelo hero

The fact that mei’s ult is still considered a projectile after it hits the ground during the lifting animation is some BS, so I will grant them that.

DVa is one of the best tanks this season. I rarely play her and I can own games with her now

Skill checks are knowing how to go up against each kind of enemy and “dance” to their attacks in the correct order with your own follow ups. Of course, it’s more complicated than that, because the game doesn’t exist in a 1v1 void. It’s a team vs team encounter. The real skill check is watching for enemies using their abilities and jumping on them when their abilities are on cool down and yours are up, AND it’s how well you can combine your allies abilities with your own. Synergies have power. Exploiting them is skill.

That’s a counter. A hero facing a counter has a disadvantage when going up against it. Counters are naturally unavoidable in hero shooters due to their asymmetric kits. A good designed game minimizes the impact of these counters, so that while they are indeed harder and frustrating to go up against, they are not impossible—and allow player skill to shine through to victory, if they are good enough. Which is why D.Va can play around beam heroes like Zarya, but only if she plays more smartly and aggressively to win. Zarya, on the other hand, will have the upper hand against D.Va, and a relatively easier time fighting her.

Counters are for lazy players who don’t like to play hyper tensed into the tightest timing windows to win. They prefer easy engagements, hence all this talk and preference for “choosing the right counter,” e.g., “pick beam heroes against D.Va ‘to win’.”

If dva could actually be played around outside of countering her id agree

But she cant

If you are anyone but a beam hero the solution to dva is to switch to a hero with a beam or accept she will delete all your damage

There is no skill check playing against a dva other than just sat waiting for her DM to run out before you can actually play the game. There is no playing around it other than sat twiddling your thumb

If the matchmaker matched you against a D.Va you can’t handle with your current skill set, then yes, switching to a counter hero will “bring her down” to an easier level for you to handle, assuming you’re skilled enough with your choice of counter pick hero. Otherwise, if the D.Va is “just that good” then maybe you were simply meant to lose that match, so that yours and hers ranks adjust accordingly, and you both face more appropriate skilled players in your future matches.
