Dropping packets deep in Blizzard's network

i.imgur(dot)com/iDyNH0z.png

The pic I’m showing here is from Ping Plotter 5.
This graphically shows the traceroute to an Overwatch server I was playing on.

Whatever’s going on at hop 12 is causing intermittent lag and packet loss, making everyone freeze for a few seconds, and then quickly warp those last few seconds into a mad dash to “catch up.”

I am also seeing the same issue on a West Coast Burning Crusade Classic server.

Can’t post links for some reason.

The servers are setup to ignore the ping traffic from these types of tests as a protection against DDoSing. If the ping was really that high with huge loss, you wouldn’t be able to login or play. What usually matters is the line at the end, but PingPlotter is doing a bad job of parsing it.

The higher ping values seem to be occurring inside CogentCo’s peering partners, since that’s where the ping jumps are happening.

I also play on the Chicago and Los Angeles servers (the only two located in North America), along with thousands of other players. If the server was having an issue, we’d be seeing more than a handful of connection problem posts per day.

The peering partner in that test is also notorious for having high ping spikes. I’ve seen tests containing problems with them for the last 3 years.

So please, less trolling, more offering constructive information to the thread.

The thing is, it was responding for the first few minutes. The numbers shown were real responses and then it just got so bad I guess it pooped out. That’s why the graph shows something and then goes into the straight red. Either way, there were real issues going which seem to have been cleared up since my original post.

Hey there Skelzarr,

Thanks for reaching out on this. Taking a look over the provided pingplotter I do notice some packet loss on the hand-off between Twelve99 and Equinix. Keep in mind those are just peer networks that your ISP uses to route the signal to our game servers. Blizzard does not own either Twelve99 or Equinix!

Since Equinix is a pretty major peer network we use for the Chicago servers, if those nodes were having troubles we’d see a massive outage! Though we don’t have very many reports so I’m wondering if this is more related to the Twelve99 peer network.

One easy way to test this would be using a VPN/proxy service to reroute the signal. There are tons of free trial versions of programs like this available online. Just bare in mind that Blizzard does not directly support using those types of services, and not all of them will work well for gaming. Be sure to contact the software provider for those services for problems with setup or use.

In any case I do hope this information helps clear up what’s going on in the pingplotter report. If there’s anything else you might need just let us know!
