Double standards within the community?

Keep in mind that this is not a flame-thread and I would like all of you to avoid doing so. Let’s be mature.

What are some double standards in the Overwatch community that you’ve noticed? I am asking for clear examples that have direct correlation, that you think should be addressed for the betterment of the community.

I see a lot of support mains who constantly whine about genji’s mobility defending mercy’s now that she became flavor of the month lol…

I see a lot of DPS main speaking about Mercy main when Overwatch is a game where you should play all roles.

I mean the role passive he didn’t need.

Again he should get some nerfs reverted since the passive changed. At least give him some of his damage back.

If Mercy’s mobility is the flavor of the week to scream she’s op then give the mobile flanker his damage back to deal with her.

It’s not a double standard but it’s funny that Mercy and Genji mains regularly point fingers at each other for various reasons accusing each other of toxicity, whining, etc. But BOTH of those sects have probably the most problematic ppl maining them.

I’ve encountered SOOOO many toxic Mercy and Genji mains compared to the rest of the playerbase it’s incredible.

Genji has a large player base and mercy’s probably even larger.

So yeah, no doubt we also outnumber other mains in terms of toxicity lol…

Too many people use the words [insert role/hero here] mains without knowing if said person is a main to that role or hero. Too much ignorance, to be frank.

any answer given has an experience bias. Maybe a girl is getting flamed in game but she is also being super annoying. They are going to get flamed for being annoying regardless of gender but may feel more attacked due to a cultural narrative. A female may NEVER speak in chat and notice they never get flamed. Maybe they think it is because no one knows they are a girl, but also maybe its because if they dont use chat they have a LOT less reason to get flamed.

…I’ve noticed at times people are quite anti-toxicity whilst being quite flag-happy and toxic themselves, seems unusual to me…?

I think the worst and most flagrant double standard is how blizzard punishes players for being toxic, while allowing players who provoke it to act with impunity.

For example you get a pistol only mercy on your team… you get upset with them, you get an “abusive chat” report and eventually a punishment… meanwhile that pistol mercy player will nerver see a sabotage punishment…

Essentially blizzard allows players to negitively impact the experience for others though action, then punishes those who respond negitively to it…

Battle mercy is just a really flagrant example…

That is not quite true…

the order of those events where as follows:

  1. supports: flankers mobility is too strong
  2. flanker mains: ‘Lol git good and aim better 9head’
  3. flankers now: ‘Mercy too mobile, nerf this’
  4. support mains: ‘lol git good and aim better 9head’.

It is hardly double standard if you used that on us first… It is actually double standard to not let us have this one.

so yeah…

This is a game where you have to respect cool downs and we all know this. You don’t waste time shooting a gold Orisa, you don’t try to one vs. one a Bastion when he isn’t in recon, and the list goes on. If I started a thread in these forums to complain about how Bastion is broken because DPS can’t win a fight with him when he’s in assault mode people would laugh at me, and rightly so.

If you’re whining about support CDs though suddenly the rules change.

Likewise it’s a fact that ‘kill X,’ can be a win condition in many games. Kill the Tracer or the Doomfist that is farming your backline, kill the Pharah who is blowing everything up from off-angles, kill the Widow who keeps popping heads, and on it goes. Sometimes this may oblige you to counter-pick.

Most of us are OK with this unless it’s a support. Then watch the tank and DPS players cry.

It’s about time we call this crap out. im sick and tired of people conflating hypermobility to mainly genji but never talk about many other heroes who have far more superior mobility than him.

Fair point, but many? The only hero who has better mobility than Genji is Mercy. You can argue Echo and Tracer are comparable, but Tracer trades vertical mobility for horizontal and has to juggle cooldowns and Echo only has one busted skill on CD.

Who might they be?
