It doesn’t matter what you do. “Oh, just counter him!” Okay, let’s run through his so-called “counters”, shall we?
Sombra: Hack him all you want. Doesn’t matter, he already has a trillion extra health from all the cooldowns he spams. By the time anyone even looks at him, the silence has worn off and he’s already used one of his get-out-of-jail-free cards.
McCowboy: You can try to throw that grenade at him. It travels so slowly, he’s probably already gone by the time it would land. Unless he just stunned you first. Then you’re just dead. GG.
Roadhog: lol
Orisa: Well, now we’re getting somewhere. But her bullet travel is too slow to reliably hit him while he flies around the map, by the time you can get any substantial damage done he’s already waited out your fortify and he’s punched you into a wall.
Bastion: Bastion kind of demolishes everything right now, aside from maybe DVa or Sigma.
You get the picture.
His cooldowns are too short, he stuns and flies around destroying everything in his path, and unless you have four people targeting him at once he’ll just dominate everything. Stun, boop, bang bang, you’re dead, no opportunity to fight back, no counterplay. Every game with him in it is a living hell. Enough already.
He has short cooldowns because his only sustain/ mitigation comes from hitting enemies with his abilities (only like 30 per hit) and a 2.5 second block that only gives 80% mitigation from the front. Not only that, but look at his damage.
55 I think per full shot from his shotgun, which is slow enough he needs to lead his shots at like 5-6 meters unlike most if not every other non-explosive projectile hero and is about as small as hit scans are.
A slam for 50.
RP, which opens him up to damage and does, with a wall impact, 100-125 (empowered)
And his ult won’t even do 100 unless he lands right on the target.
Damage wise, he has among the lowest damage outputs in the game for tanks and one of the lowest mitigations, his mobility is his only saving grace. Mobility that would be useless if he had longer cooldowns like you want.
The only Doom players that offer no counterplay are ones who basically mastered him like ZBRA. You might find competent Doom players below Masters, but good ones are another story, especially if they aren’t stacked with a good synergistic team.
You want counters? Here are some, and not just people who can easily negate him, this also includes people who can easily escape or reposition to kill him:
Pharah
Mei
Cassidy
Ana
Junkrat
Moira (orb)
Wrecking Ball
Hog
Bastion
Widow can hard counter him in QP
Sombra
Echo
Orisa
Symmetra
Torbjorn
Baptiste
Kiriko
Lifeweaver
Illari
That’s plenty right there, like half the roster. If they increase his cooldowns, they would NEED to increase his mitigation (overhealth gains and block %) and they would need to make his abilities easier to hit or do more damage.
I always wait for him to slam before I hit him with a rock. (Sigma)
Then my Ana, angry from getting killed by Doom, will hit him with a Dart.
At this time I have put my Barrier up to block his supports from healing him.
Ana does her combo, I do my Sphere Punch combo.
Doom usually flees but if another member of my Team joins the dogpile, Doom gets deleted.
For real, especially in QP where he cannot tank at all. I mean, wow, an extra 50 hp compared to OW1 and missing like 70% of his damage/ CC. He’s so good he can survive 2 extra shuriken from Genji and even be OHK by Widow. He’s not worth playing there outside of FFA or Mayhem.
I actually just played against DF pretty much half the day today as Baptiste, my go-to support these days generally (I also play Kiriko/Illari a lot, the rest is situational). With the exception of a few games where I was just totally not aware of what was happening around me (my fault), avoiding him was super easy: crouch, jump away. Don’t even have to do the full crouch either depending on where you are and the map.
If I’m on Kiriko? TP to teammate. Or wall climb. Maybe throw in a suzu for fun just in case.
Illari? I can use her jumping ability thing and knock him back, or, if that’s not possible, I can use it to move myself away, usually it’s enough to get me over a wall and totally out of his LOS.
If I played Mercy (I mained her in OW1, don’t really enjoy her now as much) I’d just fly away to a team mate.
On the rare occasion I play Ana (I’m not that great at her): sleep dart.
So as a support, those are my ways to counter his damage or even being hit by him. I can look at him all I want. In fact, with some heroes, esp. Bap, I can often times get behind him and kill him because he usually dives way far from his team, focuses on someone else once he loses me, and I just shoot him in the head from behind.
Is he frustrating if you don’t know how to counter him? Totally. I’d suggest checking out some heroes that are good at countering him based on what role you prefer. I used to think the same as you until I started just thinking about my hero kit more and how I could utilize it.
The damage you’re imagining will take a lot longer than 0.5 seconds, he is open for most of which, and if your whole team is lined up to be punched, he deserves that damage/ overhealth. He’s basically a throw pick below Masters, especially in OQ and arcade where he’s missing 1/3 of his health, making him a tank who can’t tank on top of the fact he’s missing 70% of his original damage and CC. If you have difficulty with Doomfist when he’s fighting with 3 different handicaps, that says a lot more about your skill than how broken he is.
I rarely see DF steamroll, but I am sick of seeing him in 50% of matches. With him or against him, it’s become really tedious.
There are effectively three tanks right now:
Zarya, because she’s good on every map and in every team and has no specific counter-hero.
Orisa, because she’s a reliable defender, when you want a break from Zarya.
Doomfist, because Genji mains need to queue All Roles to get their weeklies done.
I don’t need Doomfist to change in abilities, but if he’d get moved to Damage, where he clearly should be, and had his health drop accordingly, that’d be grand. If we can only have one Tank on the team, I want that player to actually play as a Tank. People who want to solo flank should play Damage; Tank players should be playing with their team.
(The monotony of Zarya and Orisa is something we’ll have to tackle separately.)
Doomfist needs reworked back to the damage role, but with less CC, displacement, and burst damage potential than he had in OW1. Tank Doomfist is hard to play alongside, since he cannot mitigate damage done to his team at all (he literally blocks only for himself like a Genji Deflect does). But also, just because he is a Tank right now does not mean that playing against all his CC is fun.
Here’s the direction I would move Doomfist in:
Doomfist
Moved from Tank to Damage Role
Base health reduced from 450 to 250
Power Block
Ability Removed
Rising Uppercut
OW1 Rising Uppercut Added
Reduce upwards travel and knock-up of Uppercut
Seismic Slam
Now also allows for targeting the ground mid-air to travel downward (damage ramping from OW1 would stay gone, and Doomfist keeps the OW2 verticality to his slam)
Rocket Punch
No longer stuns
Wall impact damage removed
Knock-back reduced
Impact damage buffed (would do less than 200 impact damage)
Charge up time buffed
Meteor Strike
Slow on enemies removed
Outer-ring damage buffed
Rocket Punch would likely do 150 damage with a 0.75 second charge up time, Seismic Slam could do 60 damage, Rising Uppercut could do 80 damage. I think these would be good numbers to start at, but it would require testing.
In every single one of these cases except Ana, he can easily chase using either slam or his ultimate, by which time his punch will be off cooldown again and you’re just as screwed as before.
As for Ana, he wakes up after less than two seconds because he’s a tank, and you’re just as vulnerable as before.
See above, I already explained how all his “counters” are useless against him.
It isn’t about damage. It’s about using Javelin to cancel Block/Punch. You can basically shut down anything he wants to do. Then Spin him someplace he doesn’t want to be and force out Slam as an escape.
I suppose the only answer is that we have two completely different views. For me, what I wrote works. It doesn’t seem to for you, so I don’t know what to tell you since it’s not an issue for me. Not trying to come across as rude, but hey it’s text and you lose all nuance and tone. What role do you normally play btw? I only play support.
