Doomfist is not (that) bad, Doomfist players are bad

Okay, yes obviously he is not a meta tank or anything, but the extent to which people are exaggerating this heroes weakness is ASTOUNDING. Doomfist is not all that weak, even with his short comings, he still has a lot of strengths and can do a lot when being used correctly, EMPHASIS ON USED CORRECTLY. Doomfist is actually relatively popular in high elo because he’s very slippery, has some of the best CC in the game, and is a very VERY good counter to a lot of different heroes. When you use him well he’s good, not great, but good.

I’ve been playing my tank placements, and the difference between DF in T500 and ~Plat is astounding, and I’ll tell you why. Doomfist players still play him like a DPS hero. They don’t protect their allies, they don’t use punch correctly, and they very VERY clearly look for damage and kills over displacement and disruption. It’s like watching a low elo ball player, they just simply do not understand the fundamentals of the hero.

Doomfist players are still hellbent on trying to use him like a solo-flanker DPS hero, that’s just not his function. Y’all need to learn to adapt to the role he’s now in and drop your preconceived notions of what he is meant to do.

He needs buffs, but the other half of the issue not discussed as much is Doom players need to re-learn the hero to stop sucking at him even with buffs. It’s going to take a while since buffing him isn’t going to mean his mains won’t play like trash because they are used to DPS. Tank players who didn’t main him before that are interested also need to suddenly learn how to play Doomfist which is a journey on its own for someone who hasn’t before. Why go through all that when other tanks give instant value for less thinking, skill and effort?

They are looking to increase the uptime on his empowered punch in season 2, which is good because right now any effort that doesn’t involve an empowered punch is usually useless beyond stunning channeled abilities and jumping everywhere. He can’t use it enough to have a big enough impact in most games. I’m still of the opinion they need to bring the slowdown effect back on slam and then give him a new ultimate that is more tank focused and not a DPS ultimate with tweaked numbers.

For now while we wait for Doomfist to evolve you can carry yourself with knowledge in most games. It could be helpful to watch some of the best Doomfist one tricks like Zbra, Quake, Chipsa, etc. They play in environments where Doom is even less likely to work so picking up the things they (and their teams) do can help. One of the best tricks that should be common knowledge right now is to rocket punch first to force a reaction and then animation cancel with block to power up your punch which then instantly resets your punch CD - lots of people don’t even know about the CD reset so they just sit there and melt while blocking when they could instead stun the enemy team or just retreat immediately and save the punch.

Not to say the one tricks don’t get frustrated either - GetQuakedOn sounds like he is on the near edge of a mental breakdown whenever he does everything about the hero perfectly and it amounts to nothing anyway. Chipsa is surprisingly chill though and knows Doom isn’t THAT trash and usually mocks dumb buff ideas like more punch damage. Zbra is Zbra, that man is just built differently I don’t know how to explain it.

I got 1 hour on Doom total from OW1. Doom mains are chads and deserve the maximum buffs :100:

Exactly this.
Anyone playing him knows its horrible and painful. Even zbra admits the hero is very bad

The problem with doomfist is that he’s a DPS dropped into a tank role and wasn’t changed to really create space for teammates or truly soak up damage like other tanks

Doomfist is a good character but they need to fundamentally from the ground up needed to change him and they didn’t

Mei even right now with no CC would be a better tank than Doomfist at this current juncture

I wonder how many top GM players have avoided doom players like ZBRA… He even says a lot avoid him…

I mostly agree. He’s good in the right hands, but also needs the right comp (both team and enemy) moreso than most tanks, but he’s not immediately invalid.

A lot of Doom players frustrated by being yelled at for playing Doom should be mad at other Doom players. I’m in gold/plat (haven’t done my placements yet so who knows, maybe silver!) and my experience so far has been a Doom player playing into a comp that counters him, getting neutralized for 5 minutes, and then switching to another tank with 15 seconds left and losing. It’s maddening. I don’t flame anyone for picking Doomfist, but I’m immediately upset when I see Doom as my tank because of this.
