I was wondering how the report system works. I have reported players for racial slurs like players in chat calling other players [Removed] and really vulgar things about players and their families and nothing happens. I have actually seen people laugh and make fun of someone with MS because he could not aim well because his fingers don’t work properly. This is sickening to me. So can someone explain to me how the report system works? Is it worth even reporting players?
It does work but not as fast and frequent as people expect it to. If 3-4 people report someone for being racist that will do nothing. You need alot more than that. For example someone saying EZ at the end of every game for 2 days straight will probably get a warning or action taken against them because people are salty AF in this game. Its all about numbers.
It’s automated. Once a threshold of reports is reached, they get silenced or banned.
It works on PC, but I have never gotten the “Your report has resulted in a punishment” whatever for xbox…
Yes, it contributes to eventual actions that will be taken against those players, assuming they continue to behave that way.
For most categories, like Abusive Chat in this case, it takes many reports from different players to cause a punishment. Since the system is largely automated, it can’t really decide how severe your report is compared to others. Ultimately, action will only be taken after it becomes clear that the community widely agrees this person is a problem.
You can generally expect that, if you’re targeting your reports appropriately, the people you report will eventually face consequences, because you’ll be far from the only person reporting them if they continue to behave that way. The effect will almost never be immediate, though.
It’s based on the number of reports and nothing else. Once they reach x reports they get suspended. The validity of those reports is irrelevant.
I’ve only had it work for reporting the find a group titles. As for people throwing games I’ve never had a report have action taken
I’ve played for several seasons, and I can attest that I’ve never once received word that any action has been taken against people throwing a game. Even the ones who suicide repeatedly by jumping off the map, multiple times (like I was literally stuck on the same team with this one guy who kept suiciding off the map three games in a row).
As for OP, I’ve never gotten any notice of my reports for abusive chat. Even in one case when someone on the other team repeatedly told their teammates to go kill themselves because they were losing, nothing was ever done.
It definitely makes me hopeless in terms of the games most blatant problems being addressed
This. I’ve reported players and never seen anything, but I’ve also reported players and seen an immediate ‘thank you’ response when I’d log in again.
Your mileage may vary.
If a player hits a certain amount of reports the system automatically bans him. The issue is people abused the system and just reported everyone who refused to play the hero they demanded him to play. Blizzard set the threshold for bans higher to protect players from unjustified bans and now you need a ridiculous amount of reports to get banned.
Your reports matters and reporting helps identify consistently disruptive players. Remember if you see this message, that means a person you have reported have been actioned to some extent:
It is important to remember that nearly every single one of us gets reported at least once, but less than 5% ever reach a threshold where they are actioned once, and less than 1% will ever prove to be so consistently disruptive to where any form of an account action fails to correct their behavior.

Yes, and by extension quite well in my end. Probably have 10+ bans under my belt.
I’m constantly getting reports of people that I reported getting banned so I guess it’s working.
its simple: an automated algorithm thats left completely unchecked and unmanaged pile up the reports the player receives and without giving two dimes if the reports are valid accusations of violations or just trigger-happy kids taking petty revenge, said algorithm will then warn or punish the player (some people often said they were suspended and AFTER it wore out and they were back in the game, the reports warning showed up). This is one of te any reasons players get paranoid or downright discouraged when playing OW. You can’t offer valid criticism without risking a report added to the pile you’re left UNAWARE of it’s progress until its too late.
You just showed the problem with the system it has a threshold and it shouldn’t because some things are worse than others and actions should sometimes be taken even if It didn’t reach the threshold.
The opposite is also true if the threshold was reached because people reported but nothing bad actually happened the person will still get punished.
An automated system like this is bad and does nothing to actually help.
It works like the swarm, the more zerglings report the higher the chance you will get suspended.
first suspensions will be a mute
then 1-3 weeks for 3 suspensions
then ban
I did not show anything that it being automated, actions are still decided on by Blizzard Customer Service. I merely quoted specific averages which is tracked by Blizzard (watch the video I linked please).
idk I get a “good boy” after every crude group name I report on ps4
I have seen this video before on multiple discussions in many different games and it’s a big fat publicity stent and has no bearing on what is actually happening and that was the consensus on that video every time it came up.
Because companies set their on rules about what they find as disruptive there is no governing body that has a standard so they can spend less on moderting tools.
Those numbers are also very wrong because they are based on data that comes from those same companies so it’s based on their definition on what’s "disruptive ".
I can say that out of 10 games I play 6 have toxic people and I report each and every one and I can also say that 1 out of 10 reports gets me a massage that an action was taken.
But those are my numbers and they are a small sample size and so are irrelevant until an independent research is done that actually show real numbers based on a large sample group all the numbers in the world are wrong.
The fact remains blizzard is doing the minimum that is required to deal with toxicity and is automating everything and you can see it on this forum there is 0 human moderation here.
Out of my 25 years of gaming and playing almost every online game under the sun by far this has the most severe problem with toxicity and i’m not the only one saying it.
The reporting system is broken and is ineffective.
