When McCree referred to Winston as “the monkey”, Echo seemed confused like she didn’t know who or what he was talking about (I mean, how could she not know that by monkey hes referring to Winston right?)
If she doesn’t know Winston then from when does she know McCree? We know Winston was already working for Overwatch when McCree was in Blackwatch from the Uprising comic, and they probably worked there until everything disbanded.
So that could mean either Echo knows McCree from before joining Blackwatch or from after leaving it. Or she worked at/for Overwatch/Blackwatch but somehow never met Winston? Not sure.

Retribution was before Uprising. McCree worked for Blackwatch before the uprising comic. he worked for them from like…some point in his early 20s until he was 31 or so, when he would leave Blackwatch altogether.
McCree would definately know if she knows winston, he sorta just left her to fend for herself, so we kinda have to assume shes pretty well informed and capable. If i was left like that id be pissed tho.
She knows Mccree from when he was IN blackwatch. How do I know? He still has arm in his blackwatch skin. She asked him when did he lose his arm so she doesn’t know that he left. She was probably packed away after the Petras Act.

Obviously the monkey/scientist bit is an inside joke for fans in the know, but Echo genuinely didn’t seem to know who McCree was referring to when he said monkey. Which is confusing, because who else could McCree be referring to but Winston? And if Echo is important to Overwatch or worked for them, how could she not know Winston?
Unless she’s one of those humorously charming literalist type characters (like Drax in GotG) and since Winston is technically an ape she functionally can’t put two and two together who McCree is referring to.

Yes, she would have to know him from before he lost his arm, but we don’t know when or how that happened. It could have been anytime between Retribution and the Recall, before during or after the Petras act.
For all we know McCree could have still had his arm after OW disbanded, then he met Echo afterwards, then she was put away, then he lost his arm, then the recall happened.
Dude honestly if you got genuine confusion from her tone then i have no words other than you need to interact with humans more xD She obviously knows who Winston is but she had also clearly not been active for some time so she would not know about any running gags or inside jokes between the members of overwatch
Nah I think her AI probably only classifies him as an ape instead of a monkey. Those are two different things, which is why she was confused.

I don’t think Echo knows Winston as she was surprised when McCree mentioned “Say hello to the monkey”, Echo replied “Monkey?” which seemed to question who Winston was.

I think Echo’s response was more so one of shock or disbelief with McCree calling Winston a monkey rather than what he clearly is; a gorilla/ape as well as a scientist.

I’ve got an impression that she just is not used to refer to Winston as a monkey. There’s no reason for McCree to mention Winston so vaguely if Echo does not know him.

While that’s a possibility, it still isn’t strictly clear. It’s entirely possible that McCree specifically says monkey because he’s aware Echo has never met him, so he uses a very specific unmistakable defining feature of Winston so that when she does meet him Echo will know very clearly to whom she should convey his regards.

I’d like to think bc she’s a robot it’s so literal she can’t draw a comparison from ape to monkey but I have a feeling that’s not the case lol

Probably as an omnic her humor is a bit out of touch. Probably thought “monkey? Did ovw get another highly intelligent sapien during my slumber?” And “winston is a gorilla mccree not a monkey. Pls get your taxonomy straight next time snicker”

I always thought it was just she didnt view him as a “monkey” but as a being whom is a scientist. As if she doesn’t see what you are, just who you are.
