Does anyone else find kiriko painfully generic

Disclaimer: A reminder that this is not a discussion for hero gameplay design or balance. this is talking about the physical design of the hero.

This is coming from a personality and design standpoint, not gameplay. I just can’t shake why this character seems somewhat underwhelming to me. Even the dev team describing her makes her sound devoid of any flaws, she’s just a cool tough ninja girl and that’s about it. they say she’s a bit of a trickster too but then again, nothing from the way she talks even to how she designed besides arguably the fox really indicates that. She just feels incredibly vanilla and uninteresting to me personally

Here is a one word answer that fits the 20 character minimum: No

Fair enough, She just isn’t really appealing to me. No shame if you do actually enjoy her

Well SuperTF did mention “You know who she reminds me of, Valkyrie from Apex”

I don’t know much about Valkyrie’s personality since I don’t play apex. What’s she like?

Valkyrie is the daughter of Viper (a boss from Titanfall 2).

She’s a bit of a hotshot: sarcastic, a bit prideful, but capable of handling herself in a fighter.

Pretty much, she’s a flyboy but female.

There have been many threads about that. She is generic indeed.

i can see that point of view really. i thought her voice acting was a bit generic. she does seem to look like tracer or dva as well. BUT i will still try and play her, it all depends on her gamestyle and the fluidity of it. i may like it or i may not, have to try it first

as for all the new hero releases i did like junker queen the best but i think its a tie between sojourn and kiriko for second for me personally… both are meh okish. i did get the hang of sojourn a bit in the betas and had a bunch of potg’s eventually but thats when i was kinda realizing her op’ness and im just an average mechanical aim guy

I see. She actually doesn’t sound bad to me at least, I think the big problem with OW characters as a whole and def this one is that they really don’t have too many major flaws (besides a select few) so they just feel really smoothed out and a bit too perfect. If kiriko was more akin to that I actually might enjoy her more

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t modesty a big part of Japans culture, they aren’t really known for being eccentric, she’s wearing traditional outfit to keep with the lore? She’ll prolly have other skins later on that are fancier

I’m not exactly sure? It might be but then again from what we saw of her Yokai squad, they don’t exactly all dress traditionally and she is meant to be a blend of the old customs and new customs, I just think they could have incorporated that a tad bit better

I have the problem that in gameplay and the gameplay trailer, she sounded absolutely generic

But in the short story
man
She does feel like a real person

Take Mei and D.Va and put them together.

Remember the previous hero 2 months ago?

Her name is JunkerQueen and she’s a racist mass murder who is full of flaws.

Are all heroes supposed to be the same?

Okay but the artist get new content so why complain

They even explained it for non weebs while she does look that way. Its kind of a combination of ninja and shrine maiden in modern. If you have that in mind it looks very fitting. Every single detail about her character has a background and everything fits perfectly together. Maybe she looks generic to you because she has just the still the “calssic” look on her that you see from other asian characters? I think its cool.

As I said, not every hero fits this. Just most of them. A lot of the antagonists in OW do have flaws such as Junkerqueen, but a lot of the hero’s on the nonevil factions have few. :woman_shrugging:

Does a character have to be flawed these days? Cant a girl just be good?
