Found out that there is a person in our community playing Overwatch to the point of where they are skipping meals and not taking baths trying to be on a Grandmaster level.
I respect the dedication but if you have not washed or showered for 4 days on end and refusing to bathe, would that be a red flag to you?

They’d be hurting their gameplay by neglecting their health like that.

Yeah, thats become unhealthy. Whats their diet like? Are they neglecting other bodily needs too?

Yes that is the very definition of addiction: When the thing takes away your normal, health/social/body functions or maintenance.
Severely disrupting your real life qualifies as that. Saying “its a challenge” for YT or whatever is an excuse/cope.

Now this is what I call dedication!

That is the reddest of all possible red flags. That flag is RGB 256 0 0.

It can lead to serious issues upto neurological disorders if food intake is not proper.
Generally cut their internet cable works.
And say ow servers are trash.

Yes.
Try to tell them that they’ll play better when they’re better rested and fed well.
Even the pros have schedules to follow, with freetime and gym appointments on top of lunchbreaks.

I’d get it if they were like dedicating that to making money or something… but all that for Overwatch?
that is incredibly sad
no game is worth risking your health over…and hopefully they have some friends that can help them…

Yeah that’s pretty much not alright. This person needs psychological help. This feels like a compulsion simmilar to gambling addiction (i’ll win the next one kinda though)
As a psychologist I can’t say much without detail, but if this behaviour repeats itself (and I bet this might not be the first time this happens) in other aspects of life this might be an undiagnosed neurologic condition. Either way, this is not healthy, but the fist step is for this person to recognize they are not in control and that they need actual help

Yeah that’s an issue. And as someone very very very on the spectrum I feel that. But yes try and get them out of their obsession mode or ends up being unhealthy usually.

I hope that person change such behavior. Has someone who has does this before and paid the price with health issues and other. It’s not worth it.

If he spends his time playing OW,he’s not dirty so he doesn’t need to wash and he’s not hungry since he does nothing so he doesn’t nee to eat.
Indeed, his behaviour is much better for the planet’s futur than the behaviour of most people on Earth so there is no red flag but a big GREEN flag.

There’s a fine line between dedication and obsession. The latter is all consuming and like a fire can burn you away into nothing.

I’m more a burn it all down kinda guy. Maybe suggest to them that skipping meals and hygiene isn’t enough - they should also consider performance enhancing substances. Throw an anchor, not a lifeline!
(I keed. This person honestly needs help and compassion.)

Okay, but seriously though, maybe if they become an addy daddy, snort some Gfuel… Perhaps they will hit GM and go back to being normal. It just might work.
