Do you remember when Mr. Krabs opened the Krusty Krab 2?

That’s basically what this is. I wasn’t expecting a big difference when playing the beta, and it is better than OW1 regardless of what Supports who are used to afking in the backline are saying on here, but the fact we waited 4 years for this makes me think what took this so long?

engine upgrade, new maps, internal issues that we could never know
game development isnt an easy thing to do, and from what I gathered blizzard in general takes a long time to make and develop games

Their are multiple compounding reasons not just one, so don’t nit pick one as if it was the only thing.

A world pandemic that forced most games and companies in general to stop functioning for about 5 months plus, as they move thousands of employees into an at home enviroment. While aslo dealing with slowed development do to it for several reasons. (

Secondly Bobby forced the team to put resources into OW1 specific content mid develoment then forced them to drop it and move back ow2. Lossing multiple months of dev time.

They also had to split their time between OW1 patches/skins/basic up keep and more, OW2 PVE which was the main focus (selling point), and the reworked PVP made to fix a good number of OW1 issues.

they finally decided to put PVE on hold and split the release so that they can get PVP finished out the door, So they can then Focus working only on two games instead of 3.

a bit more in the mix. But ya development wasn’t exactly smooth.

They pretty much made the same mistake with ow2 as CD projekt did with cyberpunk and started hyping it up way too early. I mean fair enough, you can’t really predict world wide epidemic and multiple simultaneous lawsuits, but i don’t think the backlash would’ve been this massive if they just kept developing ow2 silently in the background and announced it like half a year ago.

They more or less had to otherwise they would have seemed to have just stopped updating the game for no reason. And for the most part would 100% seem like they just abandoned ow.

And without the carrot on the stick of OW being in the future people would just have left OW and moved on in mass.

You didn’t wait 4 years for “this”. What we have right now is just a closed beta test of the PvP. Not even all the maps we already know of, like Rio, are there. Plus, there are multiple new heroes coming. What took the longest about it all is PvE. They announced the PvP changes and got them done in a few months.

Will it be worth the wait? Not sure. Does the game look too much like the original one? In my opnion yes, not because it plays like the original one (Some people expected a whole new game for some reason), but because they didn’t even bother updating some assets. Besides the new lighting, we only got veeeery minor, lore related updates to the maps.

Yeah, kinda damned if you do damned if you don’t situation.
Would be interesting to see what was the lowest number of players ow1 has had. The activeplayer only has stats back to 2019 and the number has been rising ever since.
