Do you need 144 fps for a 144hz monitor?

My PC can’t break 100 fps, and I hear 144hz monitors are really good. But it makes sense that you need 144 fps for 144hz right? I just don’t know whether to save for a new PC or monitor first

To take advantage and see the full refresh rate, yes.

It would be a waste otherwise.

If you have a 60hz monitor now, I suggest seeing what you can do about OC-ing it, you might be able to squeeze out enough power to get some more frames out of it. As a no cost stand-in solution.

You could save yourself some money and get a 75hz monitor instead. It’s an improvement over 60hz and you’re already getting enough frames.

Otherwise, upgrade your PC first.

You could also try “overclocking” your monitor. Some 60 Hz monitors can work at 66-75 Hz, you can make a custom resolution in your video card settings.
But definitely go for a PC upgrade instead of a gaming monitor considering the price.

Upgrade your PC first to make sure the system can handle it.

you will not see the difference between 100hz and 144hz, but u will see diffetence between 60 hz and 100 hz. THe point is comfort 100fps-100hz at least.

You could buy it but then you would need to lock it to 100hz. I would reccomend buying a new pc first

Pc upgrade first, then monitor.

i too got a 144hz monitor but my pc can’t break past 105 fps.
so if your pc isn’t strong enough you may not get the value out of the monitor you end up getting.

still more frames are massive improvements over 60 fps.

been able to hit more shots as snipers since i got more fps.

On what settings do you play and what is your render scale?
What is your GPU and CPU?

From what i can tell it’s seems if you can’t get more than 100fps than mean your average is much lower, and your 0.1% low fps(basically the average amount of fps drops) can be even below 60.

On 144hz monitor basically any fps more than 60 you should notice an improvements, but at the same time you will notice more fps drops, it just depends on the differences you have between the averages to the drops fps.

Back when i started playing I had 30fps max, couldn’t 1 v 1 a baby D.va as a reaper with full health back then. 60hz was a great improvement. 144hz was overwhelmingly better. Also playing at 100fps with a 60hz monitor gives much less input lag than 60fps on a 60hz monitor, this helps you as Mccree/Widow/Hanzo.

You could also get a gsync or freesync monitor depending on your graphics card, that way the monitor’s refresh rate will “follow” the fps you are outputting.
once you do upgrade then you can still get the benefit of 144 fps, without any issues today ^^

It’s not worth paying for if you don’t get the frames.

However, if you plan on upgrading the pc parts holding you back within the next year, get it or put the money aside for later (monitor prices do drop but a lot less than other parts, but with HDR around the corner the 144’s will come down lower), there is no point in buying an interim monitor now and having to spend again later.

CPU: AMD Fx 4350 4.2Ghz quad core
GPU: 1050 Ti

All settings low / off - 100% render scale

I see… In this case think the CPU might be more issue than the GPU… that’s is really old generation of AMD CPU, and from my experience OW is heavily CPU demanding.

But this one, you really should reduce it to 75%, it will give you a big fps boost even tho it’s more about the GPU than the CPU. Try this and than see what your average fps and the lows.

Btw even some Pro use 75% render scale with their monster PC, it’s better anyway for the input lag and other performances values.

What kind of joke is that

That is very wrong. The difference between 100 and 144 is very noticeable.

I would reitereate opak’s statement. Was gonna be my first suggestion. Try reducing the renderscale and see what FPS you get.

In order for a 144hz monitor to work at 144hz, the game MUST run at 144FPS or higher. If the frame rate falls below 144FPS it is very noticeble and the game appears “choppy” or has extremely heavy “motion blurr”. Which on this game is frequent and annoying.

Either it’s something that depend on some specific hardware or software settings, or it’s just a myth.

I played a lot on 100fps/120fps on 144hz monitor before i bought a better PC, there was no “choppy” stuff nor “motion blurr” effect.

The only downside was the fps drops to 60fps(and even below rarely) in some of the heavy fights with 8 ults.
