Do y'all remember the Sombra ARG?

Do y’all remember when they cared?

When ow was relevant.
Now it’s not relevant AT ALL.
There are indie games doing better than ow lol.

That ARG was the best thing ever.

But now they put out heroes that have little to no hints to ever pre existing in the lore prior to their release lol

That arg was a badly made mess, how quickly people forget.

It mainly flopped because people were apparently too quick on solving the ARG. The dev team had not expected the community to be this clever/savvy, and as a result we were left waiting about 2 months until Sombra was revealed/released.

I actually enjoyed it - if you didn’t then fair enough. But it was the most fun I had for a hero release in Overwatch - nothing has matched my hype

Jeff’s direct comments on this were that it was pointless… they just weren’t any good at it and they would likely never attempt it again.

tbh i’m 99% sure there was supposed to be an ARG for Mauga that got scrapped when they scrapped Mauga for Sigma. There was the secret code on the Baptiste sheet from Nguyen that had a mauga signature, and it related to Moira as well.

I think it just took too long

Since release until October, that’s a lot IMO
It should’ve started in like August or after ana, because the reveal was one of the best reveals IMO

There was speculation, but after reading Jeff’s thoughts on how the ARG for Sombra went, I seriously doubt it.

Yep. I remember the Lumerico timer that counted down for a while and everybody was super excited to see it. Then it revealed basically nothing.

You mean the ARG that got everyone fed up when they put nothing but teaser after teaser, eventually making Blizz decide that it’s better to put a small teaser than immediately putting the actual proper hero like what they did with Ana?

Yea, I remember, that’s how most hero release been tbh.

When there was no OWL

You know that Jeff actually does regret making the ARG, right?
Literally because the community solved it too fast.
That’s why he regrets making it.

Yes, I remember! And even though it was kind of a mess, I still enjoyed it. It was really exciting when everyone was super interested in the OW lore and characters. Loved all the extra stuff, like the cinematics and comics. Checking the forums and latest rumors about what the next character will be. Searching the new maps for hidden clues and stuff. There doesn’t seem to be any of that anymore. New characters and maps are dropped with little fanfare. Nothing to build up much excitement. No new events, no new modes, it’s kind of disappointing.

The ARG was cool a cool idea, but it stretched out too long and there were too many countdowns leading to countdowns. It was nice to get little bits of lore with the Lumerico stuff, but it never really seemed to go anywhere. My wild theory is that there was a technical issue that unexpectedly pushed Sombra’s release back so they had to stretch the ARG out longer than anticipated.

If they were to do another one in the future each stage should alternate between revealing a solid piece of the hero’s lore or reveal a piece of information about the hero, and that it should last at most maybe a month. Things they could reveal about the character could be the character’s logo, weapon, an ability, silhouette, color scheme.

Blizzard also seemed to try to get a good lore drop and challenge event going on for Mauga, but unfortunately that seemed to fizzle as he got turned into Sigma. That probably would have been Blizzard’s best hero release if that all came together.

Rose-tinted glasses.

Most people agreed the ARG went on far too long and wasn’t handled that well.

The many breakdowns and sh*t lost i’ve witnessed and tried to tone/calm down cause of this ARG is not something i’d be pleasently nostalgic about honestly.

All we got in return was a spray and we had to rely on two leaks to even get an idea of what she looked like. I think her design reveal wouldve been a much better official reward for the whole thing.
