Do we really need hitscan in the game?

Why not have really fast projectiles for current hitscan weapons? And nerf pharah/ echo slightly so that they dont run rampant. Also, bullet drop for more heroes. Those things make weapons feel more impactful. realistic and thus satisfying to me.
I know some people say ow maps dont have long enough lines of sight for it to make a difference, but hitscan having no travel time is always a huge difference, requires 0 leading, there is a big difference between just clicking on a head and having to react to enemy movement and adjust aim.

Soooo let’s all just play Battlefield then

its not like battlefield is a bad game or something. there are plenty of things that would separate overwatch from other games even if there were no hitscan weapons. i would like to hear some good reasons for having hitscan thats all. i mean i can name a few decent reasons like less stress on the server, facilitating “hitscan skill” and not only “projectile skill” but they dont outweigh the benefits of sense of satisfaction and easier balancing having everyone as projectile would provide in my opinion.

Hyper mobility would need to be reduced, all in all making the game a much slower experience

Is hitscan considered to be the counter to hypermobility? I certainly dont think of it that way. Tracer is the epitome of hypermobility, and has the smallest hitbox in the game, yet i still feel very comfortable playing projectile heroes vs her. If anything, hypermobility is the counter to hitscan imo.

And why would these things make everything feel “more impactful and satisfying”?

As stated above, it sounds more like you just want to play battlefield. That’s not really what this game is about. OW isn’t trying to be hyper realistic with projectile based bullet mechanics and bullet drop. Leave those mechanics to the tactical/realism shooters.

I would enjoy it if mei has bullet drop. Doesnt really make sense for a chunk of ice to keep going forever.

Battlefield is a casual game, i will add a failed casual game.

Team oriented skill based game use hitscan weapons, game like counter strike, siege and valorant.

To overwatch use only projectiles based weapons and need skill need an higher movement speed, like fps arena.

The whole point of overwatch is its not supposed to be realistic.

I would just play r6 siege if I wanted realism.

Mccree on live would like to speak to you about tracer.

Well my reasons for why projectile feels more impactful and satisfying than hitscan is because its a harder thing to do so there is more sense of accomplishment, you get to hear the noise of the impact separate from the noise of the weapon shooting, and just the overall feel of getting to see the bullet travel and hit the enemy after traveling makes it have have that much more oomph to me. I understand some people dont really feel the difference, and I am also interested to hear the reasons of anyone who feels its more satisfying and impactful to use hitscan if some people do.

Widowmaker and tracer should certainly stay in the game. Because they’re both unique in their own way. Widow can only snipe, tracer is only strong in close-range. But generalist hitscans like cassidy, ashe, soldier: 76 and baptiste don’t really bring anything new to the table. Even sombra, ana and wrecking ball all have a generic gun.

So yes, some hitscans does diversify the hero pool, but I agree that there’s probably too many hitscans with similar generic guns.

Yes, OW is an FPS game that was inspired by Arena shooters which have hitscan and projectile weapons in the same game.

You are confused.

Projectiles are harder thing to do only when there is a enogh high movement speed.

Overwatch is a too much slow game to projectile need enough skill.

You must watch to fps arena to have an idea of the right movement speed.

Hitscan used to be balanced by the fact that they were much worse again shields. Almost like now that those are gone they have no countermeasures.

The only countermeasures needed in a fps multiplayer need skills are game awareness and learn the covers of the maps.

A thing rarely used in ow1 by many players, because players relayed too much on shields.

After the fail of the ow1 gameplay, now with Overwatch 2 Blizzard want players to start to relaying on their skills.

Already majority of heroes are adapt to it, with some adjustments, will be the players skills to do the differences instead who use the shields and how many shields.

This game has superintelligent monkeys and hamsters, the “realism” argument should never ever be used for balance in Overwatch.

Being harder doesn’t make something more impactful/satisfying.

For example, we could also double the movement speed of every hero, or reduce hitboxes to 10% of their current size and also make everything much harder. That doesn’t make the any of the gunplay more satisfying.

I also disagree that projectile is inherently more difficult. There are some pros and cons based on projectile sizes, travel time, and distance. Contrary to what people seem to suggest, hitscan is also not a point and click adventure game. People who say that are often the worst of the hitscan players I play against.

For me, I’m the exact opposite. To me the most satisfying thing is when I know that my mechanical skill is on point and the shot I take doesnt have some randomness/luck component if the enemy decides to move from a shot that’s otherwise taken with perfect prediction. Being able to accurately track an enemy using hitscan feels a million times better than any satisfaction I could ever get from landing bullet-like projectiles.

Pick a hitscan hero if you struggle on projectile. It is that simple. Stop trying to change everything to revolve around yourself, it will never happen. You are the only one with the influence to change yourself.

Hitscan, or hitscancer as I call it, is the root of all balance problems in Overwatch. The double shield meta came into existence to counter the ever increasing hitscan spam.

The problem is magnified twofold in OW2, and makes heroes like Junkrat and Mercy nigh unplayable. Playing against Aimbot 76 as Mercy feels just… insulting. There’s no better way to describe it. Soldier is just a big FU sign to every support.

I’m dead if I allow this spambot to merely look in my direction for 2 seconds.
