Do ranks reset?

Do they finally reset?

If not, why not?

Why aren’t there seasonal rank resets in Overwatch?
They exist in a lot of other competitive online games, and they help weed out problems like smurfs.

The arguments I usually see are pretty weak.

  • They wouldn’t make a difference.
  • Ranks don’t really matter.
  • You are your rank, no matter what.

See but those things aren’t true. When you end up in a rank (especially over multiple seasons) you develop a mentality for that rank. You are convinced that you will only ever be that rank because you have been that rank for /so long/.

If anyone can provide one extremely solid and difficult to debate point AGAINST season rank resets, I would love to hear it.

(I gotta go to work but I wanted to drop this thread for major discussion.)

Weed out smurfs? A seasonal SR reset would be the greatest gift possible for smurfs. They could climb as high as they wanted and it would only take them 10 games to derank back

How about the first 2-3 weeks of every season being completely unplayable because of all the GMs being matched with bronze players?

You are right though, it would help with the current smurf problem…By forcing everyone to effectively smurf for their first 10-20 games of a season.

Well hearing about the whole role que thing, you might just get your wish of a reset. But as discussed before in other threads a rank reset will result with the following:

  • Everyone from all ranks will be clumped together in matches

  • Solo que would be more of a fiesta than it is now until ranks are settled in

  • Higher ranks may just group together to climb back to the top (destroying everyone that isn’t higher than them on their way up)

  • Players can intentionally throw placements on their once 3000-4000 smurf down to place a lot lower than before. (I wouldn’t be surprised to see more Bronze to GM challenges)

  • With their newly placed smurf account, they can essentially boost their friends into a higher rank than they should be.

  • This essentially hurts players in the lower ranks cause I’d imagine GM+ players stomp their way up, followed by Masters, than diamond, etc… and the players at lower ranks either can’t play/win or will have to wait until their higher ranked friends can play with them (essentially giving them a boost)

  • And people saying 2-3 weeks seem generous, I would imagine 2 months before part of the players settle in their ranks. But with the rank reset, you never know if you’ll get a fair game cause that GM player could be playing on his smurf which is in silver after things have settled in.

So yeah, I agree with CoG, a seasonal reset heck even just a full rank reset is a gift to smurfs.

My belief is that when people end up in a rank over multiple season and are unable to climb, it’s that they developed bad habits that work in that current rank but can be considered throwing in higher ranks. Many people also tend to just grind matches without thinking of “what could I have done better (aside from landing more shots)?” Then there’s the whole adapting/assessing the current situation in a match but I’ll leave that for another time.

It’s that a reset is pointless…
If a player has already shown they can’t beat a given level of comp over the course of a 100+ rounds then nothing is going to change after a reset. It’s just looking to throw out 100+ rounds of data or maybe 1000+ due to multi-seasons and replace it with 10 placement matches.
Geeee I wonder what data set is more accurate?

Overwatch ladder is really no different than a hobby or rec league (bowling leagues/park&rec softball etc) and they don’t tend to reset either. Being the level/skill of players are not even by design.

There is little chance that say a 100 pin average bowler is all of sudden a 290 pin bowler after a month between random rec bowling leagues.

and then being one can do placements at any time during the season all that would happen is really high and really low players would find their water level quickly and be left alone. All the players in the average to low middle would get endless crud games due to “reset” players being dropped in all season long on the way back to really high or really low.

There will be a reset when 2/2/2 comes in.

Instead of it costing money and taking hours of leveling and then throwing smurfs can just take 2 hours to throw 10 matches to place in bronze and stomp all the way back to their rank and then rinse and repeat every season
