It makes no sense that previous season rank is considered even during placement matches!
Change this as soon as possible, please!
Background:
Due to playing solo at one of the last seasons, I dropped drastically in rank (over 1000). Now, I am stuck at low ranks:
I cannot join friends.
I cannot even join the new groups.
Even during placement matches since Overwatch considers your past season’s rank.
In addition, for solo players, just introduce solo ranked like in HotS

Hm… I don’t really play comp but… Enlighten me in why previous season shouldn’t be considered exactly?

Ya see
This won’t change anything
99% of players(excluding purposeful throwers) are about where they belong so don’t be surprised when you still get placed in the same rank

I made the mistake of playing lots of solo ranked past seasons and dropped alot (over 1000). In most of the matches, there were leavers, btw.
In such a situation, you cannot play with friends or most groups, even during placement matches since the old rank is considered. You are literally stuck at low ranks and cannot play competitive with your friends anymore. Low ranks are no fun at all. There are lots of leavers and sniper players who don’t hit their targets
. Maybe, the group system changes this a bit but it increases the waiting time even more.
I will report back as soon as I am placed this season.
This time, I only play with the new groups.
Well, I don’t think Blizzard will accept your plead once the problem wasn’t with server connectivity and bugs making you drop off a match. As you stated yourself it was partly your own mistake (though leavers isn’t your fault at all) and it wouldn’t be fair for all others who got into higher ranks during last season

Playing without friends / groups increases the probability of leavers alot.
I just kept playing solo although my rank dropped and dropped. I thought previous season rank is not consider just like at Overwatch’s early seasons.
Then, after the placement matches of the next season, I realized what had happened.
Playing low ranks is no fun at all.
As said, the group system might improve this particular situation.
This was literally never a thing except for I believe between season 1 and 2. And it was only a thing then because the ranking system was completely reworked

I played solo all of last season and didn’t drop at all. Playing solo is not why you dropped.

I do believe that the overall ranking should drop after every season, I can stress this enough since I mostly play on console, but in actuality I haven’t really played since season 2. Which during that time I was an entire noob to fps type games in general.
Hell I never played one ever to be honest, haven’t touched one single CoD game, halo etc. This was an my first foray into the gaming genre, and lets just say while I was okay during this time I was a basic noob.
So I decide, I’ll play season 11 after all these years because truthfully speaking I knew I grew overtime, mostly playing mystery heros and learning different heroes for years. However, I simply wanting to try out Sym 3.0 competitively.
I was doing great throughout my entire placements, 7 wins and 3 loses. One loss I truly to admit defeat due to how I played that one because all games can’t be shining examples of perfection. However, the other two keep trying to tell people to stay focused and I knew one game was a total loss on Junkertown, when you’re the only remotely close to the “PAYLOAD”…Jeff’s right everyone needs to get on the fracking payload LOL and that one went down hill because for that very reason.
Overall, I usually had gold medals in damage, elims, and objective kills if not silver. So I knew I was doing something right by playing Sym 3.0 during these matches, however due to my poor seasons of 1 and 2…my rank had been shafted for awhile. Which of course out of placements rank 1499…yes 1499 one shy of silver LOL
I can’t play as often daily because I’m going through some personal issues, but Im slowly climbing the ladder, and most solo q through out all my matches. Which is mostly due to the fact that mainly of my friends no longer play and I’m antisocial at heart xD
reporting back from season 11 placement: playing tank mostly:
8 wins, 2 defeats => 802 SR (from 656 SR last season)
The formula seems to be something like:
656 + (8-2) * 25 = 806 (close to 802)
Friend of mine was about 1600 SR previous season, got 5 victories and 5 defeats at placement and remained about 1600 SR. We could not play together anymore
.
Thus:
Do not consider previous season rank, please!
Actually, I don’t care about rank. I just want to be able to play with friends and without player types widely common at low level such as leavers, wannabe snipers and “single hero fans”. The new group system seems to mitigate this issue slightly but increases waiting times. Playing quickmatch is no alternative since it is overrun by strange players anyway.
But somehow competitive seems to be overrun, too: At season 11’s match no. 11, we encountered a very strange enemy team. They totally dominated us with fast characters only and let us win! They even confessed cheating.
Wishing back Overwatch 2016. They added lots of unnecessary stuff like (team) deathmatch and attracted lots of strange players. (Team) deathmatch is a great mode but not with Overwatch’s slowmo speed. If you want deathmatch, there is only Quake.
So in placements me a 4.4k player should be able to que with a 500sr player? how is that fun for anyone?

Well clearly they’re actually 4k players trapped in their rank because of teammates and you just got lucky
Yeah that makes sense. I must be really lucky though, because I was able to get my alt account from diamond to gm in one day two seasons ago
solo cue with sym…its easy to rank up quickly
Okay, okay, I got it:
Do not play Overwatch with friends or at all!

There’s QP if you want to play with friends who are too high for you.

QP is no fun anymore thanks to Overwatch’s player base nowadays. Maybe, Fortnite will clean it up
.
Friends are not too high or too good for me.
They just did not make the mistake of dropping by playing solo with lots of leavers some seasons ago (dropped from 1714 to 654).
Season 11 placement was 8 victories, 2 defeats, resulting in a rank increase from 656 to 802. By grinding with the new group system, I could at least return to former levels, now.
Actually, why are there placement matches (after being placed once) at all?
It makes no sense, if previous season’s rank is considered as the base anyway.
I wholeheartedly agree that the previous seasons should not account. What’s the point of calling it a different season, if everything carries over?! It seems I will never get out of bronze because of something that happened in Season 2. And for the people who say QP is always an option, QP and competitive have different rules… There’s no sense of achievement or self-improvement because your level increases no matter what. Season 11 officially killed competitive for me, and maybe even the rest of the game…
Otherwise the alternative is that after choosing the option, it would be like when we start a new account, we must mount x level in quick play to judge our level (which will also reset) and during x level, we can not go to ranked
