Making the surface area you’re using your mouse on more consistent makes your aim more consistent as it gives you more control.
Well no but it’s recommended to have one because:
You will not wear out the rubber layers under the mouse which can lead to some funky friction.
You will have more consistency. Depending on the table’s surface it can make your mouse move in a weird way plus the surface could cause some drag while a mouse pad’s surface is smooth as silk and does not cause any weird mouse movements on screen (if the surface is not shiny and bumpy your mouse will move very smoothly).
So if you want to get better at aiming it is best to decrease the amount of factors that hinder your progress.
use track ball mouse the one with the ball on top of the mouse it works the best for everything

I use an optical mouse but instead of using it like a low tier user I turn it upside down and use my thumb to guide it, mid air.

doesnt matter if your mouse is any good.
as long as your desk isnt shiny (metal) or transparent (glass) you are fine
i play on dance dance foot pad to play this game and i do a back flip to shoot pharahs move back shot!

It’s night and day for me. I have a mousepad that almost takes up my whole desk and it is so helpful for me.
I can’t imagine not using a mousepad
But if you didn’t use a mousepad, wouldn’t you be able to use the whole desk? 
Seriously though, a big ol’ mousepad is awesome. I recently got one that is wide enough for my keyboard to sit on as well, and it’s quite nice. I think I want an even bigger one, though…

Of course, lol, but it wouldn’t feel as good to use.
Sarcasm aside, I love that my keyboard fits on the pad.
However, I’ve actually started using an Xbox controller for movement (left hand) and mouse for aiming (right hand) so I can get rid of the keyboard entirely while playing. It gives SO MUCH more freedom with aiming it is insane.
Try it if you can. I can’t recommend it enough.

That sounds insane. You use it so you can move the keyboard out of the way? I mean… I’ve seen people play Brigitte with a pizza shield and a baguette flail, but this sounds even crazier.

Just buy a huge sheet of mouse pad material and cut it to fit your whole desk 4head

It’s great for Lucio. My wallriding has gotten several times better and more consistent. And yeah, having that huge mouspad only for your mouse is liberating.
