Discrimination in OW šŸ”ˆ Why I use a voice changer

The other day I was just playing some overwatch, not really looking to make friends, but this one guy was in a game with me wanted to group up (guess he liked my healing), but my comms were glitching (does that ever happen to yall? :grimacing: Where you can’t properly group in the same voice channel?) and so i figured i’d restart. Well, after restarting and regrouping, i forgot to re-launch my modifier, and he heard my naturally-given voice, realizing my gender and his confusion was seemingly immense. Why wouldn’t I want to be a girl on the internet? Oh boy…

I use a voice changer in my games to make my voice sound ā€œdeepā€ and ā€œmaleā€, and that’s because my life in overwatch is easier that way..

It’s not Blizzard’s fault, but the community fostered in this game can be very toxic and the best way I can fight back is to relinquish my femininity and gender for sake of blending in. No one has EVER singled me out on anything other than game-related issues in comms when I use my voice changer . But back when i didn’t use one, I had to deal with people who think my gender is the reason I play support, am in a particular rank, or an invite to add me and DM me about non-overwatch-related stuff.

Unless you like that attention, I suggest y’all join me. With deception, I have successfully found equality… because in this day and age, that’s the only way I’m going to experience that on overwatch.

Edit: Thanks for 100 likes, I love y’all!

Disappointing that you feel you have to do this.

I wish they had voice changers making everyone sound like the hero they were playing. I might actually turn comms on for that.

I though about doing that too.
Kinda sick of the ā€œgamer girls are so badā€ and also the ā€œhey girl, look at me, i’m so cool, wanna date me?ā€ but I was too lazy and never try a voice changer.

It’s really lame to being blame on our gender but I have talked with some male on the internet and they were like ā€œit’s interesting to play with girls, they don’t play like usā€ā€¦ but we do ._.

I’m happy that there’s a solution, but disappointed it’s a bandaid solution that doesn’t get to or punish the root of the problem. If I wasn’t so inured to insults, I’d probably roll with a voice changer too. Though I get mistaken for a prepubescent boy sometimes so I guess it’s not necessary

My voice is male. I was thinking it would be fun to use a voice changer to make my voice sound like a munchkin. Wait that would be too annoying…I would have so much fun speaking in a munchkin voice I would probably be muted a lot .

I’m happy for every woman that plays FPS shooters. Why should it be a problem? I met alot of female OW players while playing and this never caused any confusion, trouble or negative behaviour in chat/voice chat. No clue if this is server relevant (EU here). But the cliche that male players have problems when a female player shows up is hopefuly only a cliche.

One of my favs is when your team ignores your calls, but when a guy on the team repeats them then everyone goes for it.

ā€˜ā€˜We have to jump that Ashe on the high ground’’
-yep.
no one goes on the ashe and she free shoots us to death.
my Lucio repeats what I said ā€˜ā€˜We have to jump ashe’’
Everyone does it.

As for the OP, any recomendations on voice changers?
Never used one, but am curious now.

i play on eu and its not just a cliche. It does follow the same rules basically as IRL where if youre grouped with a guy the issues become extremely rare. Its really not realistic to compare your experience of playing grouped with girls and women playing alone in solo que. Just keep that in mind.

It’s because you’re only seeing a slice of a female players’ game experience. You (this is a general you) don’t see the comms of 100% of the female players’ games. People like to go ā€œI don’t see it when I match with a girl so it doesn’t existā€ but like… It do. I don’t think it’s mega common or maybe I don’t experience it as much because of my hero selection/voice, but like… It’s just a global thing

Oh my god even my friends do this. Even if we’re playing freaking heroes of the storm and I’m the one with the most hours logged and the most gamesense. Do the objective!!! Aaaa

Maybe I should change my voice to a girl then because I had a fair share of toxic female players in my games.

Do you need a hug you #^%#^* son of a @!$%#?

I disagree. There should be only one shot caller per team (doesn’t always work that way) It could be that the shot caller made some good calls and ā€œearnedā€ the trust of the team. Maybe you only made your ā€œfirstā€ call and it happened to be right  Keep up the good shot calling! You may be recognized and they will trust you.

I’ve never seen toxic female players go for sex based insults but ok like what do they say?

Stats don’t lie. Heavy majority of all female players I’ve seen play support. I’m not going to generalize and say it’s all they do, though.

I’ve seen female players play other roles and be trash at it, and I’ve seen them play other roles and be absolutely amazing at it, just like any male.

Best Widow I’ve ever matched with was female. One of the best D.va’s too.

The only anti female voice chat I have ever witnessed was literally started by the girl in the group. She was pissed that she was outperforming someone in game (this was awhile ago so I have no clue of roles or characters) but she started the whole ā€œyour playing so bad your doing worse than a GIRLā€
I’m sure this is super uncommon. But than again, that’s the ONLY experience I have had like that in the 3 years this game has been around.

What platform do you play on? Is it more common on PC of on consoles?

Lol I see it alot in my rank. Females are about the most toxic players. Try saying something to them their go to’s are mentioning your d size.

Oh, makes sense I guess idk I’d take that over being called the C word but both are reprehensible

It may just be because a lot of them are used to being defensive, but yeah. I’ve met some SUPER toxic females that just completely go off at nothing and need to be muted.
