Disconnections during the start of the game

Overwatch is the ONLY game I get disconnected from. I can play any other game all day and not get DC. The fact that blizzard thinks its a good idea to only give someone 10 seconds to get back into a game when its just started, is mind blowing. I’ve lost over a 1000 points in competitive rating (throughout all seasons) to this idiocy. WHY NOT GIVE SOMEONE 25 OR 30 SECONDS TO LOG BACK IN!!! Do you just want to screw people over or something? I have even DISABLED my authenticator to lower the amount of time it takes for me to log in, and considering about changing my password to something easier. This is an easy fix, but you guys won’t do it… I’ve made this post before, and still 10 seconds to log in. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
PS. I did just get dc and lost rating back into plat… so I’m pissed. You will hear from me at blizzcon if I don’t see this simple and obvious change lol.

Rejoining a game is only possible during certain phases of the game. If you leave a game either during the pre-game or during the first minute of the game, the game will automatically cancel (remember the 10 second rule does not apply to the leaver, but as a warning to other players that the match will cancel). You can rejoin the match during the initial hero selection screen if you are lucky enough to quickly reconnect though.

Otherwise, you can only rejoin any-time after one-minute of match time has passed up until the match completes. However you only have two minutes to do so without penalty. If you rejoin a match after two-minutes, you will still automatically be marked with a loss an be penalized with a -50 SR cut and a ten-minute suspension. This rule ensures that no one can abusive the leaver system by attempting to return to a match after deliberately leaving in order to avoid such penalties. Furthermore leaving three or more times in a single match will result in an automatic penalty. If you fail to return to a match by the time it ends normally (regardless of match result) you will be penalized.

Unfortunately all disconnections and game crashes counts as leaving the match and will be penalized appropriately. The game server has no way to discern a legitimate disconnection or game crash from one that is forcefully caused by a dishonest player to bypass leaver penalties. You can learn about this policy here:

During a disconnection. it is actually easier and faster to completely close the game client and relaunch from the Battle.net app launcher. No authenticator check or password entry will be needed.

If you are disconnecting frequently, PLEASE stop playing Competitive and lets work to isolate the cause of your disconnections. First please make sure your equipment is checked and good to go:

Of course, there is a possibility that you may have a problem between you and the game server and to locate such a problem you need to run a connection test like a WinMTR test.

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR from http://winmtr.net/download-winmtr/ (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West -
  • US Central -
  • Brazil -
  • Europe -

  • Korea -
  • Taiwan -

I have a problem with the Voice Chat so I require the use of VPN, sometimes I forgot to turn it on or it disconnect and reconnects by itself. The 10 secs to rejoin the game is sure not enough for that. Kindly add the timer to like 1 min or something or fix your Voice chat problems. Your system is causing people to rage even more after losing a match.
