Disable text chat on console

The single greatest decision that could be made to positively impact this game and its player base would be to remove text chat. We didn’t have it for years on console, and I couldn’t understand why the forums talked so much about toxicity, but now it’s clear. It’s crazy how toxicity skyrocketed after it was added to console. The game used to be a much happier place.

Text chat is almost exclusively used for negativity. Immediately at the end of a match, it’s guaranteed that someone will blame someone else, trash talk, or just generally be a terrible person in chat. And since there’s such a small window of post-match time, it all gets slung out at once and everyone is trying to have the last word. It’s completely thoughtless, selfish negativity that leaves stains on otherwise good matches, and I don’t understand why it’s facilitated by the game. Why give people that tool? There’s zero reason to be able to talk to the enemy team. Not that team chat is any less awful.

Leaving chat myself isn’t even helpful, because it doesn’t stop everyone else from standing around rage typing, which takes forever with a controller, by the way. The existence of the capability absolutely, unequivocally has a negative impact on the game.

How many other PvP games are there where you can type to the whole lobby? Imagine if Horde could talk to Alliance. It’d be all the same stuff you see in OW chat, but it’s only allowed in OW for some reason, which is ironic considering the theme of the game.

Please take text chat back out of console at least. It’s routinely ruining otherwise fun nights with my friends. We come away from losses feeling mad at attacks from our teammates moreso than having lost the match. It’s not the words. Their words mean nothing. It’s the audacity and ironic lack of self awareness that bothers me the most.

You can disable it for yourself. No need to imposing that to everyone cause you can’t handle a “buh buh”

Way to demonstrate not reading the post. Disabling it for myself doesn’t stop me from losing a whole point while my Genji types rage paragraphs blaming everyone else. He’s only doing it because he can, and it shouldn’t be an option. Not sure why I thought the same people who only know how to spell “L tank diff” would be able to read a whole paragraph, I guess.

Vool you dont decide that

But if I could, the game would improve 1000% overnight.

You can turn it off entirely though. You dont have to do it every game.

I understand that, but it needs to be off for my teammates, too, or it does me no good. I don’t need them arguing between rounds and getting tilted while I wait for them to stop typing and leave spawn.

They can turn it off too. So in your head if blizzard removes text chat everyone plays merrily and works together, is that it?

I think you’ll find that isn’t the case, but hell i don’t care if blizzard wants to remove it, I’ve had it off for most of ow2 anyway

I know for certain it’s the case, because it’s exactly how the game worked on console for years. We didn’t have text chat until crossplay was enabled. People worked better together when they couldn’t directly flame each other.

and I remember people stopping to load the ps or xbox menu, search for your id, find you, add friend on psn or live, or peck out a msg with controller and send, which all took significantly longer.

But you do tend to have a very unique view of how things “are”

They can’t publicly flame people by direct messaging one person, so that’s a much less attractive, rarely used option. Their whole point is to show everyone how the loss isn’t their fault.

The only valid argument for not disabling would be if it wasn’t used for negativity 99.999% of the time, but I think we’ll find nobody taking that side since we all know it’s true.

It was more or less the best decision I ever made regarding Overwatch. I still have chat enabled on my alternative account (totally not to read reactions as I do my experiments) and it always reminds me to never, ever, under any circumstances, return to chat. The game is a lot better when you do not realize you are playing with people who never got punched in the face.

Ha ha ha… I know, right? My Sistah Spice and I joke about how the AI is malfunctioning.

Finally! All of these weirdos genuinely believe they are hard and hurting our feelings. That’s not what offends me. I am sad that you even exist.

Def my first thought when people would say something about feet pics or they’re throwing.

Remove it so my teammates don’t waste their time trying to type crap with a controller when we’re losing. Like use your mic if you have something to say it’s not that hard.

No it would not improve

Nah, he’s more doing it because he is a Genji main. He wouldn’t get the point regardless.

Stopping text chat wouldn’t stop them from tilting and not leaving spawn :face_with_raised_eyebrow: they would still do it by just being afk and not contributing anything, at least flaming the enemy could also tilt them and cause them to play worse.

Not like I’m defending toxic scum, just pointing out if toxic scum want to be toxic they would find other ways to do it.

You realize you just can do it yourself right?

Not everyone on your team is as over-sensitive as you are. Or why not play something more kid-friendly, like Plants vs Zombies?

Yes, they are. They are MORE sensitive because they believe throwing the game to use the most generic insults known to man is somehow not obnoxious. And then they cry when they get suspended despite not being “as bad as a racist (lol?)” when in reality most of the reports are likely from when they decided to stand still for 15 seconds to type “ur trash.”

Seems easier for you to buy a $300 pc and stop playing console games.
