Director’s Take - Stadium’s First Week

There are so many things wrong with Stadium.

  1. 6v6: Overwatch NEEDS to just return to 6v6. Stop trying to make 5v5 work. Its awful. (side note: 6v6 needs to add role queue outside of Stadium).

  1. Hero Switching: Counter picking has been core to Overwatch since day 1. Being locked in on one hero while you are being countered is not a good time. The only way locking heroes in works, is if both teams vote on who to play and teams are 100% mirrored and that isn’t fun either. Overwatch is NOT a MOBA and trying to force you to counter pick by buying items doesn’t work when none of the items aren’t useful enough.

  1. Best of 5: 7 rounds is insane. Especially with how much time you spend looking at menus in this mode instead of playing. This needs to be reduced to best of 5 round. First to win 3 rounds.

  1. Pacing: Because they have a best of 7 rounds, they wanted to speed everything up. Maps are shorter with faster engagements and faster capture points, but with how fast you die this hardly leaves any time to make a comeback because respawns are so long. I understand they wanted to make something feel different than the other modes, but its not as fun this way. Change capture points and progress back to normal values.

  1. Reduce menu times: Ironically they wanted to created a faster feeling game mode and I spend more time looking at menus and doing math than actually playing the game. Its awful. We don’t need that much time to pick heroes. Part of why they increased hero selection time probably is because you can’t change later…you wont need that if you can just change heroes! Also spending an hour trying to pick items and powers is annoying. We don’t want to stare at menu screens, we want to play the match. It should only take 30 seconds max to pick a hero and your powers at the start, then 15 seconds max every round after that!

  1. Remove currency and bounties: All this does is create balance issues and allows one team to fall behind. Even with the catch up mechanic, it still doesn’t make sense for how each hero is rewarded the cash. All this does is add complexity to an already convoluted mode. And you DONT NEED it because:

  1. Remove ALL ITEMS: Powers are great. Items are not. Items end up creating confusing gameplay moments where one second Genji is normal health, and then the next round he has extra movement speed and armor. Then you have to spend even more time looking at menus to see what people are buying and building so you can try to counter build with other items that don’t even really work anyway because once you’ve lost a round, you end up spending more cash trying to get items that help you survive. Its just becomes a big pile of garbage.

  1. PERKS!: PERKS were received well by the community. People like them. Why go out of your way to create all the ITEMS that clearly work better for a PvE mode. Stadium should have double downed off the success of the perk System. This would also help cut down on menu times as well and eliminate the unpredictability of encounters and TTK. Also PERKS DONT COST MONEY! Items should be reworked into sets of new perks to pick at the start of every round, increasing in power, with strongest perks at the end round. You could take it one step further and allow the player to pick between categories of perks. For example: round 2 starts and the armory asks “Do you want Survival, Ability or Weapon perks?” Make your choice, then you’re presented with a choice of 2 perks! Every game of stadium would feel different because a player could pick 1 of every perk or 4 rounds of weapon perks if they wanted.

Round 1: Pick your Power and BOTH of the standard PERKS that are already built into your hero at the start
Round 2: Pick your Power and 1 NEW SET of PERKS (Survival)
Round 3: Pick your Power and 1 NEW SET of PERKS (Ability)
Round 4: Pick your Power and 1 NEW SET of PERKS (Weapon)
Round 5: Pick your 1 NEW SET of PERKS (strongest perk choices)

Also, if you decide you need to switch heroes, you can switch at any time. You would be able to instantly pick your 2 base perks, but powers and additional perks would only be selected at the start of the next round.

Perks also creates easier ways to balance heroes and allows new heroes to be added to stadium faster. Not to mention, it would be a good way to get data on new perks that could be tested and changed into the heroes base kit for future balance patches for QP and Comp.

  1. Camera: 3rd person is cool, but needs some work. 1st person should be the default choice, not 3rd. And if people want to use 3rd person, there should be more options for placement of camera because some heroes still take up too much space and make it really hard to see. Also, bring this option into the base game. Allow players to use 3rd person in every mode. Tanks especially feel better with 3rd person.

This mod is really well thought out, but it’s been implemented somewhat incorrectly. First of all, different animations should have been used for the third-person perspective. For example, Genji’s basic melee attack is barely noticeable in TP. Most of the animations used in FP aren’t suitable for TP completely separate animations that are more appropriate for TP should have been created.

Also, the changes made in Season 9 and role passives shouldn’t be present in this mod. Character stats also shouldn’t be the same as in 5v5. Additionally, this mod would have been more suitable as a 6v6 mode, because 6v6 character stats are much better than those in 5v5.

In short, the balancing and stats in this mod shouldn’t be the same as in the other core game modes. If they absolutely have to be, then they should be based on the 6v6 stats. Please get rid of the ridiculous changes introduced in S9 and the role passives.

Stadium is pointless if the entire roster is not available. Just horribly imbalanced.

Good to see framerate being mentioned on older systems. But what about Aim Assist just not being in Stadium for Console?

Most forgetable Game mode you’ve ever created. No way this is permanent. Feels like a one season thing

With the caveat that I’m going off of other people’s word here: I think the problem isn’t just the number of leavers anyway, but (if I’ve got this right) that the winning team doesn’t get a victory if absolutely everyone on the other side quits.

There could be a 1% leaver rate, but if the consequences feel awful then it’s not really any consolation that it’s a fairly rare occurance. Just… fix it. If the other team peaces out in actual Comp, then the winning team gets a win.

Just for conversation’s sake, I’d guess silver and lower.

I got dropped down to silver in the other game thanks to their “wonderful” start-of-season nine rank demotion system, and leavers are a miserable fact of life. It’s probably the same over here.

This post captures everything that is wrong with Stadium and Overwatch as a whole.

  • 6v6 is the way to move forward. Having one Übertank has created an unresolvable and fundamental gameplay problem; it makes for an unbalanced team composition. This problem is exacerbated in Stadium where you can’t switch to counter in hope of alleviating some of the inherent 5v5 issue. Blizzard state that more people play 5v5 than 6v6, hence not willing to make 6v6 the default way to play Overwatch. However, they fail to mention Free-to-play players are the majority and they don’t have any familiarity with 6v6. In addition, 6v6 is introduced in a half-baked Open Queue state which is not the optimal way to play 6v6. The developers obsess way too much over queue times and this is leading to unhealthy gameplay changes that jeopardise the game itself fundamentally.
  • Stadium is too long, too much looking at screens, ‘theory crafting’ etc. The playing part is rather short in comparison and most games end up in a stomp. Remove items and menus. Make Stadium 6v6 with perks and abilities. Done.

Hi devs! I don’t normally come to post here, but I enjoyed the new mode a lot and have a few asks.

  1. Can I please have my third person shoulder switch button and regular overwatch perk button be the same button? I’d like for both buttons to be bound to left alt, but it wont let me, even though perks are disabled in stadium.

  2. I’m glad you are going to be enabling cross play in this game, but I don’t like the idea of splitting the player base into qp and comp for this mode. It’s supposed to be more casual competitive environment, correct? Casual at lower ranks, competitive at higher ranks. Maybe find a way for PC players to play with console players but only up to a certain rank? I’m not sure what the solution is to be honest, but I’d like the player base to stay together instead of splitting queues.

Also, it kind of sucks that you’re aiming from mid-season 17 with cross play. I feel like new people that are coming to Overwatch for the first time to play this mode with their friends are going to be real turned off if they can’t play with their friends on console or PC.

  1. Could you make it easier for me to see my own build on the fly? It’s hard for me to remember what all my powers and items do. Once the round starts, I have to press tab, then left click, and then middle click to hover over each item, and it’s just a lot of button pressing when I just wanted to quick check what my third power does again

  2. The stadium announcer cuts his own lines off in between rounds on occasion. It breaks immersion for me.

  3. Nerf Cass lol

Thanks for such a banger mode!

They do. You get an income boost when you’re behind. If you can’t keep up, even with a boost, then gg.

Another trash experience thanks to your trash matchmaker.

Until you fix the matchmaker that penalizes good players by putting literal deadweight on our teams for doing well, every single comp mode is tainted. It doesn’t matter what new modes you create. The core issue is still there.

Crazy how they dont seem to think the uptake of leavers in this mode is an issue lol

Just brush it off i guess. Leaver in every 2 games at least

When you have a mode that lasts 2x as much as a standard match, leavers are 2x as destructive and should be punished 2x the amount as a standard comp match.

Stadium and comp matches should not be treated equally. Stadium requires more investment from every player so a leaver should be punished more in relation to that. Giving them a 10 min penalty for leaving a 30 min stadium match is not fair punishment

I didn’t think leavers were a problem until the last few days, and ESPECIALLY today. Nearly every single match I’ve played in today has had at least 2 or 3 leavers. It makes the mode unplayable, considering the tournament style, and having to stay in the rounds afterwards, for however more rounds are left, down a team member with the other side gunning for you, is rage inducing.

The longet streak of leavers I’ve had today is 4 games in a row.

I don’t even know where it’s come from. I haven’t had any leavers and then today it’s just been crazy.

It’s SUCH a good mode, but the leavers are leaving a bad taste. I don’t even know what would fix it, but my goodness, it’s been infuriating.

So I’m seeing a lot of talk about levers. That’s another reason to not put this game into quick play. You need to have strict leaver penalties for a mode like this. Putting this mode into quick play would give leavers more leniency to ruin matches.

Yes, like 1 leave and perma banned from game, Accounts are free to make so no harm right?

Make it 3 out of 5.

4 out of 7 takes too long.

I remember when they said we couldn’t have 6v6 come back because it would split the player base to much. Now their talking about a ranked, and an unranked mode for stadium.

I’ll save you the trouble. Stadium should be 100% unranked. Then if you have enough people interested in the mode, and then if enough of them start asking for a ranked version, that’s when you should consider splitting the mode.
