Director’s Take – Reflecting on the future of Overwatch 2

if thats is the philosophy thatbyou want to go in, who initially started this big impossible dream? Jeff

the sad thing is, you’re probably right on this. such a shame that they choose to try to take the easy way out

It mustn’t have been easy to write all of this considering how vulnerable of a position this is currently, something that might’ve been pushed into reality with the current circumstances, but that also existed within the team’s inner web. It is nice to actually know what was even a surface take on the whole ordeal, even though it does suck. But as much as it sucks for us, it does not suck any less for them either since it is something they’ve spent half a decade trying to breathe life into

Personally I’m not so much annoyed about the hero story mode being benched, but rather the fall that came as a price for it. OW2 has a better engine and a scoreboard, but… everything else is worse than what it was in OW1. That is the part that stings me personally the most about all of this. This was supposed to be the high payout for enduring this fiesta, but in the end the cost is all we got for it. Had the cost not been such a considerable one, I don’t think the community would be so pissed about it either

It’s not “dead” as in no one plays it, but the OW I knew and the OW2 I was promised are both “dead” as in they are gone and will never come back.

And? That doesnt change the fact that the team left behind after he left failed, also if im not mistaken Aaron himself was part of the team at that time. Bad leadership all around with or without Jeff.

Terrible take by a terrible game director. I’ve literally been waiting since OW2’s launch for PvE to be added to finally play it - I think I’ve logged in like 3 times since it launched to play during a holiday or for a skin or whatever, but haven’t touched the game otherwise, as I’ve just been waiting for the “full” game to be released, finally - and now you’ve said you’re never going to add it?

There was already massive backlash when you guys said you were going to launch the game without PvE in it, but that it was coming really soon and the game needed to go live in the interim, in it’s unfinished state. Now you’re saying you’ve cancelled it outright, and are surprised that the players are upset? Take a hint.

I’ll likely never play the game again now, unless my GF begs me to play with her. And you can be sure as hell I won’t be spending a cent more than I already have on anything to do with this game, because I refuse to support such scummy practices.

Let’s look again at what you have given us over the years:
2017- Upraising, 8 new maps, Orisa, Doomfist and Moira
2018- Retribution, 5 new maps, Brigitte, Wrecking ball and Ashe
2019- Storm Rising, 2 new maps, Baptiste and Sigma
2020- 0 new maps but you released the workshop and Echo
2021- 2 new maps
2022- (Overwatch 2 launched) 6 new maps, 1 more in December, Soujourn, Junker Queen and Kiriko.
2023- 1 new map (2 if we count talantis) Ramattra and Lifeweaver.
The point is, since 2019 you have decreased the number of new things introduced to the game, I know that the above is not the only thing you have done but it is certainly the most significant.
Overwatch 2 launched with so many things but only because you keep it all To make it look shocking, but you give us that many things back in 2017 and 2018.
The 2 in the name is because of the PvE Hero missions, if they’re not, it’s the same game. We already have Archives missions in Overwatch 1. The veterans of OW are the ones that lose because we no longer have free cosmetics, we wait years for nothing and yet we are the ones who are still here. Truly disappointing

This is a pathetic excuse of an apology. I apologize but what even is the point of overwatch 2 being a thing? it should just be called overwatch since you got rid of the main purpose of this game you promised for years and just threw it all away into the garbage. I have lost all hope for this game. You want to keep this game alive? keep your promises for once.

So… just so I have this right; OW1 had to go through the content drought that slowly killed it because you needed people to work on all the Hero Mission stuff in OW2, which initially was supposed to be focused on the PvE while OW1 stayed PvP focused. Then at some point, unsure when since OW1 was still running until last year when OW2 came out, you figured that the live service model of OW2 wasn’t doing well enough and the only way to fix that was to kill off Hero Missions, which you heavily advertised and pushed and promoted btw.

Basically, my question now is… what was all of this for? Why did OW1 have to die for you to do basically nothing other than implement a “give us money or you won’t get 1/2 of the new content” battlepass?

This has been a massive nothingburger of an apology. Keep your nonsensical “oh woe is me” rhetoric to yourself. You didn’t even say why it took you months into OW2 to tell the people now that one of the biggest features you promised would no longer be implemented.

I think the main issue here for me is how you (I’m sure) accidentally explained how you had known that PVE was (mostly) cancelled and yet you lied about it so people would preorder the game and buy battle passes and continue to buy skins for as long as possible before delivering the bad news. It’s a good business decision, and a sh**y human decision. I already stopped playing because I’m not happy with the changes made and the insane greed of the battle pass and skin store. ($23 for a skin?!). It’s just showing your true colors. Now we just have a nerfed 5v5 version of the game that’s employing such hard fomo to get everyones hard earned money for these crappy battle passes and overpriced skins. Putting new heroes in the battle pass (pay wall) was definitely the final straw.

Funny thing is I was ready to pay $60-$70 for the full version of the pve you guys promised but you’ll never see another dime from me again for Overwatch. It’s such a shame. I put in so many hours into overwatch 1. It’s so disappointing.

This is really well written and sums it up perfectly.

That’s… not shilling dude.

i hate how this has become such a buzzword

so we lost too many features, for this undercooked game?

Lootboxes, whilst gambling and predatory, are at least better than what we have now.

PvE was the sole reason for this reboot, and you had 4 years to polish and develop this. What have you been doing?

Team 4 should have been disbanded to other teams after Titans mismanagement but we live in a weird timeline

I still think its the corporate bastards’ fault for pulling your resources and people and not letting you tell people until the game had already launched

Spin spin spin, blah blah blah, deflect this, excuse that. No one really cares about your phony garbage propagandist opinion of this disaster, but the problem is that Blizzard doesn’t really seem to care all that much what the FANS’ opinion might be. Blizzard clearly thinks of their fanbase just as selfishly and disdainfully as WotC did, and hopefully they have the same terrible reckoning coming. Also, it is insane to me that you continue to defend the timing of this announcement when YOU YOURSELF said in the GameSpot interview that this decision was actually made over 1.5 years ago. Lies, lies, and more lies.

I know there are good, hardworking, passionate people at Blizzard who hate this just as much as I do, and I am sorry that they are getting caught up in this whirlwind of negativity and anger, but most of these reactions are 100% justified and everyone at Activision/Blizzard who had anything to do with this immoral decision and unrepairable breach of trust deserves everything that’s been said about them and then some.

The Overwatch 2 is the same game but they had a way of getting rid of the loot box system and implementing a battlepass/insane skin store. That’s all the OW2 is. Otherwise it’s a worse version of 1.
