Director’s Take – Looking Beyond Overwatch 2: Invasion

“If we can’t turn back the clock, then what can we do?”

What does this even mean? what can you do? Admit you, your entire team, and Blizzard as a whole was wrong. Rethink the salaries of the higher ups like Bobby, and use the extra funds from those cut salaries to support the game and its devs to deliver the PVE experience that you originally promised.

His primary weapon is already solid. Its just that his kit sucks. The hinder nade is unreliable on high mobility. Roll is not the most impactful movement ever. Ult is unreliable. Every dps that doesn’t have solid, general, reliable value from their kit ends up with a low WR, even if their primary weapon is amazing.

I had two consecutive placement matches as Flashpoint, day one of the season.

typical gold take L.

Take away china and you’d still have a 40k review bomb (more now? I haven’t been looking)….its just as bad without china

The ratio is the same, no matter where you look.

It’s not only China. It’s worldwide. Every country. Every language.

The exact same ratio.

You said it yourself, it’s a review bomb. Most of those are from people just doing it for fun.

I’m sure it’s all ignorable then and not rooted in truth

I literally replied to this already

If 2/3 or more are supposedly from China then it probably is less about fun and more about being bitter that they lost access to their account, which is a reasonable thing to be upset about. However because that would not work well as a review line they use other statements instead.

I am sympathetic to the idea that losing access to your account is terrible, and can cause players to be bitter, but it still highlights how you can throw out large segments of the feedback and suddenly now you have to figure out what % of the reviews are real and which are those or which are memers or which are TF2 fans still bitter about TF2.

Typical troll post…

While the segment mentions a lot of specifics for the “review bombs”, it doesn’t actually promise improvement.

New maps, new heroes, and game modes were a permanent promise made in Overwatch 1, so this is nothing new but instead, a golden rule that should always be enforced. Especially with the self-inflicted curse of the free-to-play format.

The PVE being canceled is the worst part of it all for many players, while regrettable I don’t care much about that. What matter is the greedy way you sold it by forcing the few players that do want to play them, to buy 1000 Overwatch coins in the bundle for 15€ instead of selling the missions for the normal 5€.

The mythic skins keep getting fewer features since the last season and skin customization is lacking. Ana’s skin is the first mythic to have truly decent color swatches imo. Customization options for mythic skins should be changed toward piece-by-piece color customization for each mythic skin component. I.e. Genji’s skin has 2 color swatches with different greens for his hair alone and the rest is lacking in coloring. The same goes for Kiriko and JQs skins.
Added to that the YouTuber who made custom reload animations for the skins, how is it possible a whole art team couldn’t do that?
Battle Passes also lack in themed skins! This recent one has 3 themed skins including the Ana mythic itself! What kind of logic is that? Greed, nothing more, nothing less.

The game lore should be made publicly for all Overwatch players without a paywall for cutscenes of sorts. We have been waiting for story stuff since release and now it’s hidden behind more paywalls?

Balance-wise, the game is filled with problems. The way tanks are a multi-role thing is a problem. Tanks do as much damage as DPS heroes, with 3 times their health and some include massive mobility (D.Va, Doomfist, Reinhardt) or block/armor (Orisa, Ramattra, Doomfist) options. When focusing healing on those, they then become unkillable while healing can be switched towards the other supp or dps whenever needed, due to there being one less tank needing heals. Supports have been too significant for too long. Too much healing, too many escapes being added without requiring any amount of skill, too much damage. Ana’s sleep dart hitbox size is too big, invulnerability on Kiriko and Baptiste’s abilities should never have been implemented, Moira was a mistake, and Liveweaver’s overheal shield shouldn’t be a thing combined with Brig. DPS so far has the snipers being the talking point while the balance of all others is garbage as well. Some do better than others and then there are useless ones that aren’t even being looked at or have been uttterly destroyed by wrong nerfs to certain parts of the heroes kits.

The monetization system has made the game more greedy as a whole. Nothing forced a player to pay money for lootboxes, they were easily grindable as you got 1 per level up which was really easy and it gave you a shot at 4 customizations per box or duplication currency which in turn could be used to buy hero skins as well, even new event ones. While it was a gacha mechanic, it was one of the most forgiving and easy to grind systems in the industry. One that should have been more closely monitored by parents perhaps and the same goes for marketing rules in terms of youtube rules for youths and gambling. But it was fair for everyone. Even then, some skins were never 20€ while they were legendaries.
Nowadays new legendary skins re-use assets from other skins. Notable in the Genji Knight skin which uses recycled shurikens from the Nomad skins. And this same shuriken has been used in multiple skins now.

We made big additions to the Core PvP game and other features, a new Battle Pass, and a Null Sector theme that we received great feedback early on.

From who? When? Ana Mythic skin is the worst mythic skin ever released.

We’ve heard from many of our core players that the game is in the best state it’s ever been

Core players? You mean streamers that make OW2 content and money off your game? Yeah…Very objective group of people for sure that you should continue listen to…

Our balance goal for the release of Illari was to make sure that she felt strong (but not overpowered!) at launch.

Why are you nerfing her then?

We also released a new game mode, Flashpoint, with two unique maps this season. While there’s been a lot of talk about Illari and other parts of Overwatch 2: Invasion, we’re seeing lower conversation around this mode.

Lower conversation? There’s a lot of talk about the new “walking simulator”…and a lot of negativity around it. Enabling it in comp is just another reason to stop playing it.

These missions on Legendary are hard. Super hard. Most people can’t complete them at this difficulty, and those that did had to devise custom strategies and team comps to get past the hardest encounters.

MOST people won’t even attempt it on Legendary difficulty. Any other difficulty is 1-2 hour content for half of which you’re asking $15…

We also launched on Steam last week, and, although being review-bombed isn’t a fun experience

Please research what review bombing is…While there are SOME meme reviews…a lot of them are in-depth and pointing out all the negatives. But please continue pretending you’ve made a great game.

If we can’t turn back the clock, then what can we do? We can keep adding to and improving Overwatch 2. That is how we move forward. This means more maps, heroes, game modes, missions, stories, events, cool cosmetics, and features - an ever-expanding, evolving, and improving game. This is the future of Overwatch.

If that’s the future then we should be really worried because we’ve seen your “improvements” for the past 5 seasons…

Including terrible balance changes, mediocre game modes (with mischief being the only exception), overpriced skins, lazy recolors, re-using old skins, zero incentive to play your game, terrible free Battle Pass and mediocre paid one, both flooded with crap like charms, mediocre Voice Lines and victory poses, etc.

Jump in–there’s more to come!

Yeah, yeah…“In the future”, “more to come”, “soon”, “on the horizon”…you made those terms absolutely meaningless, don’t bother.

As after each Director’s Take, my question still remains the same - when are you resigning?

As for “review bombing” - if you show your playerbase ZERO RESPECT, don’t expect anything better than this.

It’s as tone deaf as ever. Sure people are angry at the full PvE being cancelled, but the real salt in the wound is charging for what’s effectively just a reskin of archives. The bonus cutscenes were on youtube within an hour so gameplay is the only thing people are paying for, and it is just glorified archives.

On top of that, where is everyone? I spent an hour trying to get into games and it was just giving me bots over and over. Luckily, I managed to get a refund, because as a masters player those bots were making even the easy mode a struggle.

Also, flashpoint. It’s fun, sure, certain comps are VERY strong for it. But the whole thing about when to add it to comp when this was posted AFTER it was added to comp??

It was a lot of content this patch and most of it mostly works as intended. But at the end of the day blizzard continues to ignore what the community is saying, and after the promise they were going to start listening we just cant trust them on anything anymore.

Bring back Jeff, he wouldn’t stand for this <3

And the Chinese players are totally on their right to be mad when this joke of a company literally abandoned its Chinese players for every game but Diablo Inmortal (what a coincidence, I guess OW wasnt profittable enought for them to be worth making a deal there).

After all this time, it’s really sad to see the people responsible for the game still refuse to listen to player feedback and continue forward with blindfolds.

Steam’s “review bomb” was not only from chinese players, it was a message of dissatisfaction by a big portion of the player base for how you are mishandling this game.

You have a diamond in your hands, yet every decision made degrades the player experience.
Baffling but, It really feels like you are trying your best for the game to fail!

Illari is pretty much overpowered though so u released the hero without any balance like u did with LowskillMattra and LowskillSigma GAME is complete trash and I hope it dies.

I like pointing out Toronto’s difficulty as if the slicers getting in the boat bug isn’t half the reason people don’t get past the first part of the mission on legendary in the first place

Also nerf Orisa

This is the most tone deaf post Aaron has ever written
It wasnt review bombed Aaron, if you take 5 minutes to read you would have noticed that most of complainst are perfectly reasonable

Balane is still wack

Tank experience has gone down the drain in this rock, paper, scissors game, whoever came up with the idea of making the game 5v5 should be fired.

they’re trying to gaslight people. remember when they said “paid heroes are ok because counters aren’t a thing anymore” when tank switching was a core part of the metagame?
it’s a desperate fake it till you make it
