hey everyone, I just wanted to make this post to get a lot of in depth information about what the difference between competitive ranks. I’ve looked multiple places and they all say different things, the most common is “just keep playing the game” but this is completely useless.
Thanks for anyone who can help.
the main difference between ranks is your skill level and game sense. Simple as that.

Started at 2200 SR, dropped to 1300 SR and sit currently around 3000-3200 SR atm.
The thing I found particular easy to exploit at below 2000 SR even when I was new was how terrible the DPS was, I’d just play Pharah and destroy the enemy team without much effort because they simply couldn’t kill me (I originally dropped that low because I persisted in being an Ana main, worked out it wasn’t doing great). The support at this rank are often too damage orientated as well.
The biggest thing Gold players did wrong was never group up, play together or stick together, frequently over extending, being spread wayy to far apart and teamwork was woeful. Took me a while to get out of Gold but mainly because I needed to learn to play better in a team. A while back when I made an alt account so I could play with my silver friends, I could easily carry my team with Sombra (the health pack camping Sombra before her buff) because it was easy to isolate the support and kill them without resistance. Because I would communicate well to get my team to work together it was really easy to carry my friends out of silver.
As for Plat, this is the rank where people tend to group up without having to be asked and you actually start to get proper teamwork and tactics, however the biggest thing I found plat players did wrong is not know what hero to play in the different situations, I climbed through Plat pretty quickly in comparison to Gold.
Now in Diamond I’ve noticed a few difference to Plat, one particular being is that Zenyatta is absolutely amazing at this rank and other is that you tend to frequently get meta compositions, the biggest thing that determines victory at this rank is the amount of teamwork that occurs, unlike gold/plat where brute force could win games.
Awareness, game sense, positioning, mechanics, and such are just improved at each SR level. The primary difference between ranks is the number of mistakes you can make before being punished. However, players at lower ranks rarely even have the ability to identify the mistakes they make. I would submit a VOD to a higher SR player for review, and they’ll be able to point out what you’re doing wrong.
