Devs talk about MMR

Thats all well and good. But it doent just feel like its not working some of the time. it feels like its more often than not. An unbalanced mess where you can clearly see the skill disparities.

Once you start matching people in the specific roles as mentioned. For example matching the DPS players to DPS players tank to tank and so on. Things might start to smooth out. But right now its a mess and simply doesnt feel good for a majority of players.

This is incredibly stupid. Only your MMR is considered when creating a comp match.

This defeats the entire point of a designated rank. If you are in hold you should be facing gold enemies. If you keep steam rolling enemies in gold because you are better than them then you should climb, because that’s the ENTIRE POINT of skill divisions.

The “skill divisions” are literally cosmetic and that’s why the comp match making feels like trash. It IS trash.

If you keep losing you should fall in skill divisions. Not have your mmr adjust to give you easier matches within your skill division. You should simply fall to a lower bracket.

Your skill divisions entire point is to be the determining factor of your matches, to represent your ability. Not to be a cosmetic badge to represent how frequently you’ve grinded the comp queue.

This is exactly what people feared would happen when they announced they were hiding your rank. We knew it was to allow them to enforce this bogus nonsensical anti competitive mmr system on comp queues.

So YES, you ARE facing diamonds in silver lobbies because blizzard can’t understand that you shouldn’t be facing high level players in a low bracket.

They can’t manipulate and rig anything if it’s black and white. If it’s all hidden you have no proof they did anything wrong.

It’s their game, there is no “wrong”. They can define rank however they want.

All the crying on the forums is just the participation trophy generation mad about an algorithm giving them a harsh dose of reality.

Was my top 500 Genji friend given a dose of reality when he went from Top 500 before seasonal reset, put in diamond, and only queue’s up against GMs/other top 500 players? With diamond/plat players on his team? No, seems like you just wanna call people bad without saying it, and white knighting a system that’s seen 4-5 updates and is STILL functioning poorly.
So you’re better then him right? Since this dose of ‘reality’ seems to be that players lack the skill they think they have.

It’s insane that this isn’t already a thing. How can they possibly expect games to be even when they’re not taking roles into account. There’s so much they get wrong that just seems like common sense, that I start to question if they’ve even played their own game.

A lot of the Devs are Bronze players.

Yeah firstly i appreciate their post for clarification. It felt good to hear something from them on the matter.

But i agree with shadowdragon a few posts up.

What even is the point of the rank badge you wear if it doesnt dictate your matchmaking.

That IS the very thing people grind comp for, at least from my perspective. Besides having fun in the game of course.

Honestly, i have never played a game that made me feel so defeated and depressed most of the time. And untill reading their post i was about to uninstall asking why do i even bother.

If the changes they come up with dont make a significant difference ill probably just throw in the towel.

I’m actually throwing in the towel now. Since they officially confirmed comp is truly meaningless… I mean really, why would I play? I wanna know how good I can get. Tough ****! Because the only true indicator is my invisible mmr.

My win rate is rigged towards 50% and my skill division is cosmetic. So there is nothing to work for but a bunch of overpriced cosmetics that I don’t care about.

I feel the same way. It feels pointless even grinding the rank back as it’ll just get taken away again next season.

Also, if rank is a reflection of how long you spend playing and not your skill, then why do they use rank to determine who you can group up with?

They need to rethink this.

After 3-4 wins, suddenly I’m up against a Diamond Tank? Thanks to MMR?

My duo partner and I literally add these people as friends, just so we can view their profiles and see who we’re actually playing against.

We’re in Silver, playing against Diamonds.

How about use rank, let us rank up to meet the diamonds. Stop tossing them in our Silver games just because we’re doing well.

Idiotic system.

USE RANK.

The craziest part to me is the essentially fake ranks were shown. That’s ridiculous. The explaining of this system did nothing to help, all it did was show me that what I was thinking was correct in how this system fails to be balanced. How are roles not as evenly matched as possible already?

Is this why I ALWAYS have the weaker DPS? Because my DPS MMR on tank is high therefore to counter the fact that I rarely play a tank that’s at the same skill level I’m almost always handed the weaker DPS or support to “balance” the games MMR"?

Valorant, LoL and CSGO also have hidden MMR. This is normal for any matchmaking I think.

For sure they all do. But I feel like OW is doing it wrong lol. Like I really love this game. Am I playing it? Nope, trying to find something else to download or maybe gonna play BF 2042. Thats how bad the MM is. In ALL modes. Also nerf Hog… Like right now! No hook damage or heavy decrease and no moving while vaping.

Well lets wait and see what they will say in Part 2 of this blog. Maybe they will tell us how they will change/fix some of the issues.

I hope so. Cause they need to make massive changes ASAP. This sucks!

I mean they already told us part of the problem. New players they have no data on. That’s why its feeling its been really bad in OW2 even compared to OW1. This is something that should automatically change over time when the new players have data and when the hype of the game release goes away and we will see a lower influx of new players.

Yeah I can see the new player issue taking another few seasons to kinda not be a problem. Its just extremely annoying when so much of the problem is essentially flaws with the way the system is designed. I get what they’re going for but its simply not working and its leading to very poor match quality all around.

The fix I think would be to make your visible rank more closely resemble your MMR and to make the shifts in MMR less dramatic. As a result possibly making all games across all ranks feel smoother. I have and currently play with much higher ranked players than this account is sitting at.

My games feel similar though easier on this account obviously to games with streamers in higher ranks of play. People I play with and against now as well as back in the day on other accounts. (different IP/hardware IDs lol). That are visibly ranked 2.5k - 3.2k as tank. But this accounts at Bronze 2 right now? They feel again slightly different but not to any major degree most of the time.

But no way in hell are these bronze 2 players. Most of the time, Occasionally they will be and well, its just a slaughter where in I get 70 elims to 3 deaths.

But no for the most part im playing against high gold plat players. I dont know, its a mess lol. it needs some serious work.

Also this account VERY new. SO I will say the system has little and sort of manipulated data on it right now lol. Not hack manipulated but playstyle manipulated to see how fast stuff does things from very low ranks. which is why I can see um, no. I’m not playing bronze players usually lol. Most of these people have battlepass titles from last season and im a new account.

Plus ive been playing since s5 of OW1. I can tell someones rank by watching a kill cam. Just no, sometimes yeah but for the most part not at all close to the visible rank. You just at this rank just tell by positioning really and yeah. Im not playing bronze players. Most of the time. When I do again its an absolute slaughter.

It was never a problem in games of the past to have no “data” on their players. Because there’s always been RANK.

That’s enough. If you’re good you win, and you don’t deserve artificial hard mode games thanks to some hidden MMR.

If they turned MMR off tomorrow, I guarantee a lot of Bronze and Silver players would go on a 50 game win streak and shoot up to Plat.

Maybe the issue is for the game to understand WHY a match was lost. I mean any weak link in a team will get you a loss unless someone else on the team carries and makes up for the weak link.

So lets say you have a DPS in the team that is not performing at all. You lose the match because its like playing 4vs5. Maybe the game blames the whole team for that loss rather than the one player. So everyone looses score in the MMR listing. And next time or after a few matches players have a lower MMR than they should have and they start rolling the players they get matched against?

I really don’t know, Its way to early here. I’m just guessing. I think I wanna read Part 2 and see what they say before making any judgements.

Im Diamond 4/5 atm (highest was high plat in OW1). Playing support. But I also have lots matches where it seems like one or two players are new players in one of the teams. Making it a steamroll for one side.
