Devs respond to Lootboxes, Credits going into OW2

Via Reddit ama

Q: What will happen to lootboxes and the current currencies (credits, owl tokens, competitive points) once Overwatch 2 goes live? Will they just disappear?

J-Specs: Thanks for your question! We’ll share a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 goes live in October. To give you a quick answer now though, those existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points) will come with you into Overwatch 2. We are not transitioning loot boxes into Overwatch 2, and ahead of launch, any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all the contents directly.

now please no more “what about my morbillion credits and eight hundred lootboxes? They’re just gonna disappear? My family will starve!” threads

Morbillion credits? geez I don’t think anyone’s got THAT many credits

“Transfer over” doesn’t mean entirely useful though… Not to mention what Dev’s say at one point can easily be ignored or changed later.

That said I would expect them to transfer over but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are nearly useless and only good to buy old skins.

Probably. The Watchpoint Pack specifically gives you a NEW type of currency, “OW2 currency”

I don’t think we have confirmation that that is a new type of currency yet. I imagine it is and that it is the money you buy with money, but that’s still not confirmed right?

No confirmation but it’s called “Gear up with 2,000 Overwatch® 2 Virtual Currency” and has a different icon then the OW1 currency.

Does that mean we can buy paid stuff with those credits? Interesting, now we have another question unanswered!

That or there is some horrible conversion rate… like 1000 old coins for 1 new point. And new skins cost as much or more as they used to aka 3k+

are the credits useful now?

You know, I still haven’t watched Morbius yet. Waiting for it to be rental on Prime.

OW1 credits come with you to OW2, but our new virtual currency will be the main currency, and there will be things in OW2 that will not be purchasable with those OW1 credits.

100% confirmed.

Yes, but the normal OW1(gold)- credits are not exchanged at a ratio of 1:1.

This was already obvious. But it is heavily implied that all those credits won’t be spendable on anything in OW2. They will only be spendable on OW1 stuff. So they are effectively useless to people that have everything.

Its nice that they will transfer but the question remains: what can we do with them there? Buy old skins and gold weapons? Conversion to new currency? No one knows. But its a good thing that they dont just evaporate.

I mean… assuming you like cosmetics kinda? The real issue is Blizzard doesn’t really release anything any more. The basic loot box hasn’t been updated in like 3 or 4 years outside of new hero junk skins.

Event skins, if they are any good come out once every few months, and recent ones have been cheap pallet swaps or just down grades in general. Legendary lack unique voice lines and such.

Most the best skins are earned through owl tokens, aka not playing the game…

The points aren’t really the problem, it’s that Blizzard can’t make content for their own game. Not sure OW2 will really solve that.

I’m just shy of 500,000 OW1 credits/coins. So I really need to know the full extent of what we can expect. I’m mainly keeping an eye out for any sort of info regarding conversion(s).

Alright, makes sense

Yeah I imagine the gallery will remain the same and credits will still be used there. There may also be daily challenges that will earn you credits. As for how often things that cost credits will be added if at all, who knows?

New currency will be used for premium purchases, such as store skins and battlepasses. It will essentially be how a game like Apex works

yeah, it’s hard enough to maintain 250,000 credits let alone over 1 million yeesh

I’m guessing there will be smaller cosmetics maybe epic and bellow tier skin will be able to be purchased using “free” currency.

they finally added in a “open all button”
