Devs admit to over reacting to sym

So the did a AMA and I noticed this in there.

Question : I have to ask - what is going on with Symmetra? She was weak, then buffed, then immediately reverted, now silence. Is she getting reworked? What data shows she needed a nerf? She is super weak and hard to use on ladder (uncoordinated environment by nature) and was only played in OWCS for Mauga - shouldn’t nerfing Mauga have been enough?

Answer by Alec : Symmetra kept some of the buffs in that patch but yes we hear the feedback of where her current power level is. We may have been a bit overreactive to the Mauga compositions popping up during that timeframe (he was certainly overtuned), but we wanted to be sure of it. For right now, we are in discussions about Symmetra and especially her frontline presence. Believe that’s a piece of the kit we’d like to promote further, whether through her survivability or beam damage.

So they all but confirmed that she got nerfed because of mauga. Not because she was strong or OP, but because of mauga.

Funny how they’ve ignored her since then though and haven’t bothered to buff her at all.

Might be when her primary damage got buffed and then reverted right away.

Shocker on that one, it was pretty clear that Symm was a symptom of Mauga being meta for that event, not a cause

Lol, I remember when mauga released and in the sym main sub reddit someone posted a video of a lvl 3 sym beam under cardiac overdrive and said " watch her get nerfed". The team healing on overdrive is kind of busted.

He opens by saying Symmetra kept some of the buffs and uses evasive language like we may have overreacted. No Alec, you did overreact. You nerfed Symmetra a week after her buff exclusively because she saw pro play. She’s struggled on ladder for months and you have done nothing to change this.

Whatever buff eventually comes Symmetra’s way will also prove insufficient and immediately be reverted if Symmetra dips her toes into esports. Always has been, always will be.

They overreacted to sym being playable for a week, but tracer gets to completely dominate the game and they sleeping.

I’m so tired of Tracer. She is legitimately the sole reason my playtime is dropping as hard as it is :melting_face:

To every forum sym mains out there that spam threads every day I recommend you go watch spilo’s stream vod regarding this exact question on this exact AMA. It’s what I was saying as well but this forum is full of bronze-master peaking sym mains that dont play the game and only post here. Or worse, they play the game but never improve because they dont know how.

Tracer is easier to play than Symmetra at this point. Way easier. And it is not even close. I am afraid to play her and I used to believe Symmetra mains were tripping and that she was free value. Times have changed and I have no idea why she has been allowed to be in this state for so long. And no, Mauga is not the reason. He has not been meta for months. And he was never meta with Symmetra.

That does not make sense how was it Sym? There were other heroes that did more damage than her. What made her so special that the devs targeted her.

Not trying to be rude especially since I dont know that CC stance but, why should i value his opinion?

Like i dont need a CC to tell me X hero is good or bad, is fine or broken.

I will make my own opinions based on personal experience and if aviable data.

When it comes to sym i am heavily biased, she is my most played hero, and i have been with her since Sym 1.0.

I understand im not a peak GM god gamer, But that doesnt mean I cant form my own opinion from my experience playing the character.

Sym is playable, I fully understand that, but when you go from playing sym, struggling and fighting tooth and nail to pull out a win, only to then play a different hero and with half the effort needed to play sym, get the same results. It becomes really unfun.

And then when you actually look the balance changes and their reasoning, it only ephasizes how much the devs trash on sym.

Like around ~s7 when sym and torb got their power shifts. Sym lost 40 DPS from turrets for 10 extra damage on orbs. It was passable because sym could 2 tap people, as such since sym was playing farther back and 2 taping the devs next patch removed 25 health from her.

Only for S9 to come walking in makeing a mess of everything.

The global health increased made it so Sym could no longer 2 tap, meaning she was basicaly back to before the ~S7 change but with 25 less health and 40 less DPS on her turrets.

But the S9 changes didnt stop there, because of the hitboxes change everyone was landing more shots the before, but beams did not benefit from this change.

Then finally we get a buff with no nerfs on sym, only to 1 week later get nerfed becuase of some progames the devs over reacted to.

Like we had situations were heroes where OP for MONTHS and the devs didnt do a emergency patch. But Sym who was not dominating or OP outside proplay got immediately nerfed.

And that is just OW2, I could continue and go back to OW1 and the Sym 3.0 changes they did.

But when you experience all that plus more, i dare say I can form a opinion on the hero without the help of a CC telling me to.

I remember when they nerfed beams & damage but then they go back and buff Symmetra & Zarya beams THEN need Sym

I agree with this. I would never blindly listen and agree with someone just because they are a content creator. I’m still curious about their thoughts as they may make a point I hadn’t considered before. Doubt my mind will be changed about sym specifically, but you never know lol

Talk about disheartening. It sounds like there’s zero intent to rework her currently, just to keep repeating the same stupid number buffing and nerfing that’ll never actually address her core problems.
