Dev blog on the monetization of the game

I’d like to know why the surplus of Overwatch Coins has led to a +$50 hammer flip animation that was promised as an Overwatch 2 feature? I’d like to know why the last two collaborations have had mythic skins that immediately follow collaborations and double dip on those characters monetization? I’d like to know why playable content “Up to Blizzard standards and quality” is seemingly impossible for the team to create and offer for money? If this is what I have to buy in order for the game to keep going, my response is do better please. Offer me something worthwhile to me that isn’t an overpriced hammer with proofs of concept stapled to it.
You could sell universal killing blow animations. You could sell weapon variants. You cannot tell me you are giving me weapon inspects and then hold your hand out. You cannot sell me a $40 hammer that does not function until I put $25 more dollars into it. Can you sell me game updates? Can you sell me content please? Selling me cosmetics for $65 is not what I’m looking for as a player, especially when the price is a different AAA game.

These games rely on kids to steal their parent’s credit card and buy stuff, or those that live under a rock (or basement). So they know that anyone that has no inherit value of money will buy these things.

For us normal people that work jobs, and have budgets there is no way we can buy this stuff. 50 dollars for some animated video game costume or weapon that someone holds… vs 50 dollars for gas and food for the week, plus extra put back to pay on college tuition.

If it was tuned for the general population crowd. It would be charging 1-3 dollars per skin and sell dynamic bundles of skins for 25 for a pack of 30 or 35 skins. But it isn’t.

Won’t matter, whales are where the money’s at.

The monetisation is fine because you don’t have to buy any of it. The pricing is in line with every AAA game so all crying does is make people laugh at you.

Its like going into a Walmart and crying their bread costs too much, when every shop prices their bread at that price. The only one who looks stupid is you. Is bread too expensive? Perhaps? But you throwing a tantrum in a Walmart aisle wont change the prices of bread across the country

The fact you get the entire game for free
Every hero for free
Every map for free
Every mode for free

That is the important thing. Some skins that you dont have to buy that cost more money than you are willing to spend. Who actually cares?

You realise you are literally begging blizzard to make things cheaper so you can give them your money…… you are literally begging them to let you spend money.

Who is the desperate ones in all this?

The people who just buy skins or dont and are happy with that, or the ones that cry for them to be cheaper so they can give blizzard their money….

We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas!

Eh, I am not that desperate to give them money. I do not mind buying a skin that I enjoy, just not for $19. It ain’t my scene.

I did buy Bullet for my Valentine Reaper and Optimus Primehardt for $5 a piece. That’s reasonable, to me. If they have another skin that catches my eye and I only need to spend $5, I would probably do it.

That being said, I do not mind if they ever come out with another skin I care about. Preferably on Junes. Just because I have buyer’s remorse for the Reaper skin I never use anymore because I cannot stomach him in the current state of the game. He SUCKS.

This was the selling point the first overwatch. After playing a lot of fps’s that charged for map packs etc… I paid for this already. Every mode for free is just false on your end. I have to buy the “pve mode”. I am literally begging them to deliver a product that the money and value are worth it for me. Nothing in this world is free and I am willing/want to support the developers of the game I like. Cosmetics aren’t for me and the Rein mythic hammer is a great example of why. It isn’t gameplay. but it is more expensive than Overwatch 1 was. The entire game was $40. This hammer is not an entire game. It doesn’t even fully function in the game for $40. It’s crap value.

I whale out sometimes and get a 40 buck pack but do people seriously spend 80 bucks on garbage like this? that’s insane. EIGHTY bucks for a weapon skin

You want to buy gameplay….

That is literally the opposite of what most people want lol

We locked heroes behind paywalls and people hated it. Paying for gameplay is something people dont want

So it looks like you will continue to be disappointed because you are looking for something most people actively hate

What do you actually want them to release to spend money on?!?

You can totally buy it, but its up to you to make tradeoffs.

I picked up the BP this season despite having no interest in picking up anything for Ashe. What this has granted me is a surplus of 90 prisms for the BP cost to put towards whatever I want in future.

It could be this mystic for Reinhardt for example. It could be another past seasonal skin. It might even be a future seasonal skin I can unlock right away. The system is there to game for one’s trade offs.

I think its ridiculous to spent $10 on food for a single meal in a day compared to a digital good that I can use for arguably weeks, months, or years.

Nah no one is genuinely spending $80 on this. Its just people being hyperbolic for scaremongering purposes.

Most people just did as Blizzard designed and didnt get the ashe skin cus they didnt want it and instead saved their prisms and are getting the rein skin instead.

The only people wailing are the people who spent all their prisms on an ashe skin they likely dont even use, knowing the rein weapon was coming, and are now wanting the rein skin as well

They showed both skins at the start of the season for a reason. So you can make your Choice for which you wanted to get more.

The people who wanted the ashe skin,
got it.

The people who wanted the rein skin,
can now get it.

The people who wanted both are malding because they found out that they can’t get everything they want.

Thats the reality of the situation. The only people who are crying its too expensive are people who want everything. Those people are in desperate need to learn that they can’t get everything they want and this is a learning exercise for them. Just like launch ow2 was a learning exercise for them when they cried they couldnt get every legendary cus some skins were only in the store.

They cried then that they should be able to earn everything. They cry now they should be able to get everything.

Fact is, play the game right and you can get a mythic for <$10 a season. No need to ever spend $80. That’s just the devs offering an alternative option but purposely making it less attractive because they want mythics to be special

I think shaming people for wanting things to be cheaper is just as ridiculous as someone throwing a tantrum because they don’t want to pay said price.

Not only that. I don’t get the vibe that people are “upset” at the prices. We just find them insanely overpriced and Blizzard should feel shame. Objectively speaking they really are overpriced considering these are just a bunch of pixels at the end of the day.

I, personally, find the price of most things sold in the store to be an absolute ripoff.

But then Blizz have to make their money somewhere. If people want to fork out the cost of a full game on a cosmetic item, that’s between them and their bank.

Ok and $2 for bread is overpriced considering its just some flour, water etc mixed together and literally only costs pennies to make per loaf…. Your point???

Thats how business works. You make something and charge a surplus to make profit. Welcome to the adult world of taxes and pricing i guess???

As much as you want to think they set the pricing for ow2 skins, they dont. The gaming industry sets the prices.

That is why fortnite charges the same price for skins.
That is why apex does.
That is why valorant does + even more.
The list goes on.

Battle passes cost $10 in every game. That isnt a coincidence that is the standard of the industry

Yes. That is usually why I buy games and DLC. The gameplay is good, so I want more game to play. The developer normally has to develop gameplay, so giving them money for more game makes sense. Time gating a character behind a paywall is not paying for content, it’s paying for early access. Paying for early access is not paying for DLC, it’s paying for early access. The characters being time gated behind a battle pass is a good example of a crappy value proposition. Here is something you can have for free 2months later, for $10 now. I don’t want to pay for early access to a free DLC.

I want an Overwatch that develops DLC with as much public admiration as Elden ring, FF14, even World of Warcraft. I’d like Blizzard to use their intellectual property to produce video games, not outfit collectors.

Ok and with what staff???

You are talking about studios that have 100’s of staff all working on the game. Ow2 had a few hundred devs in total across all aspects of their game. From hero design, map design, art, sound. Then that dev team was further split into 2 teams, 1 for pvp and 1 for pve.

So you are maybe comparing the work a few hundred devs worked on elden ring for 4-5 years to the work maybe 60-100 devs worked on pve gameplay for 1-2 yrs. night and day.

All of those staff which were working on pve have now been fired too !!! There is no one working on what you want because they dont have the devs for it. The devs werent given the numbers required to make pve work and now have none

Most people still see and correctly call these things overpriced. What I want to know is, why are you upset with other people for not being okay with the current prices?

Because Microsoft peeled away a good chunk of the development team, trashed the PvE story and are now looking for a return on their investment. Imagine shooting yourself in the foot and then asking for help.

What kind of point is this? People are saying something is too expensive, and they’re wrong because if it was cheaper they’d buy it? People are allowed to be outraged when something is released that is insanely expensive that includes a feature they had promised as a free release feature. Bootlicking for a company that pulls in billions of dollars a year in revenue is a weird stance.
