If you lose a game after ranking up - you go into “demotion protection”. But you still lose points, you just don’t de-rank. So if you lose another game you will derank and lose double the points, from your last and second last games combined, and that’s significant damage to the rank.
So how is it a “protection” if you still lose points regardless? Shouldn’t protection full on stop you from falling out the rank, without this whole “lose points” situation?
(yes you are supposed to play to have fun and not for ranks, I AM AWARE, but sometimes you can’t help but wonder how some systems work)

It’s a scam even if you end a season in demotion protection it will show you finished the season in the demoted rank for next season. And you will not get the better rewards for achieving a higher rank. This happened to me in one of the early seasons back when they were doing that 7 wins or 20 losses nonsense.
if you are solo only player, if you lose a rank, you will lose against account boosters every game, you will play against account boosters 120% of the time
blizzard has never addressed account boosting

I’d look up what the Devs said about it. It’s just a visual thing, and it they explained it well.
In what way is that a scam? If you were D5 and fell to P1, you’re P1. It just gives you a chance to win 1 more game before getting a P1 icon.
Theres probably some psychological principal behind it or predatory monetization but that’s another conversation. It’s not unfair or a scam though.

This season I did receive a weapon charm for a rank that was already in demotion protection, so there is this benefit at least.
Apart from that it’s just visual and the MMR is already decreased.

The fact it is called “demotion protection” when in fact you are not protected from demotion. You are only protected from demotion until the season ends. Then you get demoted even if you didn’t play any additional games.
It is poorly named and poorly executed.
If you lost, and it means you drop a division. Drop the division.
Tring to save face and protect the player is a waste of time.

They are trying to trick you into continuing to play the game even after you reach a new rank. It is all about engagement these days. Fool me once, shame on you. But at least I learned a valuable lesson from that experience. Never trust Blizzard.
I wouldn’t go that far. I think it was just trying to soften the blow.
It was well meaning, but poorly done.

demotion protection is nothing more than a badly implemented attempt to soften the blow of deranking.
it’s a game of semantics that just feels bad even though it is intended otherwise.
blizzard-
either change the system so you don’t actually lose rank points until your second loss at the derank threshold, or just derank us immediately and do away with the spoonful of sugar. we can take our medicine just fine.

Sounds like you’re being protected to me. You just don’t like the duration of it. Are you really that pressed over 1 rank tier?

Nowhere is a duration mentioned. Therefore it is a scam. Feel free to defend it all you want though.
