Define "Counter."

Ive noticed that alot of people define counter as either:

  1. Significant losing matchups(while also not giving a criteria for those losing matchups)

  2. And/or Abilities that negates other hero abilities

For example, using the second definition, one can say dat moira counters genji because genji cant deflect beams.

But wat about heroes who also cant negate damage from beams? Does moira counter them as well?

I think in it’s most basic form a counter is when you have a hero interaction where it’s easier for one to get value over the other.

That would be one however

Moira goes well vs DVA as dva cannot DM moira
but, Dva can DM moira orbs, so there is a tradeoff.

However, Moira does fair well vs Genji to an extent in an event your rest of the team doesn’t have anything to check the genji.

Similarly, there are certain characters that fair well vs other characters.

Ana on Hog
Kiriko on Ana

etc etc etc.

It’s more practical rather than theoretical. Also, skill floor rather than ceiling plays an important role imo.

For exmaple, many projectile heroes have higher dps than Pharah but Pharah often regarded as a counter to many projectile heroes, because the skill floor to hit flyers with projectiles is much higher than flyers hitting ground forces.

Genji also often relied upon his thin body and double jump fighting in the close quarter against aim characters. But Moira simply ignores it with her 1.4m diameter and 20m length beam.

Genji sitting there like an idiot as he flaps his sword about doing absolutely nothing, while Moira ignores his silly lil dance and succs him anyway is in no way comparable to Soldier who doesn’t have a silly lil dance for a survival tool, he will just shoot Moira in the face.

“counter” is the guy who presses tab, counts up the KDR and damage, and then flames the guy with the lowest number

There’s counter picks and counter strategies

Counter picks are literal characters whose abilities and weapons have an inherent advantage over the target

Counter strategies are just ways to play that reduce the effectiveness of the target regardless of the character you’re playing

Counter - a flat surface over a low cabinet, usually reserved for the use of whatever is normally kept inside of the cabinet.

A counter is when your hero has an answer to what another hero can do. Roadhog’s hook counters Reinhardt by displacing him, but Reinhardt counters Roadhog’s hook because he can block it out right.

I feel like too many people thinks ‘counter’ means ‘completely invalidates them and steals their social security card’ or something extreme like that.

Define counter:
Junkrat over S76

Cups go UPSIDE DOWN

I think counter is a key on the keyboard right?

Zarya vs DVA if played right. Can’t dive targets due to bubble, beam goes through DM. In an ideal scenario **

True, but I don’t really know what the devs should do about that. Or if they should do anything about that at all.

D.va has radical mobility and the option to just out position and force movements out of Zarya. If she also resisted beams in addition to being able to dodge Zarya out right and fly into Zarya’s backline, D.va would be made wrong.

They did experiment with DM reducing damage from beams but not entirely blocking it, and it felt much better

A yes the counter, torbs counter, that’s why he became an engineer, to counter the counter counter

A counter is a hero that can output more value by using less skill and resources against another hero.

They should not. The reason why Dva is allowed to have the strengths that her players love is the existence of Mei, Sym, Zarya, etc.

This is probably a good example, but it’s also a little more complex as it’s hero match depedent.

And skill depedent.

Like technically kiriko counters JQ, but you can also force or wait out TP to make your big plays. So it’s not 1to1 true.
