Define "balanced"

I see alot of complaints about balance.
Overwatch is not balanced.
Hero X is not balanced.

I play FFA and it’s obvious that some heroes are better suited for this mode than others.
People say the game is balanced for 6v6
so should each hero be balanced compared to other heroes or should each team be balanced compared to other teams.
And regarding team balance should 6dps be balanced vs 2-2-2 comp or 3-3 or whatever.

I don’t really know so am asking
How do you think balance works?
How do you think they should do balancing?

Where my main is overpowered and meta while all other heroes can’t be played for $#|7

In my opinion, balance is something where every hero is viable.

But that’s just impossible, right?

I can’t answer that. I am not a developer but I am interested in the subject of balance in overwatch.

I would like to know how you feel team composition factors in to your idea of each hero should be viable. Should it be viable to just swap out your healers for dps or something like that.
if not than what team comps should be balanced for?
Meaning 6 dps should be ignored but 2-2-2’s 3-3’s should be balanced?

eh i dont know what you are saying, maybe i should correct my comment a little.

“every hero could be viable”

there.

I’ll try to explain a little better.
IMO there are 2 types of balance.
Hero vs Hero
Team vs Team

1 Do you think both are important?
2 Is one more important than the other?
3 How does team vs team balance work?
like do you take into account every possible team composition or just balance 2 teams running 2-2-2 composition?

You just nailed it.

If the game is perfectly balanced, then there is no META, because every tactics are even worthy which - we know - is not true.

Even with every hero viable, you will always have heroes who are - even if equally efficient in terms of power - efficient on more maps or more situations, which means that the probability to get the best of the team comp is higher hence, a META, hence a game not 100% balanced.

I do think this is the core issue people spending their time crying and whining do not understand.

I have been thinking about something similar.
I wish Reinhardt had a rework that gave him an ability to reach highground. he seems really bad pick on some maps. But then again if Reinhardt could get on highground I bet that would screw the existing balance of other heroes.
You make a good point.

Balance is and should be a thing that gives heroes advantages and disadvantages

hero X has 50 dps and can selfheal like soldier, so in order to balance another dps hero he should have like 60dps but without self heal,

for healers, one has 60 hps and can fly other has 50 hps but can self heal or something like that.so if youre getting countered by people on the ground pick the Flying hero etc.

Meanwhile, we are in state where everyone is getting buffed, everyone has dps, everyone has mobility everyone has self heal, everyone has CC

and if someone doesnt have that like Ana, people want to “buff” her and give it to her.

This is not how balance works because if you have 2 identical heroes some of them will still be better because of their abilities/hitboxes/skill floor ETC.

Adding that what is the point of playing X hero if Y hero can do the same thing and FLY.

This game is already at destroyed balance state, since they started adding supp/tank heroes that out dps damage heroes or CC that basically oneshot or remove you from the game, and the community or “standard” state from Blizz as how its going since new heroes that every hero must be as good as heroes already in the game but with something Special and better than the old onse.

ded gaem.

To me rock-paper-scissors game would be a perfect example to make this game balanced.

On a hero vs hero case, x hero wins against y hero, but hero lost against z hero, but z hero lost against x hero. Here you have a “balance” between chars; every hero has a win and a loss case.

The same can be applied to team vs team, aka meta example: dive wins against tank meta, dive lost against briggite meta, X meta will win against briggite meta, and hopefully Y meta will win against Xmeta, but lost to tank meta.

Balance in OW:

  • Every hero should find his place depends on map, situation etc.
  • There shouldnt be “better or worse” team composition. Depends on map, some comps may works better than others in certain scenario, its all about strategy.
  • Every hero should be best at doing his own role, there shouldnt be “better or worse” heroes which fit exactly the same role.

In OW balance is very complicated. It all depends on scenario etc.

Balance: Anything that isn’t Mercy.
