Dear devs, is Venture autistic?

Hi!

I was always sure that Venture was canonically autistic, but it looks like you’ve never actually answered the question. Since their announcement, I’ve seen many autism memes by and for people who are actually autistic featuring Venture. So much that Venture seems to be much more of an autism icon than Symmetra who, unlike Venture, has been officially confirmed as canonically autistic. As an autistic person with autistic friends, I relate a lot to them. I also inform myself about autism and recognize a lot of autistic traits in them (hyperfixations, many difficulties with social cues and behaviors, particular humor…). I’ve also seen a Reddit post where another autistic person talks about their theory of Venture being autistic and many other autistic people agree with this and even sometimes share about being compared to them as an autistic person.

So I would like to get an official answer from developers who worked on Venture and their lore: Are they autistic?

As a nonbinary autistic person, I’d like to think they are <3

Symmetra was released in 2016, and her autism wasn’t directly addressed until 2020.

So they might have subtle references, but whether or not it’s directly addressed is a toss up

Oh wow, I didn’t know there was such a big gap between the release and the confirmation of her autism. I hope we will get an answer on this question before 2028 : (

It’s up to interpretation.
“Quirky” can be anything that’s outside of standard behavior.
You wanna call it Autism? Go ahead. Whatever makes you feel, “seen.”

I kinda have this mentality as well, since they’re so autistic coded

Problem with things like Autism is that it’s a spectrum that can show up differently between people. So by companies trying to virtual signal and bring more awareness to such conditions, it might end up doing harm. Especially if they just perpetuate the stereotype.

This is why I think it was pretty cool that they made Soldier gay. Because it doesn’t follow the stereotype of gay people being flamboyant, which not all gay people are. Other forms of media (e.g. movies) tend to do this and I bet this isn’t appreciated by all the people in LGBT community.

I have to say I kind of agree with this, but only when it perpetuates the stereotype. But if Venture gets confirmed as autistic like Symmetra, I don’t think it would do much harm since they’re much less stereotypical than other popular autistic fictional characters like the main character of The Good Doctor and the one from Atypical. And it also gives more visibility to autism spectrum, especially with how different Symmetra and Venture are, which could help making people understand autism is a spectrum and that it is really not like their stereotypes.

Telling companies not to do something because they could do it wrong isn’t the answer.

Except there are going to be people who have stereotypical aspects of autism

Same! Maybe June 18th, Autistic Pride Day? :crossed_fingers:

Yeah, she’s a good candidate for autism, imo.

I’m talking about type of Autistic stereotype like Rain Man, not everyone with Autism are completely socially inept. Society is stupid and ignorant most of the time when it comes to things they aren’t associated with. So harmful stereotypes like this can potentially do harm for Autistic community and how others see them.

Does Rain Man type of Autism exist? Sure. But not everyone with Autism behave like that. If we’re talking about other stereotypes like having special interests, then I think it’s fine to perpetuate stereotypes like that. Because it’s common and also not considered to be a negative stereotype.

If it’s a neutral or a positive stereotype that’s being perpetuated, I think it’s fine. But even positive stereotypes can be disliked by some people too, such as the Asians = good at math stereotype. Which not all Asians appreciate.

It’s mainly the over-exaggerated Autistic stereotypes that was often in the 80s/90s movies that I think were harmful.

Ah, gotcha.

Eh, to a point.
There are extremely stereotypical special interests that people like to joke about having or insisting that I must have because I am autistic.

Oh definitely, can’t argue with that, lol.

Venture autistic?! Damn, it was there the whole time! :exploding_head:

We probably wont get an official answer from the Devs for a long time.

She’s a straight up goober and I’m happy they’re in the game.

It was know much earlier than that. She showed signs in the better world comic where she corrects a lopsided photo frame (though that could be seen as a neat freak trait) and there’s a couple of overwatch 1 voice lines.

Hints are not confirmation. Venture has hints since the very start of their existence, but it doesn’t officially confirm that they’re autistic.

It’s extremely unlikely you’ll get an answer from the devs here on the forums. They don’t read the posts here, much less actually post anything. I don’t mean to be a bummer, I think it’d be nice if the devs did frequent the forums, but they just don’t (and I don’t really blame them for it, might I add) :woman_shrugging:

Yeah i know this. And it pisses me off because how is this forum even useful if they don’t read and answer? And how to send a feedback to them to make them read it if the forum doesn’t work? This is so dumb frl, I wish there was an actually really good game company that doesn’t do too much sh*t that doesn’t make any sense and shows an attitude of “I don’t care about you” to the community.

It’s because the community that Blizzard doesn’t anymore. Just like with Riot (to a lesser extent), the community of their games basically blasted everything and anything that ONE developer, director, or what have you would say on the forums. I remember people attacking Ghostcrawler and even Jeff Kaplan way back when. Not to mention that the sheer amount of toxic people who refuse to do the bare minimum (like using Venture’s pronouns), I wouldn’t want to either.
