Deadlock Gang Lore breaking?

I noticed something odd on the back of mcrees jacket with his Deadlock skin. His jacket says Deadlock Rebels est. 1976 but if overwatch takes place during the 2070s and Ashe and McRee co-founded the game wouldn’t that make them over 100 years old in the current game?

Ashe and McCree helped found the Deadlock Gang ~20 years ago. The 1976 date is taken from an older gang that Ashe and McCree used the logo of. It’s simple logic.

They are 37 and 39 years old, respectively.

You can have a lot of theories about this jacket, because only McCree wears this modified one. Not Ashe, nor the other members of the gang. The Deadlock Rebels on Route 66 don’t have the date and eyepatch neither. Just him. The logo is different for Jesse on his bandana, his jacket, and his tatoo.

  • Did he customised his own?
  • Did this original logo indeed belonged to an old gang?
  • Did one of his ansestors belonged to this previous Deadlock gang? (grandfather, grandmother, etc.) And therefore he didn’t want the logo to change?
  • The skull has an eye patch… Is it a simple reference to “Deadeye”… Is deadeye only the name of his ultimate or does it have another meaning?

(Yeah, I’d love some explanation of why the different Jacket only for McCree ^^)

My personal view is that it’s a minor retcon. Which is fine. And you can come with some explanation if you really want to, like “they took the name from an older gang” or “their ancestors were founders” or smth.

You sure about this retcon? I only saw the different logo on Jesse. Route 66 didn’t have the same logo as him for the begining, or did it?

Anyway, retcon of not, I’m pretty sure there’s a cool story behind it and I’d love to hear/read/watch it

I don’t think we have an official statement about this inconsistency, so it’s up in the air.

The reason why I think it’s a retcon is The fact that the devs low-key admitted that Ashe wasn’t planned at all and was “written into” the story kinda spontaneously.

But hey, who knows, maybe Jesse was always supposed to be the founder and it’s not a retcon and a clever reference to something yet to be revealed. I dunno.

I wonder if McCree had the nickname “Deadeye” in the media, for his sharpshooter skills.

It would be believable as a retcon if they didn’t keep releasing things with the 1976 date on it. It first appeared on the tattoo McCree has in his Blackwatch skin, and when Ashe was released without the date, I thought that meant it was corrected. Then at the beginning of this year, we get Deadlock McCree - also with the 1976 date. Since it only appears with McCree and not with any other part of the gang, that leads me to believe it’s the original logo, borrowed/stolen from an older biker gang that McCree either idolized or had a family member in or something similar.

Yes, I don’t doubt that they can easily insert an explanation into canon and make a decent story out of it. My point is that originally, way before Ashe was even a hero pitch, Deadlock was a gang founded in the 70ies or whatever and Mccree was just a member. Probably.

But as Ashe was released, they changed that little detail and maybe gave Mccree a more personal connection to Deadlock.

That’s what I think happened.

That does make sense.

The explanation is simple.

Time Travel

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Tracer is more than enough temporal schenannigans!

Time travel is not only a terrible cop out, but time travel (in that sense) doesn’t exist in Overwatch.

It was good enough for The Avengers.

Overwatch has hardly enough lore to cop-out of anyway.

But they specifically tried to make minimal changes to the time line, and for something that big, I’ll let it slide.
Here, there’s nothing important enough to justify it.
