This a silly and rather trivial topic, but why are the dead faces for the new characters so bland? The original cast almost all have super silly faces when they die. Brig, Moira, and Doomfist seem to just set to default facial expression.
Beats me.
You’re generally not supposed to have time to just zoom in on their faces when they die lol.
I’m trying to figure out why are they using bones to animate the faces instead of using a flex slider like Source does, allowing for a wide range of emotions while also letting you to actually lip sync character’s voice lines.
Characters are so lifeless when they have a default face on constantly.
Probably to not have to deal with blend shapes. Regardless, you can animate pliable objects like faces and muscles with bones too. It’s weird, but I’ve seen rigs with free-floating bones before.
I studied war in college and am friends with veterans.
Long and short of it is, most civilians can’t handle what war really is, and except for a small handful of movies such as Saving Private Ryan, entities like Hollywood and the history channels greatly sanitize and whitewash what war and violent death are. War veterans almost never talk about what they went through except with each other, because most civilians think they’re lying, and the vets hide it from their families because they don’t want to mess up their wives’ and kids’ heads. That’s how bad it is.
If death in this game was realistic, they’d be exploding into chunks of blood and flesh with absolutely insane screaming and with some violations of the Geneva Convention piled on. Violent games are fun, but almost never truly realistic. That’s almost certainly a good thing.
I am guessing Blizzard didn’t want a content rating of M or higher, so they decided to sanitize OW to maximize their audience and hopefully avoid parents refusing to let their kids play.
I don’t know, the silly dead faces did give Overwatch more cartoonish feel.
All you did was spout some animation knowledge while saying nothing at all. It’s like you’re weirdly trying to show off by saying irrelevant things.
The only excuse for not working on death faces is time, and money spent on something many never notice. Which IMO, is a decent excuse.
Fair point, but I can’t imagine it taking up too much time. Kind of hoped Ashe would have a silly dead face like McCree.
To be fair, there are some really funny replays that popped up on the OW sub-reddit thanks to these details. Less things like that is sad.
“Every time I move, I cost Blizzard $100”
You asked why they would use bones instead of sliders. I theorized it’s to not have to deal with the weight of blend shapes.
A blend shape is an invisible polygonal target that a slider can move towards. So for a smile, you need a separate shape for the character’s head smiling. It’s a little cumbersome and archaic compared to other methods of facial animation, of which using bones is valid.
Screw me for having gone to school for animation and using that education to discuss a subject that interests me, and for assuming you were gonna be discussing this in good faith instead of using it as a cover to whine about Blizzard.
Ah crap, I couldn’t tell you were responding to someone. The forum software doesn’t say you’re responding to someone if your reply is directly below them. It looked like you were talking into the air without context. Sorry about that.
S’all right! No worries!
