I want to start off by saying that D.Va’s Shooting Star is a fantastic animated short.
It’s beautifully animated, gave us a bit more insight into D.Va’s character,
And I’m especially loving the additions of Dae-Hyun and the Meka Squad! I want to applaud the team for giving D.Va the animated short love a lot of us were yearning for, you guys are awesome!
However, the short has brought up a few more questions I personally have, and they’re too lengthy and wordy to ask on twitter. And do please bear with me, this is my very first post on the Forums.
So with all that said, Here are my questions:
1. Timeline
To start off simple, when exactly does the short take place? Is it around when Winston Issued the recall or sometime after Doomfist escaped from prison?
2. Combat Streaming & Seeing her mission as a game
It’s stated in D.Va’s bio that she streams her combat operations for her fans to see, and she sees her mission as a game. But this short really calls those details into question, as we’ve seen how hazardous & potentially fatal the missions could get, and streaming the live footage of a mission that could have one of the squad members die would be a public media disaster, so does she still stream her fights? Moving on what about D.Va seeing her mission as a game, is that still a thing as well? Because again as I said, her and her squad mates could die so I don’t think they really see it that way.
3. D.Va’s Personality.
Ok, this is something that I’ve been wondering a lot about after watching Shooting Star. And I’m wondering if the D.Va we’ve known since the release of Overwatch, the “gaming lingo quoting, NERF THIS!” D.Va is a fabricated act put on by her & the media and is not who she really is? OR is that part of her in the game we’ve known of since launch indeed a part of her character but it’s only the part of her the public and the whole world in the game’s story knows about, and the side of her we saw in Shooting Star, is the side only a few such as Dae-Hyun and her squad knows of?
I hope this question makes sense and isn’t coming off as confusing. I’m trying hard to be as articulate for this question as possible.
4. D.Va’s Dad/Family
Finally, my last question is will we get to see anything about D.Va’s Dad and maybe her family as a whole?
Now I will admit, as much as I do love Shooting Star, I am saddened we didn’t get to see anything on her Dad or family. But that doesn’t by any means ruin the short in any way at all for me, it absolutely does not at all!
I understand that a lot of effort and energy goes into making these shorts, especially within a limited time. And I know now that there’s more to come in the future, so of course, we must be patient.
But man, I can’t help but feel there’s a perfect opportunity waiting for some kind of backstory with her family, especially her dad who I presume she and him are close.
And actually, if I may be so bold to suggest, I have this idea for them that I think would be a great backstory for D.Va as well as a heartfelt moment between her and her dad.
Picture this Scenario: Her dad is either stressed from work or has been laid off or fired, he returns home and he needs something to take his mind of it, and that thing is his favourite video game: Starcraft, and while he’s playing it, a 4 or 5 years old Hana comes to see him after never seeing him much from working a lot, and because of that, he lets Hana watch him play the game, and this could be her first encounter with a Video Game, which could be the catalyst that begins her career as a Pro Gamer, and can be a nice heartwarming moment between her and her dad.
And that’s my bold suggestion, now granted this is partly based my own earliest memories of video games, which was watching my own dad Play both Starcraft & Diablo. And I don’t expect this idea to ever become a reality and I’m fully aware of that, but I really thought I’d share anyway because I love this game, and D.Va’s one of my favourite characters, and I think it’s not a bad idea.
And that’s the end of this long bunch of questions in addition to my little lore suggestion. I hope I was articulative and eloquent enough for anyone in the dev team to understand and possibly answer my questions for me & anyone else who may be pondering these as well.
