Judging by how long it took us to get something as simple and obvious as an opacity slider for objective waypoints and death icons, we won’t see it added until 2024 if ever.
I’m curious what sort of things you would customise?
I can’t think of anything I’d change about the HUD off the top of my head but I’d like to be able to adjust the volume of the sound signalling an ability is off cool down. For my main heroes it’s fine, you do it more by feel than anything. I think making it louder when I’m learning new heroes could be useful. But if it was loud all them time it would bug me.
the HUD is what displays your health bars, CD abilities and kill feed, correct?
I want to be able to resize those thing and move them anywhere on the screen that I want to.
Yes, that’s the HUD.
Maybe I’m too complacent but I really wouldn’t change anything. The original kill feed wasn’t great but the current one is fine. The only thing I’ve ever wanted to change I already can - the crosshair / reticule.
I’d make the health bar and cd abilities really small and place them towards the center. I can’t see them, they are too far away from the center of my screen.
I don’t care about the kill feed either, but I would like 12 little dots. 6 blue and 6 red. And just little X’s over them if they’re dead. I’d like to be able to resize this and move it around also.
I can see why this is desirable. I couldn’t do it, though. I am stuck in my ways. If I started moving things around, I’d wonder why the kill feed was always empty.
How big is your monitor??? Or how close are you sitting to it? Mines big enough (not anything crazy, just 27") and I can see everything fine.
Other than occasionally missing that our Widow just took out someone far away from where I am I don’t really miss any kills. I mean, most of them happen right in front of you and it shows in the kill feed (which as I mentioned I can see just fine). If I do need to check who’s alive/dead I just press tab.
Look at BF4 for a good example. You can move the HUD closer to the insides of your screen, change the opacity and colors of certain things, etc.
It’s not hugely customizable, but it’s enough that it’s desirable.
27" I even had trouble on my 24". I’m sitting 2 feet away. Maybe I have poor peripheral perception. OWL people seem to play on very small monitors.
I hear ya, but I still want my feature. I’d place it 2 inches above my reticle, 50% opacity and turn off the kill feed.
yes this, this is basically all I want.
Move/resize/opacity… that’s it.
but I want to do each element separate. health, abilities, kill feed.
oh and one more thing: I’d like to have three little dots that show when I’m being healed, boosted, low on health. Actually know when the edge of your screen tells you that? I’d like to have little tiny icons that light up instead. Place those close to the center.
I figure it’s the FOV (IRL, not in game) that matters. My monitor is about 60 cm away, so similar to you. I notice on OWL that they tend to sit really close but use small monitors (24" if I remember correctly, so the same as you). I reckon the FOV (angle subtended from eye to the edges of the monitor, in this situation) would be similar in OWL to what I have. Thus the relative or ‘apparent’ size would be similar in both cases. Yours would be much smaller. I.e. OWL players have the same size monitor but sit much closer than you do. So if they can see the relevant info in their super fast paced fights then us mortals should be fine.
That said, it can’t be a very difficult thing to implement a customisable HUD. So whatever that big thing that’s supposedly coming this year which Jeff talked about is better be worth not adding small things like this.
I see everything quite well as it is, but I still would like the option to move and simplify things. I used a custom HUD that moved health and ammo towards the middle of the screen in TF2, and that was amazing. Going back to the default there is painful.
for something competitive the ui is atrocious
The simplest thing they can do, with the most bang for your buck is: Allow resizing, opacity and X,Y movement of all HUD elements. health bar, Ult meter, abilities and ammo, kill feed, voice coms, score and timer.
Allow me to move, resize and opacitize these things and we good
But it might make the game look ugly!
What about the viewing experience?!
Jeff said he wanted us to be in control of our playing experience.
I wish there was an option to make Overwatch look like Starfox 64. That way people on crumby computer could play too.
Well obviously he doesn’t actually want that… This game has been out since 2016 and we STILL can’t change our HUD or viewmodels. The devs care way too much about aesthetics.
what you’re saying doesn’t even make sense because you’d be able to set it to default and on OWL they’d just show the default anyway.
I wish they’d stop making skins and lore and beef up comp mode fcol
I think I’m doing my usual thing where I never get my point across properly… I’m pretty sure we have the same opinion. Blizzard cares too much about useless things like aesthetics and lore, and not enough about the competitive experience on our end.
