I have heard some people in the game say shadow step is absolutely broken and it shouldn’t be in the game.
Others say it is absolute garbage. What do you think?
Me personally, I climbed 300 SR with that ability. I keep using it to get directly behind everyone and ult, and to set up in position and wait for them to push then take out a healer then wraith out.
It is so powerful because if you’re on high ground and you see reaper about to teleport in front of you, you HAVE to get out or you’re dead in 2 shots (thanks to the buff).
In a teamfight, it’s like an anti-hack; broken against teams poor coordination but useless against teams with it. It’s also mediocre because it’s one of the few abilities you can’t use during a fight without huge risk, but this aspect isn’t as bad as it used to be.
In a 1v1 scenario it’s pretty frustrating because you can’t really punish him for aggro teleports anymore since he’s able to act again so fast (idk if there even is a period where he’s there but can be hit, maybe I just don’t have the framerate to see it); a team can just pile on him but as an individual there are only a few heroes who can do anything about him at this point. Instead of leaving the ‘Leaving’ stage of tele as is and turning the arriving side instant, they should have cut the same amount of time off of both.
All in all it’s just okay. Kinda clunky looking and I would have preferred a rework.
As someone who mained Reaper in early seasons, I have always been of the opinion that Shadow Step was perfectly fine. It never needed changed. People are just really bad and didn’t understand how it was supposed to be used. The devs knew this, and told us repeatedly they didn’t want to do this, but people continued to complain.
I wish they never buffed it and instead helped his actual kit. They basically buffed it in a way that did not make him more viable, just more annoying.
Good use of shadowstep was always a hallmark of good Reaper play. Then the devs made it easier, less clunky, and semi-usable in combat. All it needed was the edge fixes it got with the teleporter changes. It’s sort of inconsequential tbh because Reaper will be a beast either way, but he’s just even more dangerous when he doesn’t need to be.
It was without a doubt the worst ability in the game until they revorked it (can’t remember when that was, but it was the patch that allowed you to shadowstep while moving)
Before: Couldn’t move while casting it, had a loud sound effect and visual queue to where you are gonna pop out, which meant death for Reaper since he wasn’t invulnerable for a second like he is after the rework.
