As I work through the next 9 weeks to bring the community as much selfmade fan content as possible, I’m starting to realize what I’m putting myself through. I wanna get a lot in. I just posted a mock interview with Winton Overwat and that took me almost an hour alone. And I hope to get a couple of these posts in a day! Hoo boy!
One thing I wanna do during this season to accompany the goofy as interviews is to give each and every hero a complete talent tree. Something of which we are unfortunately NOT getting. :look_of_judgement: To prepare myself for this endeavor, I went back to the 2021 presentation, which is a very good video and a very nice reminder of what we missed out on. I recommend you watch it. O_O
Anyways, Reinhardt’s talent tree had a whopping 52 extra talents. Mercy’s had 48. Soldier had 53. Thassalot. I gotta do like 40-50 per hero to satisfy myself. Eesh.
So I’m like… how do I go about this? I could just like… try and think of 50 talents off the top of my head. No. How do I organize this?
So, looking at Rein’s tree, he’s got three different trees. Juggernaut, Guardian and Crusader. Two of them are obvious. Juggernaut makes him more tanky and Guardian probably focuses on shield usage. Crusader’s an interesting one, though. What’s that all about? Maybe it involves a crazy rush playstyle, or takes advantage of fire strike of all things, or maybe he become the master of the elements and smashes everything that stands in his way. Things that aren’t obvious or aren’t encouraged by the meta.
I like that style. 2 trees that focus on popular playstyles, and one that Blizzard decides to invent for the heck of it. I got an idea for Tracer where one tree focuses on diving on the opponent and dealing damage, another where her focus is increasing her ability to use the map and flank, and another one that makes her time lord and gives her a new ultimate. Ain’t that cool? We could’ve gotten this!
So here’s how I’m gonna imagine this.
- Each hero will have 3 different talent trees reflecting 3 different playstyles.
- 2 trees will be popular ways to play the hero in PvP.
- 1 tree gives a new way to play the hero and takes advantage of the character as much as possible.
- Each tree will have AT LEAST 12 talents. They could be like “that cool bowling move” for Mei, or they could increase a hero’s damage by 5%. Gonna try and use the former as much as possible.
- Better, or more fun talents will likely be further down the line.
- The player must select a specific skill tree they want to focus on. This will give them an exclusive perk as well as additional points to use for that skill tree specifically.
- You can have talents from every tree simultaneously, of course.
- You upgrade and add talents by using skill points which you accumulate by leveling up your hero in hero missions or the campaign.
- Leveling up your hero requires you to play as or play with the hero.
- Let’s say the max level is 40. You may not be able to equip every talent.
- Talents require certain other talents to be unlocked before you can use them.
- Some talents may overwrite others, (for example, you might have to choose between a tiny, but fast knife or a giant knife for Junker Queen) but chances are, they can be combined for some wacky shenanigans. (for example, giving Torb a bunch of ways to modify his turret)
- You can disable talents without refunding skill points.
Did I miss anything?
Anyways, look forward to a skill tree for Winston tomorrow among other things.
