Counters make the game boring

Counters. Constantly having to switch because another hero just straight up makes my hero unplayable.
That is boring game design.
Oh there’s a monkey? Go reaper… Oh you have an Rein, oh gotta go basion or Hanzo or Symm… Like it’s so boring.

Maybe I don’t want to play those heros? Oh well you lose the game then. Sorry. Boring.

Are you sure you know what game you’re playing

Are you sure YOU know? OW2 is not supposed to be held hostage by countering. Devs said this would change. It has changed for WORSE. The tank role has never been as hard countered as it is now imo.

I lucked out cause i went from being a dva onetrick to dva/junkerqueen twotrick and jq is great into beams and melee.

I mean it’s inevitable. Snipers beat shotguns from range. Up close? Switch it around but the sniper still has that one shot potential. It’s just not designed for it even tho I find no problem with it. HARD counters are a different story.

Yeah, hard counters. They need to get rid of those. Soft counters should always be a thing.

Devs said something they knew to be false to deflect from people telling them that locking heroes in a batterpass was a bad idea.

No one complaining about counters is EVER discussing soft counters.

That is a soft counter. If you learn how to play around it, you can kill the sniper by closing distance fast but out of their line of sight. Up close shotgun wins against sniper.

Hard countering is the issue.

You can’t get rid of counters (hard or soft) without homogenizing the cast. Take Junkrat and Pharah for example. There is no way you’re going to meaningfully soften that counter relationship without severely gutting, if not outright removing, Pharah’s ability to fly.

So unless you want to play the equivalent of Counterstrike, you’re going to get counters regardless of whether you want them or not.

Ummm I don’t wanna be that guy, but I said the exact same thing you said. In the end I said HARD counters are a different issue but I think op is just referring to counters in general.

A little homogenization is inevitable in the cat and mouse game of war. Which is why AA tanks and antitank tanks are now just the same main tank, sometimes aa sometimes antitank sometimes antipersonnel.

I would really like to know what hard counters they’re discussing then, because I personally haven’t seen anyone complain about hard counters here since forever

Yes, certain heroes should be uncounterable.

Except Overwatch isn’t a “game of war”, it’s a game of fun. It’s like the exact opposite end goal. You want a heterogeneous cast because the diversity of play styles keeps it fresh. Contrast that to an actual military where homogenization helps with standardization and keeps manufacturing costs down.

Lol you actually believed the devs when they said that? OW at its core involves countering and nothing will ever change that. Blizzards already shown this to be the case time and time again for just OW2. :joy:

The only reason they said there wouldn’t be counters was to soften the backlash of locking heroes behind the battlepass. People need to stop spreading the “no more counters” as gospel. This is what happens when you lose a tank. 5v5 was a failure

Overwatch = counter heroes. The whole game revolves around that since the very beginning and I’m glad it is like that.

What happens when you try to balance around counters can be seen in retail WoW - every class can do everything, they all lost their identity over the years. It’s a boring mess.

It’s not fun to me when you can’t even play the heroes you want unless you want to lose the game.

Also to clarify… Maybe well, it is the counters, it’s the constant switching… Game starts, let’s say for example, Enemy team has Orisa, you aren’t going to sit there with your Sigma all game… You need to switch after death, then You switch to I dunno Hog, then They switch to Dva or back to Orisa it becomes SO BORING that if you do not counter you lose.

Any game where you have a diverse set of characters with different abilities are going to have soft-counters and there isn’t a way to balance away soft-counters unless you remove the uniqueness of every character and make them all jack-of-all-trades. There will always be heroes that are better at long range or short range. Obviously Winston is in your face so you want to play a short-range hero.

I think it is also important to note that even though Reaper soft-counters Winston, in the last OWL season almost every team still ran Winston even though every team also ran Reaper and rarely swapped him out and when they did they usually lost.

Then play a different game. The whole point of overwatch is counterpicking

One of the skills of overwatch and why people liked it isn’t just in having a skill in a single character. Infact, learning and understanding the whole cast really helps you get better at the game and what makes it fun.
Sure, it’s unfun at first when you have one person you like to play but learning multiple is what makes it a fun game. Playing a character and than switching to the appropriate situation/map/enemy team is fun.

Exception is tank after the 5v5 changes.

Yeah. Overwatch 2. Which is extremely controlled by counterpicking and has little to no actual player agency.
