Constant Fps drops

I constantly experience frame drops to 125-130 regardless of the settings.

my specs:
Rx 580 8gb
r5 3600
16gb ram 2333mhz
asus b450 motherboad

the game is on ssd

My video card SHOULD consistently give more than 150 frames. But, according to my observations, due to some effects of ultimates or even randomly, my fps drops and input lag appears.(p.s. I tested the effects of ultimates on custom polygons and they do not affect performance in any way.)

I turned all the graphic settings to the minimum and even reducing the resolution by 50% does not affect these drops, they still happen. I set the battlenet mode to close when entering the game, disabled hardware acceleration. I set the game to high priority and closed all programs. I turned off the backlight in games for my mouse. I closed all possible applications that could cause a conflict. I have the latest drivers for the video card.
I just now lowered all the settings to the lowest possible minimum, resolution to 75% and set the fps lock to 140 frames and the fps still drops to 125-130 frames.

This ONLY happens in overwatch.
without frame rate limitation the game can give me from 170 to 240 fps, until a random event, I don’t know what, which reduces my frames to 125-130 for a certain period of time.

It may seem funny, but it seems to me that the game deliberately reduces my fps so that I lose matches. Because there are no FPS drops in easy matches and they appear when I have to make an effort to win.

Maybe you have some advice that can help me, besides the two logical ones: stop playing the buggy game or change the computer. Thanks.

Hi, volunteer here. Optimizing for high fps isn’t considered a technical support issue (like crashing or installation problems). It’s usually best to inquire about optimizations on an enthusiast site, like a subreddit or hardware forum.

However, some of these points/questions might point you in the right direction.

  • Just to verify about changing graphics settings: Make sure you’re adjusting them with the drop-down menu and they all say low next to them.
  • The CPU is 5 years old. It has about half the processing power of today’s prebuilt computers in the $1k–1.5k range and may be part of the performance issue.
  • RAM has a relatively low speed by today’s standards (about 8 years old), and is overclocked. The Overwatch client doesn’t always play well with overclocked hardware.
  • GPU also offers about half the power of modern models, like an RX 6700.

I ran your setup through a couple of FPS estimators, guessing a bit about your RAM and motherboard models (there are choices beyond the primary model number) and the results were similar from both. I also assumed a 1920x1080 resolution. If you’re running beyond that, or have multiple monitors, your fps will be even lower.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and AMD Radeon RX 580 can run Overwatch 2 game on 1920 × 1080 (FHD (1080p)) resolution with frames per second ranging from 70.1 FPS up to 124.1 FPS depending on game settings.

  • On ultra settings this configuration can achieve from 70.1 FPS up to 90.6 FPS , with average around 86.5 FPS .
  • On high settings this configuration can achieve from 81.8 FPS up to 107.9 FPS , with average around 94.9 FPS .
  • On medium settings this configuration can achieve from 98.7 FPS up to 119.1 FPS , with average around 108.9 FPS .
  • On low settings this configuration can achieve from 108.7 FPS up to 139.5 FPS , with average around 124.1 FPS .

Edit: So many things can cause dips in processing power, like temperature spikes on older hardware (paste failure), too many background resources being used, old drives slowing down, etc. There are some enthusiast forums that will review each piece and test with you.

But they are wrong. You can watch tests on YouTube with this setup on low graphic(example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PNpS9zjNoU) preset and I am ready to provide you with the data myself.
On a low graphics preset(except textures)

the game gives an average of 160 to 230 fps, not:

.

These drops to the same values do NOT depend on the graphics settings, fps drops always occur to the same value. 125-130
Such strong drops with the appearance of input lag occur ONLY in Overwatch. I also noticed that sometimes when I’m not moving in the game, my fps drops, but as soon as I turn the mouse or press a button, the fps comes back.

This does not cancel its relevance. We are not talking about bf2042 on ultra settings, but about overwatch.

I wasn’t so sure that there was something wrong with the game, if it weren’t for the complaints of other people with more powerful hardware about FPS drops. Random frame drops also happen to my friend who has the 3060 rtx video card.
I’m pretty sure my hardware is good enough to provide at least stable 140-150, but the game keeps giving me random frame drops, regardless of what’s happening on the screen.

The problem may be in the memory frequency, but again, problems are observed only in Overwatch, I also play Valorant(200fps), bf 2042(60fps lock), cs2(144), the legends(60). And even if I can’t afford high fps (around 100+), the frames are stable and there are no fps drops. And the games listed are more hardware dependent, so I’m sure the problem is not in my hardware.

Then I recommend taking my advice from the original reply and working with people in an enthusiast forum.

I was just providing some ideas about the situation, like I said. There’s no need to “prove your case” to me about any of the individual aspects of the setup, because I’m a volunteer and do not work for Blizzard. That said, the staff that used to post in this forum are no longer here.

Ok. I didn’t mean to be rude.
If I don’t find a way to solve the problem, I’ll try to change the RAM, it works at 2333 MHz, because one of them limits the higher frequency of the other.

I used to run a R5 3600 and a GTX 1070 8gb at 1080p. I was pegged at around 230-270fps on low settings at 100% render scale.

Your CPU is fine, your gpu is okay as well. Your ram is an issue.

3200Mhz would be the ideal sweet spot for your cpu and should hugely improve fps stability. I have had issue with corsair ram in past and AMD cpu’s. G.skill ram has been flawless.

Outside of hardware, there is a lot to consider…

What other programs are running in the background?

Wallpaper engine? Razer Synapse (this is a common fps issue culprit)? Has windows got a broken update that keep trying to reinstall in the back ground?

Also please look up Jayz2cents guide on how to use DDU and reinstall your gpu drivers from scratch, this can often make a huge difference.

I thought about that too. Yes it is enabled, but I have disabled the synced gaming lighting. I’ll try to close the app completely and check.
No more background apps running, I also had to disable the software for my headphones and msi afterburner.

One of my RAM sticks is Corsair…
This means that in addition to the memory frequency, there are probably other problems with it.

Thanks. I will try it.

i am running on the same specs as you.

i did not get any frame drops

R5 3600
RX580 8GB
16GB (2X8GB) 3600Mhz
B550 MB

Games installed on a cheap lexar ssd

i can run on ultra, mid, high without any frame drops with fps around 100-200

i play on low on everything with FSR off (default), to reduce the load and heat of my gpu

I Agree could be a ram issue.

can u enable XMP on ur MB

The RAM sticks have different frequencies, so the higher frequency memory adjusts to the lower frequency stick.
Yes, the motherboard allows me to enable XMP, but I don’t know much about hardware overclocking, etc.
p.s. I enabled xmp profile, let’s see how the computer behaves…

But anyway. I completely uninstalled the Razer app and it seems the problem is gone. At least in 10 matches I didn’t feel any frame drops or input lag. But there is a chance that the problem has not gone away.

p.s. the problem still exists.
The funniest thing is that the AMD software shows lower and lower fps, with decreasing frames in the fps lock. That is, as if the game always gives out fps less than the values I need. I am sure that this is some kind of bug with the software on this video card or something else.
If I set lock 150, AMD says I have 139 fps. If I set lock 140, AMD says I have 125 fps. If I set 125 fps, it shows 109 in the app.
