Hi everyone,
I wanted to open a discussion about something that’s been bothering me for a while: button limitations on console — especially as Overwatch 2 (and now Stadium Mode) gets more complex with commands, pings, consumables, and special abilities.
Right now, the game maps one command to one button, which creates obvious limitations. But many modern games solve this with a very simple method: combining buttons to unlock more commands. For example:
- L1 + R1
- L1 + △
- L1 + R2
In this case, L1 becomes more than just one function — it becomes a modifier button, or a “first input,” opening up whole new layers of control.
Another overlooked option is the touchpad on PlayStation 4 and 5 controllers. It doesn’t just work as a single button — it can also detect swipes (left, right, up, down), essentially offering four additional gesture-based commands.
My personal example:
Due to some remapping and adaptations, I had to make tough compromises with my layout:
- I no longer have access to voice lines or sprays.
- My crouch button is now mapped to
, because I gave
to the “switch shoulder” command in Stadium Mode — which I found myself using more often.
But the result is that crouching now feels clunky, and I’m missing key functions. With more modifier support, this could easily be avoided.
Looking ahead:
Stadium Mode is supposed to eventually include consumable items, as I read somewhere — and when that happens, we’ll need more hotkey options than ever. This concern doesn’t only apply to Overwatch, but even to other Blizzard titles I play occasionally, like Diablo IV.
Final thought:
Please consider expanding console input support with combination buttons and touchpad gestures. It’s a simple solution with big usability payoff — and it’s already industry-standard in many games.
Would love to hear if other console players feel the same way!
